We loved our stay here at the Rakucho Ryokan. It is an older wooden house but all the other guests were polite and it was very quiet. Our room and the bath was remarkably clean. Of all the tatami mats we stayed on, these "beds" were actually the most comfortable. Our room was warm, overlooked a lovely garden and there... More

This is a very reasonably priced Ryokan in a good location. The owners are very friendly, and we were made to feel very welcome during our stay. The rooms were clean, very comfortable and had all the essentials you might need (tea, water heater, heated blanket/air con.) Towels were not provided but this is quite common at ryokans. The only... This place was about a 10 minute walk away from the Kitaoji station on the north side of Kyoto, but the bus is also easily accessible. There staff was very friendly and it was a well-maintained place. The ryokan is made entirely out of wood, so it's not soundproof and you have to be quiet while in the the rooms... More

A great place in the north side of town, a little bit of a hike from the center but Kyoto's excellent bus system makes it a breeze. Loved the second floor toilet that raises the seat when you enter the room, rather charming. They have buss passes, maps and a ton of information on sightseeing, airport transfers, etc. If you... We stayed for 3 nights at Rakucho Ryokan in March and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The welcome was great and welcoming. You remove your shoes at the front and slip into slippers (they even have ones big enough for big footed westerners - not usually the case). The futons were very comfortable and they had very fast wifi available throughout... More

My partner and I arrived at this Ryokan at 11.30pm after a delayed flight, and the key to our room with a map of the property was ready waiting for us when we arrived (the owner didn't wait up, which was fine). Don't forget to take off your shoes when you enter this lovely, quaint little Ryokan, it is very... More

We stayed in this great ryokan for three weeks on our second trip to Japan. It was a wonderful experience, not in the least because of the friendly and helpful owners. To sum it up: the ryokan is clean, comfortable, well situated, has very good futons, inexpensive. A great place to stay! Rakucho Ryokan is located in a lovely neighbourhood,... More

Me and my wife was looking for a budget Japanese style hotel in Kyoto and found Rakucho Ryokan. We were much surprised when we arrived since we excepted a pretty low standard since the price was low. But after have been at a couple of other places we can easily say that Rakucho Ryokan was the best place we stayed... More

My husband and I have spent over 10 days in this Ryokan, in 2 separate periods and loved it ! The futon mattress is super comfortable and the rooms we had were spacious. The room is twice as big as the room we had in another ryokan in Tokyo but for the same price. The neighbourhood is quiet and has... More

Most comfortable futons *ever*! The whole place is well-kept & squeaky clean so we didn't mind sharing bathrooms. So clean, in fact, that we wondered if we were the only people using the soaking tub every night. Many useful amenities for the budget traveller: refrigerators, some silverware, microwave, laundry facilities, free use of computer/internet. They also sell one-day bus passes,... More

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
