Location is great, very close to Tokyo Station with access to buses, trains and the subway. This is definitely a quaint Japanese version of a B&B so don't expect all the hotel frills. It was a great, quiet, comfortable stay in a traditional ryokan. Be respectful and know the expectations (quiet, tranquility, no shoes past the front door) and you'll...

No wonder this place had an excellent rate from tripadvisor. For homestay is it more, especially for the cleanness of the showe room n toilet.. much more clean than in a hotels...I love it. I stayed here with my family n we are very very happy...with the room and the cleanness. For us the rules is ok since for the...

Ryokan is relatively easy to find in a neighbourhood street. However, a little overrated. Upon arrival, the check in is only at 4pm which is rather late compared to a hotel. Pricing was rather higher than hotels in the Sanjo area but we thought that it would be wiser to move to a hotel closer to the Kyoto station to...

It was my husband's first trip to Japan, and I wanted him to experience staying at a ryokan. I came across this little gem on booking.com and tripadvisor and thought this would be a nice place to try, yet also much more affordable than other ones i found in Kyoto. Location is great, it was about 10-min walk from the...

For the reasonable price this ryokan was very suitable for a few nights in Kyoto. Near the station in a quiet residential area. Nothing fancy but clean and friendly. No food is served but there is a great convenience store just down the street. Beds were clean and comfortable. Bathroom was clean. Room was very clean. Owners / staff were...

We stayed at ryokan shimizu for one night and we loved it! It was our first time staying at a Japanese hotel and we were a little nervous since we didn't know what to expect. We were shown to our room and got welcome tea. The room was great and the futon was very comfy. The service was truly great...

Ryokan Shimizu is like an unexpected gem that you find that you just come across sometimes. My husband and I only stayed for one night, but we already know that if we were to return to Kyoto, we would definitely stay there again. Prior to stay: they advertise their private onsen on their website and indicate that you need to...

This is what I expected from Ryokan. Great localisation close to main train station which is a must for Kyoto sightseeing, all the buses departs from this place not to mention trains toNara etc. Family who runs this place is super friendly and helpful. They even prepared for us a special tea in the evening and brought it directly to...

Great service, good size rooms for a ryokan and a nice Japanese bath available on the first floor. Owners were as hospitable as you would expect in Japan. Very close to the station which we walked with all our luggage in tow with no problems. Can't go wrong staying here.

On our recent stay in Japan we wanted to spend a night in a Ryokan. The location of this particular place is incredibly useful being only a short walk from the train station. The place itself is lovely, full of memorabilia from around the world given to the owners by guests. The room we had was spacious, incredibly clean and...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
