Detailed Reviews
Staff are unfriendly and make you feel absolutely unwelcome. Cameras in shared dorms are invasive, and unnecessary since the doors are secured and everyone’s got a lock box. The upper bunks are a major hazard and the rails to hold onto are wobbly.
Otherwise a well located hostel, tidy, well kept, party hostel that makes you sign a waiver upon check in saying “you won’t write a review online regarding noise or we will do everything in our power with the website to remove it” totally corrupt.

Response from Reggae_MansionAdmin, Manager at Reggae Mansion Kuala Lumpur
Responded 13 Oct 2017
Dear Guest, Thank you for your review. Please be reminded that we are a party hostel, it is stated on our website and all the booking platforms. It is expected that there will be party related noise during night time. It is expected from the guests that they are aware of it. And upon check in the registration clearly state it as well. So what is the corruption there? Why stay with us in the first place if you are not happy with us being a party hostel? Feel free you go and find another boring hostel out there.

Me and my partner stayed at the Reggae Mansion in KL during the back end of June. We stayed for 3 nights before going onto Bangkok.
We picked the reggae mansion, as it had a real hotel feel to it and we took one of the double pod rooms for ourselves on the second floor.
I think it's easier to list some of the good and not so good points:
Good
- Done to a nice spec throughout.
- Palette of facilities like a rooftop bar, cinema, indoor and outdoor cafe.
- The staff seem pleasant enough.
- Very good location, literally ten min walk from the metro system.
Not so good
- The rooftop bar, great addition but don't think as a couple you can have a quiet drink. The bar is generally always busy with young (mainly lardy da gap year students) who on the whole are lovely, but like with everything the did few can't handle a drink. The isn't helped by the bar encouraging shots and pouring drink down everyone's throats. Oh and hide your cigarettes, the number of time we would have 18 year olds having a empty convo to then ask for something....
- The rooftop bar, again. Excellent that that the venue offers this however. Be cautious, we were on the second floor (building has four floors) and the bass was making the windows shake not to mention it goes on till about 3am near enough everyday. If you wanting to get an early night, or sleep well without the need to drink yourself into submission. I think this could be a deal breaker. We had an early flight the next day so went to bed about 12:00 and ended up getting about 2 hours sleep.
- Showers/toilets
There seemed to be much less facilities for the guys than girls. As the shower and loo is combined in a booth silly things would happen like the loo roll would get soaked and everything was constantly wet. Small pet peeve but it didn't match up to everything else.
- Breakfast
This was horrific, toast was like gorilla warfare as some of the kids would feel the need to steal what you have just toasted, so don't leave the toasted once you've placed the bread in. The noodles were ok but I don't think this shows of Malaysian breakfasts any justice, we did street food everyday and was significantly better. Oh and avoid the coffee, this was like a tasteless overly milky tea.
The mansion itself is really nice. On the whole would consider going back.the main thing really is that it's very clean, secure and great location. Just bring ear plugs, sleeping pills and find out what floor your on.

I really have mixed feelings about Reggae Mansion... On one side, it's clean, central and the beds in the dorms each have a curtain (which allows for some privacy), a light and a locker.
But...
- Expensive: it's more expensive than all similar guesthouses that you'll find in Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia, in Thaïland, etc. And it's not better. The key deposit is ridiculously expensive (more than some rooms). Beware that if you don't keep your receipt, they won't reimburse you (and of course, they don't warn you about that). Pretty sure you can find a better and cheaper accommodation.
- Rude staff: if you're traveling in South-East Asia, you're probably used to Asians being kind and helpful with tourists. Well NOT at Reggae Mansion. They are rude, they don't smile, they don't say hello nor thanks. They just take your money and send you off to your bedroom like you're a grounded child.
- Racist policy: they don't accept Malaysians and some other nationalities. I was truly shocked as we witnessed a couple of Asian backpackers being refused just because they weren't Westerners. Seriously, what kind of hotels select their clients based on their nationality?! What kind of places refuse their own locals?!
- Noisy: if your room is on the 2nd floor, you WON'T sleep due to the noise from the rooftop bar.

