I stayed at the YMCA during my recent visit to KL.This place is centrally located, reasonably priced, the rooms are adequate, the sheets and towels are clean. This may qualify as a budget place but its clean and safe.
A word of caution .Please check the condition of your room key when they give it to you.I had a bitter experience. My room key got damaged and twisted when i tried to open the door. The attitude of the check in clerk changed completely after this,he openly accused me of having damaged the keys and said he would have to consult with his manager. When the decision came i was rudely asked to pay for the keys. They charged me 63 MYR. Fair enough the keys were damaged in my hands, but the keys had been used by so many people before me and looked really old and worn out.Least they could have done was to settle for 50% of the cost. They would have none of that and literally railroaded me into paying this amount. They take all your money upfront in the beginning giving you no chance at all.On making subtle enquiries ,i was given to understand that key damage has happened several times before. While I cannot accuse them of providing weak and worn out keys quite deliberately.I observed many other keys also in the same worn out condition.I wondered to my self who the next poor sucker would be ! So beware the management might actually welcome you damaging their keys so that they can get it replaced at your expense.Check the keys before you take delivery. Many of the locks are very old and the keys weak and pitted. If yo don't do this you might be saddled with another 63 MYR to your bill

1st time at the YMCA in KL.
Convenient, for us, safe and clean.
A special thank you to Vicky Chong the front office supervisor who was very helpful and understanding.
The rooms are a reasonable size but are getting a little tired - paint and a clean of the grouting on the bathroom tiles. Otherwise clean and comfortable. Would like to see all hotels of this category get rid of carpets and use floor tiles. Breakfast downstairs is included - western and eastern.
Cafe/restaurant open for lunch and dinner. 10 min walk to KL Sentral. The monorail to the Golden triangle etc is even closer, left out of the gate and down the road it's on your right and is closer than the terminus at Sentral. Food everywhere but do try the hawker set up on Jalan Alor in the Golden Triangle. If you are catching a night train or bus and trying to fill in your day after you have checked out, there is a very reasonable cinema in the new mall attached to KL Sentral railway station. Will definitely stay here again.

A wonderful, affordable hostel at Central KL, close to the transport hub of KL. Has a little cafe downstairs for food and is walkable distance to KL Sentral. Staff attitude is great. 7 Eleven is close by.

I must advise everyone, this facility is most suited for those in vraiment désespéré or when there's no other choice. I stayed here for two days and 1 night since my permanent residence was having water supply shortages. Dragging our feet, we closed one side of the eye to check-in here, early January, 2012. It was already 10:00 p.m., as I'm so exhausted after work, I can't wait for the water supply to resume (back home). At RM80, we got a Deluxe room , paid using Visa debit card (Walk-in). The room was equipped with the old, torn and worn out wall paper with smelly beds that's covered with the 80's bed cover set. Even the small bulky CRT colored TV must be of the 1980s model and yes, it has air-conditioner (also 1980s). It is really like the horror movie feeling when the lift door opened at the black-out darkened hall way. We are lucky because there is a technician that still working at 10:45 p.m. to fix the broken lamps. Water pressure is good, heater is workin, toilet not that bad.
Other facilities:- There's a kiosk that sell basic necessities such as biscuits, sodas, tit bits, shampoo, soaps, American cigarettes and magazines. Also there is an ATM machine attached to the building and a new restaurant operated by the same hotel workers. If you walk about 5 minutes to Jalan Syed Putra Kiri, you shall find a fameux plat pour la Malaisie the Nasi Lemak stall. It's cooked in coconut milk, with pandan leaves and even ginger or a stalk of lemon grass. Nasi Lemak is available on almost every street corner and in almost every local-themed restaurant, served with everything from chicken to beef to cuttlefish.
If you could spare more budget, walk up the hill (about 8 minutes) to Le Chateau Siu Siu seafood restaurant, famous for the Chilli crabs and chill beer. It's packed with the expatriates. Public transportation should not be a problem in this part of the city. Walk about 150 meter, you shall find yourself a cross over bridge to monorel that will transport you in the heart of the city or to the airport. If you love shopping, get a taxi to the Mid Valley Mega Mall (it should cost you less than RM10) - about 1.3 km.
That's all.

