I would probably want somewhere more central if I went back in winter again. However it was by the water and in summer it looked like it would be quite a nice area. Lots of beach style cafes etc. Quite interesting for Japan to see American surf culture with a Japanese twist. I would have given a 4 if I had visited in summer I think.
The hotel itself was nice. Complimentary beer on arrival, Japanese and french restaurant onsite (we didn't eat there though) and the room was nice and clean. Decor a bit old-style and grand for my liking but certainly nice and comfortable. The bathroom was big and roomy and better than most. Even had a shower and a bath, which is nice because I got sick of showering in small baths. Even had free wifi in the room! View over the beach was also nice. Staff friendly and spoke english well.
I would certainly consider staying in summer (especially if you stayed 2 or more nights) but not winter.
I wish we had obtained the name of the woman at the reception desk, as she provided exceptional service! When she found out that our daughter is a vegan vegetarian, she took considerable effort to understand her dietary preferences, and to recommend what she could eat and in which restaurant. We don't speak Japanese at all, and she was a god send. With a typhoon approaching, she also kept us updated on the latest weather forecasts.
My wife and I tried a full Japanese breakfast, and did not quite know what sauce went with what dish. The person who served us helped us beautifully with signs and gestures (as neither spoke a language the other could understand). When he saw that my wife and I were enjoying the green tea, he brought out other variations of tea for us to try and introduce us to their names as well (Hojicha, Sencha). Given that this was our first full day in Japan on this trip, the hospitality that the hotel staff showed us was much appreciated.
Although we had planned to stay two nights, with the approaching typhoon, we decided to check out after one night and the Hotel staff, while disappointed, were exemplary is helping us get on our way further inland.
I realize that this Hotel is expensive for a 3+ star Hotel, but given the location (directly across Kamakura beach) and the staff, I heartily recommend this Hotel.
This was our first time staying in Kamakura - we have visited before but never stayed overnight - and whilst there's not a lot of choice in terms of hotel accommodation, we were certainly happy with our decision.
We wanted to take time to explore this wonderful town, and ride the Enoden train as much as we could. We also wanted to unwind, and staying at Kamakura Park Hotel gave us plenty of opportunity to do all of these things.
You have to walk through the back streets to get to the nearest train station, Hase, about 10 minutes away. We really like exploring the back streets of any town or city and staying at this hotel certainly gave us plenty to discover; we took a different route every day.
And the staff were amazing, especially Haruna Ueki. She certainly made our stay very special. Lucky for us, she has spent time living in our hometown, so she understood us very quickly and was able to give us lots of tips about coffee, eating and what to see.
One tip though, whilst having a room with a view was certainly wonderful, we couldn't leave our window open all night as the traffic noise was too constant. It's a road that everyone uses to go up and down the coast, so the traffic never stops. However, closing the window certainly blocked out nearly all of the noise.
The positives are that the rooms are quite big and the staff have excellent English. The location is a 10 minute walk from the local train station, but not bad. I didn't try the restaurant, but there are some nice beach restaurants only about 6 minutes walk away.
The negative is that it feels like an average tourist hotel that you could find in any part of the world. It doesn't take advantage of it's sea front location, in my view.
The lay out of reception, restaurants, lobby and corridors are beautiful.
We stayed 2 nights and chose a "Japanese style" room: Our room (#313) and bathroom were large. Decoration was genuine and the futon experience memorable.
Both restaurants (Kora for the Japanese food and Pergola for the werstern food) were excellent.
The hotel is not cheap, but it is worth the experience, under Mia-san kind but very effective leadership.
The hotel is a bit remote from the Kamakura train station (10-15 min by cab).
<Pros>
- I had a reservation for cheap price under 20,000 yen without foods.
- The room’s view slightly ocean view.
<Cons>
- Baby bed needs additional fee.