I didn't really stay here and checked out after 1h. My bed had stains on it, my mirror had blood stains on it, and empty medicine was lying next to my bed. I booked a 6 bed room and was placed in a 8 bed room. The beds are big and all in pods which give you privacy but the room size was the width of 2-3 doors and the length of two bed pods and that was it. I've stayed in hostels around the world but that's just a bad joke so I checked out after 1h there. The staff didn't even ask why I'm already checking out and wouldn't refund me for the remaining nights until I asked them. I stayed in a hotel around the corner and I have to say, the neighborhood is dirty, busy, and sketchy. It's very close to Chinatown, Central Market and it's very easy to get to KLCC and KL Sentral. You can even walk there! However, based on my experiences, I wouldn't recommend this place.

Stayed here a while ago whilst working in KL. Wanted to have a local friend up to the bar for drinks and he was barred at entry, told they don't allow "locals", he's from Kuching. As we were arguing with the staff numerous white people walked past reception without a second glance.
Stay at Back Home instead, just up the road, much nicer and more inclusive.

When I first arrived I thought I had found Hostel Heaven - their facilities are beautiful and I really enjoyed the pod beds. It became hell very quickly. Incompetent, rude staff, having to use the internet to rebook rooms, and extremely overpriced tours. What is really disturbing though is their blatant racism. They say on their website they don't accept bookings from people in Malaysia, India and Middle East countries. From my experience, this also applies to their restaurant and bar facilities.
I tried to bring a friend with "dark skin" to the hostel for a drink at the Rooftop Bar. He had just arrived from London to work in KL and was staying at a 5 star Marriott. I'm not sure what his ethnicity was because it never occurred to me to ask such a question.
When we first arrived and started to walk upstairs to the bar they said the bar was closed. Next they said it was only for hotel guests and then again said regardless, it's closed. We walked outside and could hear the music pumping and saw three other guests on their way out. We asked them if the bar was still open and they said yes, it's really busy. We also asked them if they were staying at the hostel and they were not.
We went back inside when the staff began asking where my friend for his passport - they wanted to know where he was from. The guard was using his radio to call up to the bar - he kept saying London and Pakistan - apparently they thought my friend was from Pakistan, not London. My friend showed the guard his Marriott room key but since he could not produce his passport, we were not allowed to go upstairs. They specifically said if he could produce his passport and was in fact from London, we could go upstairs, but no passport no entry.
I asked to see the manager and this horrible Chinese guy came down to talk to us - apparently he's the owner. When I told him what happened, and that 3 other people who just left were not guests at the hostel, he started yelling at me and telling me to get out.
The day before this happened, I had made a reservation for an extra night with one of the reception employees. Their internet was down (they don't like to take new bookings in person, you have to reserve each additional night on the internet and usually change beds). The next morning I came down and asked which room I needed to move to and they said I didn't have a reservation. I told her I made a reservation with the staff the day before but it didn't matter, she said you're not allowed to make bookings with the staff because they give "priority" to online bookings. I asked her to just check my name and see if a reservation was in the system. She said she did and there was no reservation. This was however before I told her what my name was. I asked her if she needed me to tell her my name but she said she knew it already. There was no booking and it didn't matter that I made a reservation the day before, they were full.
Concidence? Not sure. Fishy? Yes.
Regardless, I feel horrible that I stayed in a place like this and helped this hostel continue in their racist ways. I am familiar with properties having a policy that restricts local people from staying there. I was not aware this kind of restriction would also apply to guests in their public facilities. This kind of racism is inexcusable.

I am Spanish and I went with some friends from different countries to enjoy the world cup in Reggae Mansion and the reception did not allow to pass them. Only some germans friends and I were allowed to enter. The others who they have asian and arab roots where stopped in the main door with stupid excuses.
Definitely, I left my room in this moment and I moved to other guesthouse much cheaper and in the center city as well. Where everybody is allow to enter and they accept any culture and root.
It is a shame that nowadays this still happen, even in a big city like KL where they are mostly asian and indian and it is not the first review here which talk about this situation. I did not know this before because otherwise definitely I would not have host there.
In my opinion, customers must punish these behaves, the online reviews are the costumer power nowadays

Dear Guest, We strongly disagree with the title of you review. Racism is strictly not practice in reggae mansion we have been accepting walk in guests from all over the world including Malaysians and our records can attest to that. Recently we've been bombard with all the racism accusations and we understand that its human nature especially in the business world of competition that when you are on the top people will try to put you down. Whatever rewards we have earned it is the fruit of our labor and service to the people. We have met up with the criteria and the standards of the organizations who evaluated our property.

