We used this hotel, even got our family to come from Tokyo, because it was mentioned in the Lonely planet. Surely they mean well. But this Ryokan is not what one expects. The room, we had western rooms are ok. Nothing fancy, clean, but small. AND the tower were terrible. Small and old, not able to dry my body after...

Stayed with my sister, mum and 3 yr old son, two in each room. Fabulous rooms, especially garden room on ground floor. Needed the heating as was rather cold on entering, but otherwise was wonderful. Even had kimonos to wear in our rooms, even little one for my son which was such fun. Very complicated rules for footwear on different...

Just stayed here for 2 nights. Loved it. The hosts were lovely and always there to help. I liked the traditional feel of the ryokan. Stayed in a Japanese room which was really comfortable. Extremely clean and the Japanese breakfast was excellent. I will return-:)

Having only stayed in hotels and apartments this was indeed an amazing experience. The Inn was spotless and clean and the hosts could not do enough to make us feel welcome. The rooms were all detailed with authentic artwork with some having small courtyard gardens to the side. If you find yourself in Kyoto and would like an incredible japanese...

Hosts are friendly and very helpful. They made their best effort to provide me with an enjoyable stay. I was introduced to the room and explained clearly what were the rules of stay. The hotel has a home-like atmosphere, clean, and tidy. I stayed in both Japanese-style and Western-style rooms. My preference is the Japanese-style. It was snowing in Kyoto...

Service: Very kind and comprehensive. Hosts helped us with all kinds of things like restaurant selection, transportation tips, etc. English is quite proficient. Room: Small but bery elegant Japanese Ryokan room. Location: 10 mins walk from Kyoto train station, 20 mins walk from Kiyomizu Temple, and 5 mins walk from bus station that goes directly to Golden Pavillion.

This cozy hotel is very convenient as it is a short distance walk from Kyoto Station. We stayed for about 4 days in their traditional Japanese rooms. The rooms are clean and well kept, during this time of winter they also have heaters so even though you sleep in a futon you won't be cold. Sleeping quality is good if...

We rocked up on January 4th, 2013. We had no booking but read that Lonely Planet recommends it. We wanted a traditional Japanese room, however, there were none available. They did have western style available, and even though we were there at 10am, a few hours before check-in. They let us into the room, showed us around and let us...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
