stayed for 3 nights with family of 4 in 2 rooms. One facing the North with nice views of the Eastern and Northern hills. A comfortable stay for all of us and I thought the price of the rooms were not unreasonable. The only complaint is the outrageous price for the breakfast buffet downstairs (2 Floor) - 2900 yen per... We chose to stay here instead of the Kyoto Station area because of a cheap deal we found over hotels.com. The shuttle bus from Kyoto Station was a little hard to find as the bus actually departs outside the Kintetsu Rail area at the back of the terminal. Look for a bus stop named "REX", that's where the bus picks... More

We stayed here for 3 nights in December 2010 with my husband and 2 kids under 7. Room size was huge and shower was awesome. Hotel shuttle was awesome when we finally found it. Staff was polite but not exceptionally helpful. Concierge provided minimal information and one word answers. Hotel is very dated and somewhat stuffy. We were very put... More

Chose this room and booked and paid to get specifically a room with City View (the view is very important to us). So got that and at reception they told us they sort of 'upgraded' us to a room renovated in 2005.... ok thanks.. but does that also mean for the same price one might get something less pleasant? Lucky... More

+ good location to explore Kyoto by foot, although at first glance seems to be a bit far from the center. That's right, but city center is full of commercial and business buildings, while suburbs are just what you need to experience real Kyoto (which, by the way, was charming). + large and impressive lobby + nice breakfast, but not... I liked the Westin Miyako. Overall, the rooms were not unlike those in the US. Some of the staff were very helpful, others were a little snooty. We did take advantage of the shuttle to Kyoto Station, which was nice. I was able to walk to Heian Shrine and Nanzengi and Eikando Temples. There is a subway station very close... More

I got a great deal by redeeming Starwood points. As a Gold SPG member, I wasn't upgraded because the hotel was booked solid. The room I was given was in the south wing, which had a partial view of the beautiful birdwalking trail. The room itself was a time capsule of the 80s, so very dated and somewhat rundown. However,... If you are looking for a plush haven, this ain't it. This is a basic hotel, no frills added. Very hard beds, though softer than a tatami mat. Definitely a grand hotel at some point in time, but it has lost some luster. Good location with a metro nearby. Nice shuttle service to the main JR train station.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
