Detailed Reviews
This is a great hostel as long as you understand what you’re going there for. The building isn’t the nicest looking from the outside, the street isn’t the quietest or the cleanest. But this isn’t why you’re staying here- all the essentials are done very well and very cheap. There’s high powered aircon in the reception and the rooms, good wifi in reception, and all the dorm room doors lock. The bathrooms are clean and well-maintained. 1.5L bottles of cold water can be purchased at reception for RM2, which is super convenient.
Further, the location is excellent. In the middle of Chinatown, which is central to a lot of KL’s attractions. To get there from the airport, take the express train to KL Sentral then the red monorail line to Pasar Seni. The monorail is close and can get you to a lot of places.
If you’re staying in a dorm, bring an eye mask- if you end up on the top bunk and someone turns the lights on, you’re not getting back to sleep.

Reasonable price with breakfast included in the morning. Efficient and service-orientated staff. Credits to Jack and the Bangladeshi guy (Shahrul - hope I have spelt his name right). Both of them really made the effort to make sure I have a bed to stay as the hostel was packed and full during the time I was there, so their effort has to be appreciated and commended. A comfy vibe in the hostel as there are quality and friendly human interactions between guests and also with the staff. Clean and decent environment. Perfect location in the city center. Additionally, in this hostel one can also meet other different nationalities of travellers and backpacker as well. Overall, I enjoyed my stay there in the hostel, a place which u can know friends and enjoy a good hostel stay.

Once we found this place (after walking around looking for over an hour in 30+ degree temps) we were very impressed. The security starts immediately you arrive at the door which is permanently locked and you have to enter by buzzing reception. The location is great, 2 min walk to Central Market, China Town and buses. The city is easy to navigate by MRT, LRT and bus. There is a free bus that regularly travels during the day to various points of interest and goes until about 10.30 at night. The staff were extremely helpful with room questions, questions of the area and general KL and tour questions. They have great internet and wifi facilities (just some guests need to take heed of the 30 min limit of computers so everyone gets a turn). The rooms were clean and tidy and very roomy with plenty of power points to charge cameras and phones. The bathroom was great, roomy and never saw another person in there. They have a rooftop garden/swing with a great view. Will definitely stay again should we return to KL and def recommend to other travellers.

My 6 bedded dorm room is on the 3rd floor (had to climb 3 flights of stairs). American numbering would be 4th floor. No easy on the old knees although there was a landing on each staircase. I was quite pleased with the bedding and the blanket wasn't the thick type so I presumed it was washed after 3 uses. I did bring a sari shawl to cover my face. The bath towel was ok.
As stated by another guest, it is the problems with fellow dorm mates (the other guests on that floor, not so) The instructions on the door of a larger dorm rooms stated that after 11 pm, dorm residents are asked to turn down the volume of their devices. Unfortunately this middle eastern woman decided it was ok to use her laptop until past 3 am. It wasn't on full blast but still her laptop was just 2 feet away from the head of my bunk bed. Suffice to say I didn't get much sleep that night and I had to get up at 5.30 am to catch a bus to a convention 25 km away.
The management should strictly state that residents should use ear buds/in ear earphones after 11 pm.
The dorm room are small and cramped and with the bunk beds being in such close proximity, it would hardly be considerate to have this low irritating noise buzzing, inches from your ears.
There is an iron with ironing board on the ground floor next to the reception. There are water heaters in the 2 bathroom. The first one had a rain shower with a hand held. Bit of tricky using it. Shower gel is provided but hard to pump out the liquid soap. There are a few clothes lines out in the open at the back of the guesthouse. Didn't go check out the roof top terrace. There is no fridge/stove. The microwave oven is spoilt. There is a water filter in the small pantry area. Toilet paper is provided but no slippers. I think guests are supposed to take off their footwear before entering the larger dorms. Didn't see any instructions to that effect. The lockers (bring own locks) are outside the dorms on the right side as you walk along the corridor. I think there are about 5 units. The rest cannot be locked because the keys no longer worked

Worst hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Was so dirty - sheets weren’t clean, table wasn’t wiped down, floors hadn’t been vacuumed in weeks. And so.much.dust. The entire hostel and stairwell had so much dust that people had written in the dust. Can’t say much about breakfast because we decided not to eat there because it was so dirty in the hostel that it was unbelievable. Bathrooms were also horrific, that we often went to go pee in the hostel next door.
We switched rooms because as 2 female travelers we did not feel safe. We didn’t see one single woman while staying here, and were constantly being harassed. I understand that staff can’t do much about who stays there, and they did let us switch rooms. This just goes to a warning to female travelers, solo or not, that it is less than safe. Men were waiting outside our room and knocking at 5 am, and would ask us in the reception the next day why we wouldn’t hangout with them. Again I acknowledge staff can’t do much about it but it’s still the reality of this hostel.
Overall a very scary and very dirty stay. We left earlier than planned.
The majority of the “excellent” reviews here are from men. The women reviews are about how scared they were and how management did little about it. Would never recommend this hostel to ANYONE.

Really unclean rooms, you wouldn’t want to walk around with no shoes on in a room, even a private room. The floor is covered in bits of gum, food, hair and who knows what else. The rooms definitely feel like prisons cells. There’s nothing wrong with a basic hostel but there’s no excuse for somewhere to be that dirty. I would not recommend staying any longer than you need to, I unfortunately stayed three nights.

Downstairs area is not too bad to sit and eat or use WiFi. Staff we saw later on seemed a little friendlier. Location is good for cheap food like Indian and Chinese. Not to far to walk to the train station too. AC worked well.
First impressions weren’t great. Check in was very simple and nothing like breakfast etc explained. Room smelt like feet and there was no window. WiFi didn’t reach the room. Area around the hostel is also a little rough.

I didn't feel safe in this guest house. Someone (I assumed a guest) sleeping on a couch close to my room and making noise all the time. In another occasion, someone trying to open the door while I was in the room. There are unknown people, guest, friends of owner or staff in the lobby all the time. I don't normally review but I would suggest looking for other accommodation if you want to find it near Chinatown.

Guy at the reception gave me the feelimg i disturbed him everytime i had a question.
Single rooms without window, no own bathroom and no wifi except in the lobby!!!
Pretty clean and the other staff was nice but the first two impressions made me think very bad about this hostel.

Checked in for 3 nights and within 4 hours had decided to look for another place.
Yes it is very very cheap and the location is really good but
The twin room had no window, it was dirty, we found a condom wrapper under the bed and most of the slats on the bed were broken.
The pictures on booking.com must havce been taken several years ago. There was also mould above the AC unit. The AC did work well. When we spoke to reception about us leaving they didn't sound too surprised or bothered but did give us a refund.
If you need somewhere on a total budget then it's fine if you can afford anything else then take it.

Hi,
unfortunately we are unable to attach pictures here, you can google The Explorers Guesthouse Kuala Lumpur to see pictures of book as well. For a couple, we recommend Standard Double Room. The rates varies depending on the dates you stay, it varies between RM 50 to 70 per night, you can refer to Booking com for updated rates, there will be a Tourism Tax of RM10/night if both staying are foreigners on top of the room rent.
Yes, wifi on the first floor so everyone kinda hangs out there. I was a solo traveler at the time and ended up going out for dinner with 3 others that night. Everyone's experience is different though