YMCA calls itself a hostel but to me, it's better than that!
I first stayed in YMCA 7 years ago before the renovation and have stayed there everytime I go to KL for holidays. I love everything about YMCA - location, cleanliness, convenience, friendly staff, etc.
Located just opposite Sentral Station (the main transport hub), it's ultra convenient to travel around. From Sentral Station, I can basically travel all over KL using the trains. It even more convenient when I have to catch the bus to Low Cost Carrier Terminal for my AirAsia flights. It's located in Brickfields which some people say is a dodgy area but I never had any problem. Just used my common sense and avoided going out after midnight.
YMCA was renovated about 2 to 3 years ago and it now looks better. They have even installed a lift which is a blessing for those with luggages. There are basically two sides to the hotel, one facing Sentral Station and the other facing a backlane. I prefer the one facing Sentral station because the backlane can get noisy in the early mornings and at supper time due to the eateries there.
The rooms are always very clean and tidy. Some rooms come with attached hot water showers while the cheaper ones will have to use the common bathrooms. The windows can be opened so it's good for those who find air-con dehydrating. There are bigger rooms for families at $PM120 i think. I took a peek and it was quite spacious.
There is a laundry and internet pit stop on the ground floor but you have to pay for both. There is another internet place in the backlane.
It's extremely easy to get food. Just opposite are a few Chinese coffee shops and Indian restaurants with good variety and reasonable prices. If you want fast food, Sentral Station has that. For light groceries, the indian provision shops opposite will provide everything you need - water, snacks, newspapers, etc.
I don’t know what else to rave about YMCA. In the past, the sleazy reputation of Brickfields put a damper on it but now, there is really nothing to worry about. For RM$80 a night for your own private room with air-con and a hot shower, I don’t think there is anything better value for money in KL. I have stayed in Impiana, Citrus, PJ something but I have always come back to YMCA. It’s not a 5 star with a personal butler but for the budget traveler who needs to travel around, it’s simply heaven.

YMCA Kula Lalumpur located very near to KL Sentral station (Transportation Hub:- LRT, KTM Kamuter, KLIA express, Mono rail and Rapid KL bus) only 150 meters walking distance. I stayed here for a week …I really enjoyed. Rooms are not so big but very neat and clean. Complimentary breakfast available.

Stayed here 2 years ago and was ok so decided to bring the family this time. Bad move. This time was awful. The smell of the rooms and poor hygiene was gross. One star for location. Reading their annual report it appears the building is to be shortly replaced. So I gather they have decided to let it run down. The quicker that happens the better before their good brand is trashed.

We stayed at the YMCA for about 3-4 days while in KL. The location is good due to proximity to KL Sentral station, LRT and buses. There are multiple food options around: we found at least 3-4 Indian Restaurant in the range of 100 mtrs. The rooms are clean and frugal and serve the purpose of a good location. The receptionist was warm and friendly. Definitely worth the price you are paying. The advantage of being able to check in luggage right at KL Sentral Station if you are travelling by Malaysian Airlines and taking the KLIA MRT made the experience happier of staying very near to the KL Sentral Station.

This is a rather basic hostel. No frills whatsoever. But I was told that they were going to upgrade the place soon. They were doing some maintenance work when we were there. But it is pretty safe for a woman if you are staying alone. It's value for money.Lots of food around this vicinity. But food served in the cafeteria is in small portions. Towels were clean. But I feel that they could upgrade a bit and charge a bit higher. Dont want YMCA to lose its appeal to the young travellers in a shoe string budget.

Dear Ally,
Noted your comments, appreciate it.
A good feedback, will add in more hangers immediately.
Thank you very much
Vincent Foo
I am not the staff but based on my experience, I can tell you that:
(1) they don't provide airport transfers, the kids should be able to reach this place directly from airport using KLIA Express train, arrive in KL Sentral and then walk over to YMCA.
(2) YMCA has three-pax room (with three beds). You can check their official website and book directly or via Agoda etc.
Have fun.
