We enjoyed our stay at the Sunroute hotel. It's a little off the beaten path but actually very conveniently located to some popular shopping and eating areas and it is just a short walk to the subway station. The hotel itself is basic, but roomy, nice and clean. Staff was friendly and the little cafe attached had decent lunch options.

Restaurant is on the 10th floor: great view with your breakfast, which was very good. This is hotel is conveniently placed for shopping and Kyoto's market (a must-see). It doesn't have a spa, hot spring baths or swimming pool that I was used to in my tour of Japan but Kyoto is a lot more touristy than other places I...

This was a standard, small hotel with small rooms of average convenience. Front desk staff had very little English, nor much advice when I tried to enquire about taxis in Japanese. Luggage left with staff before check-in is in the open so the lobby is always full of suitcases. Two pros: nice views of the river from our room, and...

This hotel was within walking distance of Gion, Nishiki Market, and Pontocho (we're from Chicago, we walk a lot), but it was a bit far from the subway. You won't need the subway a lot (Kyoto has a very small subway system) but it is worth noting for your departure/arrival and for when you want to go see Fushimi Inari-taisha...

The hotel is just a short walk from the Gion District which is really nice. Also, there's a bunch of great Bars and Restaurants all around the hotel. The rooms were good, nothing to complain about, good views of the surrounding area, comfy beds and good bathroom. The buffet is located on the top floor which has a spectacular view...

This hotel is in a good location, easy walk to lots of restaurants and bars in Gion. Our room was good, happy with the room and bathroom, the room even had a massage chair! Very welcome after hours of walking around every day :) We had breakfast included and I really liked their selection of Japanese breakfast, my husband enjoyed...

Very clean and modern hotel in Kyoto. Room was small but again expected for Japanese standards. Even has a massage chair! Location is not the most convenient for travellers heading out of Kyoto. It is 7 minutes walk from Kiyomizudera (non-JR) and requires another change to Tofukuji (JR station) in order to get to Kyoto station. Nevertheless, the subway journey...

Very convenient with a walking distance to lots of things to do. But be prepared, the rooms are very small( this is Japan after all) The Subway is about a 4 minute drive. Don't miss the 10th floor restaurant view and great food. I was happily surprised at the price of the good meals 👍👍 Wirth

Excellent service and a warm welcome. The room is a good size for budget hotel, especially for a few days. Excellent breakfast with unrivalled views - good laundry facilties. Excellent location for sightseeing around Kyoto - we hired cycles for a day and this is another great way of seeing the city.

We spent 2 nights in this hotel in the 2 person twin room. This room had 2 twin beds, a table and chair, refrigerator, tea and hair dryer. The bathroom was tiny, think cruise ship bathroom but it was very clean. The room was tight but were were not there other then to sleep. The breakfast on the 10th floor...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
