We stayed in the Budget Inn for 3 nights in Kyoto. We booked the golden pavillon room for our family of 2 adults and 2 young children. The lobby area and corridors were tiny, but this room was BIG by Jap standards. It came with a toilet with heated seat, and a separate bathroom, and a sink area for boiling water and making tea.
We only needed the basics as we were mostly out the whole day. It was a really cosy and comfortable place to stay after a long day out sightseeing.
When we arrived, 4 thick spring mattresses were already laid out on the tatami. Compared with very thin tatamis found in most jap style room, these were extremely luxurious!
The room was clean, although the TV area was slightly dusty, and it could be better without the golden wall paper.
It is not a hotel, so housekeeping service was minimal. Big bottles of shampoo and body soap were provided, which was good. Towels have to be rented, but reasonable.
The location is great; 15min walk from JR Kyoto station which has lots of food and shopping. Also a short walk to Takeda hospital if you need to look for a english speaking doctor.
Staff not very friendly, but was helpful because he spoke good english. The coin operated laundry and dryer was also very useful. Will definitely recommend it.

Staying 4 nights in this ryokan backpacker gives us great experiences. This ryokan is in an alley not far away from Kyoto Station (5-8 minutes walk). Simply exit station from the north gate then turn left passing 2 traffic lights. The alley just across of Omron Building.

The staff was great and friendly. 'Home made' printed guidance for tourist was very useful and handy. It's also very close to 7 eleven, Lawson and Nakau (less expensive japanese 24/7 meals).

The room was very clean with very good shower and hotwater. The size wad suitable for us as Asian.

Definetly I will stay in this Ryokan again whenever in Kyoto.

We decided to book this place because it offers a Japanese-style room. The room is so clean, the mattress comfortable, and the bathtub is so deep and comfortable. This place also allows us to arrive after midnight. Due to flight arrival, we arrived Kyoto past midnight. The staff has left the keys for us to enter our room without any problems, and check-in is the following morning. We love that flexibility.

The staffs speak English fluently, so communication is no problem. They are also kind and helpful. We can leave our baggage after check out, which was very helpful.

Small Inn in the middle of Kyoto. Located just around 10-15 minutes walk from Kyoto station, this inn offers an experience to stay in ryokan style inn in affordable price.
We booked a room for 4 persons and the room was nice and clean. They won't let you to put any luggage in the room since it can break down tatami, but they provide the cupboard to put your stuff. The receptionist is located in different building,so you need to walk a bit to other building to do check-in and check-out.
One thing is when we are there, the bathroom door cannot be locked. Overall, this is a nice place to stay

Our family of 4 (2 adults and two kids age 14 and 7) stayed in an en suite style Japanese style room December 2014 for 3 nights. We had to check in at the Capsule Ryokan around the corner where the very nice person at the desk walked us to our room and gave us a brief tour to orient us for our stay. The en suite is essentially a small Japanese apartment with a shower room, separate toilet, mini-kitchenette, storage area and tatami room with large closet. The tatami room was very spacious and the futons were very comfortable. It was raining the day we checked in and thankfully both the Budget Inn and Capsule Ryokan had umbrellas we could borrow for free.

Despite the website saying you needed to bring or rent towels, they provided 4 bath towels and 1 hand towel at no additional charge that they told me we could use for our entire stay.

While there is a sink/mini fridge/hot water kettle in the room, we still used the common area kitchen where there were ample dishes and a microwave so we could enjoy the desserts we picked up in town. There are some travel books including some great notebooks with pictures and information of local attractions that someone made for the Budget Inn.

The location is pretty good. Short walk to multiple convenience stores and about 10 minutes to Kyoto Station area where there are multiple malls and a large variety of restaurants. ATMs at 7-11 and Post Office are within 5-10 minute walk.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay. This place is clean and good sized for families without the hefty costs other hotels tried to charge us to have 4 people in a room. The staff is very nice, knowledgeable and speaks English. They have a lot of documentation about the area so if you failed to research Kyoto prior to arrival, you can find everything you need in the notebook they provide in your room. One thing we noticed is that this room has a lot of outlets. Way more outlets than normal hotels which was great to charge up all our various electronics every night.

Note - this ryokan is best for people who are not high maintenance and comfortable with a certain level of DIY. If you or any member of your party has diva tendencies or is looking for everything to be brand spanking new, this is not the place for you. This is not a 5-star-cater-to-your-every-whim hotel. This place is very functional and there were more amenities available than I expected, but they were self serve. I think the staff goes out of their way to be as helpful as possible but do have limited hours.

If you are fairly independent travelers and are looking for a Japanese guesthouse experience at a reasonable price and ample information in English, I would happily recommend Budget Inn.

Our family stayed in Kyoto for four nights and found the staff incredibly helpful. Our room had a small kitchen with a fridge and kettle and there is a larger well-equipped kitchen downstairs. Every thought has been out into how to make the traveller's life easier - from the free laundry soap to the mini maps of the area detailing recommended restaurants. The staff all speak excellent English and know the city and the bus routes by heart. Great value. Please open one in Tokyo!

My three kids and I stayed here for four nights and had a great visit. The room was very comfortable and we slept well on the traditional bedding. The Budget Inn has thought of EVERYTHING to make your stay convenient. They had plug adaptors, laundry detergent, shampoo and soap, a place to cook and room to hang out. They provide information on what to do in Kyoto and the surrounding area for any length of visit. You could arrive without a plan and just follow their itinerary and have a very efficient stay. They had good maps and transportation information, including directions in Japanese in case you decide to use a cab. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. We would definitely stay here again without hesitation.

We stayed with my wife and daughter for 2 nights, and it was great. Granted, it is not cheap for any other country standards, but for Japan, it is quite reasonable, and the place was very clean and confortable, ryokan-like style, so gave us a flavor of Japan-style lodging, and located very close to the Kyoto terminal, so provided excellent point from where to start the day. Overall, excellent!

Our family of 4 has just returned from a holiday in Japan. We spent 3 nights at the Budget Inn at Kyoto which provided us with excellent budget priced accomodation. We had a Golden Room with private bathroom and toilet and inner spring mattresses which were a luxury compared with the futons at other places where we stayed. The recreation room was a great place to meet other travellers and we appreciated the coin laundry on site. The location near the train station and bus terminal was extremely convenient for sightseeing in Kyoto and for making day trips. There was a good supply of restaurants and convenience stores nearby. My daughter and I enjoyed trying on a yukata. The Budget Inn rented out bicycles at very reasonable rates; our only gripe was that 4 of the bikes lined up outside were 'out of order'.

We are a family of four and stayed at the Budget Inn for four nights and we were so happy. The service is so good and friendly; they have thought about everything you could need as a tourist. The bed are really good, we slept so well and the rooms are clean.

It's nearby the train station witch is nice when you arrive, leave and are going places. There are many places to eat in the area and hang out with locals. There's also a french bakery and in the trainstation there's an cafe if you need to start your morning with something familiar.

It is far from the center, the old City and many of the tourist places but it is easy to move around in Kyoto and the taxi is not that ekspensive.

(Sorry for my poor english)
