The hotel is very well located; not to far from JR station but in a very quiet street. The rooms are good sized with excellent beds. Leave the hotel turn to the left and you can walk along the stream and in the old town. But you are also very close to the shopping area where you have no trouble...

Good sized rooms, helpful staff, well located hotel. Would recommend for stays in Kyoto. Rooms well equipped with lovely large bathroom. A big hotel but with all the charm of a smaller boutique Japanese hotel.

Very friendly and helpful staff in the lobby and at reception. Seemed very keen to please. Our room was very large and the western beds soft and comfortable. The hotel is located in a quiet street within easy walking distance of the markets and main shopping area. Many convenience stores and restaurants close by. It felt safe walking in the...

There are a number of good things about the Nikko Princess: location, comfortable beds, decent breakfast and staff who can speak some English. But for a luxury hotel, the Nikko Princess is a very sad place, overdue for a total renovation. The lobby feels like 1980 and the rooms do too. Furniture is old, carpet and drapes too. The room...

This is a beautiful hotel tucked away on a quiet street, just off one of the main roads in Kyoto. Staff was very helpful and welcoming. Our room was spacious and comfortable. There is a breakfast buffet available offering both western and japanese foods. The hotel is withing an easy walk to subway and train stations as well as local...

Tucked away in suburban Kyoto, the Nikko Princess hotel is very well located; walking distance from the cycle rental (J-Cycle), the Lawson convenience store, and the high street. The rooms are a bit small, though, and the toilet's instructions are written in Japanese, though, so I had to experiment with the buttons on the toilet to figure out how they...

It was very clean and bed was comfortable.. the breackfast in the lobby was correct, which was a combination of asian and western food. Overall we had an excelent stay and if we go back Kyoto we...

The room was quite spacious, with two double beds. Very well-equipped with places to charge electronics. The bath was extraordinary, with a large separate space that had a soaking tub and shower. It was almost like having a private onsen. An in-room Japanese massage (Shiatsu) cost about the same as a spa massage would have cost in many US cities....

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
