This is a traditional style Japanese inn. Our host was extremely polite and helpful, and spoke English well. Our room is large enough, and has plenty of cupboard space, a large round table, two fold out futon beds with ample linen, and tea making facilities. Note that the Ryokan does feature 'shared bathrooms' but this really isn't to your detriment,...

Despite the thin walls, most guests seem to respect the silence of the place. Quite well located, although not in the most active part of Kyoto. Very clean, big room (Japanese-Style Economy Twin Room with Shared Bathroom). Better futons than in other places. Definitely recommended.

A great traditional ryokan in Kyoto. As mentioned in other reviews, this place is out of the city center but is very well connected. Just hop on the bus and you'll be in most places of interest in max 30 minutes. The place itself is very nice and simple. Everything is very clean and therefore sharing a shower is not...

Absolutely wonderful! It's an old house, but with absolutely modern, even luxurious toilets and showers (with soap, shampoo, conditioner, hair dryer under the sink), and many of them, too. The rooms are old japanese style, that means: tatami, futon and zabuton (cushions to sit on), as well as electric water kettle and tea bags and biscuits. You have a little...

It's a Japanese old-style hotel in Kyoto. It's not close to the city center (about 35 minutes in bus from Kyoto station and about 10 minutes walking from the nearest underground station). In our case we rented bikes, which is a very suitable way to discover the city. Hotel is clean and staff is very helpful (we had a problem...

Great place to spend a few days in Kyoto. It is not very close to the city center but 205 and 206 buses which are very close will bring you everywhere! Hosts were very kind and always available. Clean rooms and bathrooms. We did not like the idea of shared bathrooms and showers but everything is very well organized. Umbrellas,...

Comfortable futons on tatami matting. Great traditional ryokan room. Washing machine & drier available along with small kitchen and fridge which was useful as we stayed for 6 nights. Good wifi connection in communal areas & probably most rooms. Our room was at the end of a corridor and therefore tended to struggle. No ensuite but good quality shower rooms...

This hotel is located in the midst of a neighborhood. It take about 10-15 minutes walk from the JR station. Enjoy their food of traditional Japanese culture and staff hospitality. Didn't stay in the hotel long enough to use other facilities as I started my day early to tour the city in order to avoid the crowd and stretch my...

i stayed here with two friends and we all thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful ryokan. We were warmly welcomed and showed around by the owner who spoke very good English. The accommodation was very large for three people and included a separate dining area and toilet for us. There is also a sitting area near the front door for anyone who...

Very pleasant host, nice comfortable room with nice beds. Bathrooms had excellent showers. Location is fine as very near subway and bus routes. Good supermarket and lovely bakery nearby, plus a Starbucks, so good breakfast choices.

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
