Service: Very kind and comprehensive. Hosts helped us with all kinds of things like restaurant selection, transportation tips, etc. English is quite proficient. Room: Small but bery elegant Japanese Ryokan room. Location: 10 mins walk from Kyoto train station, 20 mins walk from Kiyomizu Temple, and 5 mins walk from bus station that goes directly to Golden Pavillion.

This cozy hotel is very convenient as it is a short distance walk from Kyoto Station. We stayed for about 4 days in their traditional Japanese rooms. The rooms are clean and well kept, during this time of winter they also have heaters so even though you sleep in a futon you won't be cold. Sleeping quality is good if... More

We rocked up on January 4th, 2013. We had no booking but read that Lonely Planet recommends it. We wanted a traditional Japanese room, however, there were none available. They did have western style available, and even though we were there at 10am, a few hours before check-in. They let us into the room, showed us around and let us... More

We stayed here for only 1 night in Dec 2012. We had a garden view room on the 1st floor. We really enjoyed our experience here. Staff made us feel very welcome and it was interesting to stay in a ryokan. We had breakfast there as well the food selection was standard we had the eggs and toast but it... More

We were very impressed with the staff at Matsubaya Ryokan - they were super helpful at all times, and the tour at the start was really useful as it was our first ryokan stay. They also gave us a great run down of the important sites and the public transport options. It helped make us feel at home, and almost... More

This was the second Ryokan we stayed at on our holiday in Japan. It was in a very good location only about 10 minutes walk from Kyoto Station. We were disappointed as we chose this due to all the wonderful reviews on Trip Advisor. We felt that we could have been staying in a 'block of flats'. Yes we had... More

We chose the Matsubaya Inn to be our first experience of a ryokan and we weren't disappointed. Situated 10mins away from the station and close to a bus stop, it's convenient for exploring Kyoto and beyond. The Gion area is a 25min walk away but you can easily catch buses or taxis. We were greeted by friendly staff who spoke... More

This was one of our favourite hotels on our tour of Japan. We paid a bit extra for a garden room but it was definitely worth it. A lovely clean, comfortable, traditional ryokan close to the train station and lots of bus stops that get you to all the key sites (you can buy a day bus ticket from the... More

It's a nice and sweet experience in the red leaf season Kyoto with Matsubaya Inn. We stayed in Matsubaya Inn for 2 days for the beautiful autumn color in Kyoto. The inn is located about 10 minutes walk to the Kyoto station. With the access map on the website, it's easy to find it. The inn is located with many... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
