15 min walk to train and underground stations the location was okay. staff very friendly but the room was a little dark. ground floor had a communal area which made it all a bit like a hostel especially with washing machine facitities upstairs as well. perhaps a little overpriced but then you are in a great city.

Based on reviews on this site we were expecting a much better place than we actully found. First, we were asked for money upfront-which doesn't go a long way towards making you feel "at home"...The room itself was very nice , EXCEPT - it had a weird but distinctly unpleasant odor ( we couldn't decide if it was from the...

Situated 15 mins walk from kyoto main station. Simple modern ryokan that is complete and not over priced . Staff are friendly and knowledgeably on tourist attraction. Washing machine and dryer are available with two PC to use free. Traditional tea and biscuits are provided. Breakfast are available at1000 yen. Disadvantage is the wall are a bit thin that the...

Stayed 3 nights at this Japanese Ryokan. It is located a good 10-15 min walk from the train station. We tried the local Japanese breakfast on the first morning and had a good spread. The room was small but with toilet attached, it was great. It was cleaned daily and well equipped with the Japanese dressing gowns, tea, etc. We...

This ryokan hotel is located only 10 minutes from Kyoto station and main bus stations, which made traveling so much easier. Lovely rooms, great service. The reception staff are a gem, very helpful and friendly. Mattress (futon) can be a bit thin if you're used to the thick western spring mattress, so ask for an extra one to put on...

Matsubaya ryokan was a very cosy place to stay. We were there last december. The room was nice, well heated, very clean, with a tea set we could use. Some of the night we preferred to have some bento dinners in the room rather than going to a restaurant. The staff was exceptionally friendly. The last day we put some...

This is a perfect base within ten minute stroll of the station. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. The room was japanese ryokan style and just right. You will meet lots of other travellers here at breakfast. Would return without a second thought.

I saw that people rate this not as real ryokan. I dont know what it is - a real ryokan - but I know that Matsubaya gave me a feeling of real japanese style hotel! It was clean, nice and friendly service, good breakfast (although japanese breakfast for european may be a bit of a challenge...:) ). Wi-Fi working ok...

This is more of a motel/inn 5 story building with lots and lots of tour groups staying here. - not really a Ryokan at all but does have Japanese style rooms. Overall the room was very good, and the location was great, not far from the train station. The service of all staff was geenerally extremely good. We were told...

We stayed here just for a night during our trip and for this purpose it was perfect: easy to find, quite inexpensive and just in a walking distance from the train station (worth seeing itself!) and underground station (Gojo). The staff was kind and helpful, they recommended a local restaurant around a corner and we were not disapponted. As we...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
