The first thing I noticed was the difference in service as compared to our hotel in Tokyo (not nearly as good). It is close to the train/subway station and the rooms and hotel were clean. The service is not bad, just a stark difference from our (more expensive) hotel in Tokyo. It is also close to a shopping mall and...

This hotel is conviniently located close to Kyoto train station, (appr.5min walk). This means easy access to subway to get to any sights etc. Room was quite up-to-date and spacious, quiet as well. Breakfest to me was just ok, I missed having a bit more selection for fruits for example. Had problems getting free wifi to work, that's really my...

RIHGA was a really nice Hotel in Kyoto, location was close to Kyoto station (5 min walk) which is handy for departures if leaving early in the morning. However if you want to be amongst everything i would consider staying in town where everything is. The hotel itself was up market, rooms were great, bed, shower, wifi, and air con...

Stayed at this hotel with my 20yr old daughter. Took Executive Twin suite on the 10th floor. The bedroom was spacious with the most comfortable beds ever! The room came with everything we could imagine plus more! (I won't tell so as not to spoil it for you). The toiletries in the bathroom were of superior quality . Although we could...

We stayed at the Rihga Royal as many other options were already taken and based on the descriptions and reviews I thought it was a good option. Overall 3 out of 5 stars might seem a bit harsh but there were too many things that for me didn't work out to give it a better grade. The hotel (on its...

It was cherry blossom time and so we felt fortunate to find a room for 3 adults and near the train station. There is a free bus shuttle from the train station but it is small and quickly fills up. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk. The room with two double beds and a twin was very small...

This hotel is conveniently located about a ten minute walk from the Kyoto train station and shopping malls, but you do have to cross a very busy highway to get to and from the hotel. (The hotel does provide a shuttle service to the train station, but we did not utilize it). The neighborhood (busy highway, train tracks) and the...

Stayed here for 7 nights, room only, no breakfast. A bit pricey for the standard and size of room but it was clean and comfortable. The staff were efficient and friendly. Major point in its favour is location - 2 minutes by shuttle and 5 minutes on foot from Kyoto Station which is the epicentre of everything in the city. We...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
