Restaurants and major shopping centers nearby.
The hotel provides luggage storage before check-in. The staff even put our luggage in our room. Luggage storage service is also provided after check-out.
Staff are nice.
Room was clean with all the basic amenities. Room size was okay for us (as expected so no complaints).
Breakfast is in the restaurant that adjoins the hotel. We're across from the train station, near a large shopping mall with a huge electronics store. The hotel is a short walk from the Ofuna Kannon, the mercy Buddha. You can see the buddha from the rooms, but take the walk and immerse yourself in the culture it represents.
Alongside the train station is a shopping mall with restaurants on the 7th floor and a take out food mart on the second floor. The take out mart swarms with locals and offers a wide variety of food at reasonable prices (the dollar is strong now. worth about 115 yen).
Ofuna is at the terminus of the Narita express train, a short monorail ride from Enoshima with its beaches and temples, a 90 minute train ride to Tokyo, a 30 minute train ride to the Shinkansen bullet train that takes you to Kyoto and Osaka.
Smallish room by western standards, but super clean, comfortable bed, desk, flatscreen TV, bath with all the essentials, slippers, pajamas, pants press, free tea service and computers in the lobby, plus laundry machines at a minimal charge if you need to do a load of wash. You can catch the Narita Express direct to the airport, so it's a great option for avoiding Tokyo hotel prices especially on your departing nights.
We were there for 4 days. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants in the neighbourhood. A 7-11 directly downstairs and another convenience store across the street for convenience. Also, the hotel was only 5 minutes walking from the local train station.
As for our rooms, again, they are tiny by North American standards. The hotel is well maintained and everything worked. Most importantly, as my son has various allergies, the rooms and lobby were very clean and well maintained by the staff. They also provide a nice small selection of tea bags in the lobby. Again, for all the high prices we paid for hotels in Japan this past summer, the Sotetsu Fresa stands out as great value.
Bed: it was a bit hard, and one side of the double bed touches the wall.
Breakfast: you get a voucher to the nearby café that will give you one out of 6 choices. Not stellar, not a buffer, but it still got us fed.
AC: it was a bit slow to start, but worked and as always, the controls in the room are in Japanese
Room: with two people, you'll fit but you'll bump into one another. It's a bit tight.
Noise: quiet
Location: Great base to go explore the Kamakura area, very close to train station
Internet: Wired internet in the room (no wireless).
English: staff spoke basic english and was able to help us
As you can see, the room was tiny, took planning with my husband to move around, plus there's a lot of other misc stuff in the way: pants press, air cleaner, luggage rack. Check out how efficient the hot water kettle is - it's tucked into the end of the desk. Watch out for the chair, though - its rolling base sticks out and it's a constant tripping hazard.
The continental breakfast consisted of a cup of coffee and 1 of 6 choices of basically white bread and something - the heated ham & cheese one was marginally the best, but really these are more of a snack. So if you expect an actual breakfast of any sort, you won't find it here.
Still, at approx. $110/night, it's a bargain. Clean and quiet. I think we started to learn here that sometimes it's best to request two twin beds rather than a double - the rooms are bigger to accommodate them. I can't say for sure if that's the case in this hotel, but it's worth pursuing.
Possible cons-you won't like this place if you're looking for a ryokan type of experience, this is far from it. The rooms are geared towards individual business travelers and their size is representative of this. The rooms are well equipped but very small and there are no other facilities to note other than free slow internet, a microwave, an English newspaper, some vending machines and tea in the lobby.
The worst part of our stay was a stench in the bathroom what could not readily be explained, my thorough investigation lead me to believe that there is stagnant water somewhere...some of the nooks and crannies in the room needed dusting/vacuuming/cleaning.
"As the location is in a busy neighbourhood with a lot of foot and car traffic, choose a room on a higher floor to avoid the street noise."Read full review