Dear Guest, Gentle Reminder: Please know the meaning of the word racist before you post your comment. Just because a person is not allowed to enter in a certain premises is being racist. We have to understand some establishments don't allow outsiders to get in for security purposes. Our top most priority is the safety and welfare of our guests. We have in house rules to follow, we expect all our guests to respect that. Thank you!

My boyfriend and I booked in to stay here for 3 nights based on the recommendations of a few people we'd met on our travels. The hostel is impressive at first sight, and the decor throughout really is beautiful - but this is where my praise for the place ends.
Issue #1: There are cameras in all of the dorm rooms, and they are watched 24/7 by the security guards at reception. Upon check-in, we noticed that the 2 security guards on duty were watching the screen and laughing and making jokes about whatever was going on in the dorms. We found this to be a huge invasion of privacy, and really put us off staying in the dorm for any longer than one night.
Issue #2: The top bunks are complete death traps! The ladder to the top bunks are completely vertical, and the bar to pull yourself up with is slippy and not in an easy-to-reach place! I was too scared to get up or down to the toilet in the middle of the night for the fear of falling and breaking my neck!
Issue #3: The price! This place is totally overpriced. At £10 a night per bed, we could have found a nice private room in a better location elsewhere in KL, but decided to give this place a try based on the recommendations of fellow travellers. Couldn't have been more disappointed.
Issue #4: The racist and ageist booking policy! As far as I can remember, you can't book into Reggae Mansion if you are older than 50 or are from a middle-eastern country. I don't personally fit into either of these categories but found this policy completely and utterly ridiculous. Had I known this prior to booking, it would have put me off completely.
On arrival, it became apparent to us that we wouldn't be happy to stay in the dorm we'd paid for for the 3 nights we had pre-booked due to the reasons above, so we asked at reception if we could move to a private room and pay the difference (as it was too late to cancel our booking altogether). Because the hostel was full on our first night, we were allowed to move the day after and only spent one night in the dorms (a sleepless one, as the couple in the bed next to me were getting quite closely acquainted - maybe what the security guys were having a good laugh about). The room we moved to the next day was fine - small and clean with a television but definitely not worth the extra money we had to spend on it.
Avoid.

We would like to remind our guests that before you book a place you should read the description, terms and condition and know the price so that you wont end up unsatisfied. Having read the above review gives us the impression that the writer don't know anything about the place they are heading to. Be prepared as a traveler. And if you pay cheap don't expect a 5 star service. Thank you.

I've traveled and stayed in countless hostels and I rarely go out of my way to write a negative review on any of them. However, as a government policy worker in the US- I would not forgive myself if I don't attempt to warn fellow travelers of color about this hostel.
I've stayed in this hostel for a little over a week. I loved it at first (it's a very aesthetically pleasing hostel with a movie theater and free dinner) but every time I step out for the day and come back later in the night (with other travelers who happen to be European white) I'm always the only one stopped by security and questioned if I really stay there. They not once looked at any of my other friends, they all looked at me telling me to prove that I stay there and demand me to tell them my bed number etc, Fortunately my other friends at all times questioned why was I being the only one being question but the security guards just brushed them off. This type of prejudice forced me to check out and stay at a much better hostel where they didn't have such ignorant staff.

I think so, the bar is definitely open every night. When I was there over Christmas we had a great DJ every night
Yes, I stayed there and never noticed an entrance fee for anyone. People outside the hostel are welcome. If you stay at the hostel you can get free passes to a club called Zion with the same owner as the hostel.
I think you won't have a problem since in july even two of the downstairs bar staff were malaysian-indians, if I say it correctly. Also, I think that the problem with the staff is not about racism. In fact, I think they are not racists. The are simply unkind and like to trick with the prices.
