The hotel location is great along the Recife coastline. It is also within reasonable distance of the airport. We had to change rooms because of a defective a/c unit, but when we got a recently renovated room it was a great improvement. The kitchenette in one of our rooms was very practical for "family" use".The breakfast served was good, the pool area acceptable and the price we got was within the service and ammenities offered. We stayed at this hotel for the first three nights of our two week vacation in that general area of Brazil, and we decided to use the hotel again for the last night in Brazil because of the proximity of the airport and an acceptable level of service.
The hotel itself has been very neglected. It took us five rooms before we found an acceptable one (main door to room would not lock; bathroom door would not close fully; due to wind coming from sea, the poor seals on sliding door made a very loud howling sound; air conditioner did not work).
On top of that, we did not get the rate advertised online at lastminute.com. Lastminute.com quoted the rate in our currency (USD). The hotel, of course, charges in Brazilian Reals; however, the exchange rate they provided was so bad, that the room ended up costing much more.
I would not recommend this hotel.
Go check the pics on that site and then compare with the pics I have posted, it is sarcastic!
Secondly, trust the reviews and don't even consider staying at this property. Eventhough it might not sound that expensive during off-season, it is not worth any money. The hotel is far away from a 4-star property, not necessarily a rip-off but definitely it is a dump!
Anyway anything else on the beach of Recife is not any better either...
The rooms are very spartan and are equal to any 35 dollar roadside motel in the U.S.
The bathroom very basic and the bath itself very aged; surprisingly the shower had very good pressure and flow and the cold/hot water functioned perfectly. The balcony had a good view.
Hallways on the floors look terrible, like in a hospital from the 50ies. There are even holes in the ceiling.
The restaurant is not worth mentioning, I never had a worse hotel breakfast. The lobby and common area is kind of deserted, this hotel had its time quite a while ago. It was probably built as event hotel.
The pool and relax area outside is also run down. The water in the pool isnt appealing and the shower full of mold. There is basically no real beach, dirty and deserted. The same goes for sauna and fitness center, its all ran down and outdated.
Now just check my pictures :)
Customer service could certainly improve... I made a reservation through goldentulip.com but the hostess could not find it in the computer. At the end, he gave me a curious advice: "You should not trust these websites... be sure you always call the front desk before going to the hotel. You are lucky that we still have rooms, otherwise you'd not have a place to stay"
The gate leading to the beach was manned 24hours and security very friendly. Early morning the beach is quiet and the whole stretch is cleaned regularly. At low tide, there are natural pools right in front of the hotel. The pool is clean and the gym offers fitness classes in the morning.
Breakfast included juices, fruit, cereals, yoghurt, lots of different cakes and pastries, cheese, cold meats, and a hot selection of regional food such as couscous, calabresa, yam, sausage, scrambled egg. The coffee was fresh and different teas were provided.
At least 2 of the reception staff spoke English, which is a great find in a city where very little English is spoken.
I decided to stay another day and there were no hassles. I paid the same discounted price I had booked with. My room had been booked for some renovation on my original day of departure, but they obviously delayed this.
The hotel is on a busy street with buses passing often, so access to anywhere in the city is easy. There is a pharmacy across the street, supermarkets close by and several restaurants within walking distance. Shopping Guararapes, the nearest mall is a few minutes away by bus.
But...when we entered our room, we were less than thrilled. For starters, the toilet did not flush. We probably could have lived with that for a while, but when we found small white worms in the bed, it was too much for us. We were happy that they did not have any other rooms, because we just wanted to leave. The service at the front desk was very polite again, and they returned our money without any questions.
I have to say that the view from the fifth floor towards the Ocean was very nice. The white beach and the blue water as well as the nice pool looked very good, but it was just too much to have to share your bed with worms. A lot has to change that we would even consider staying at this hotel again. We packed our bags and headed out to a nice clean hotel at Boa Viagem.
The building itself is amazing and it's quite sad and disrespectful to let it end like this. The garden/pool area looked beautiful, but dirty and nobody around it. We used the elevator to the 8th floor and were shocked once again, it must be forbidden to have it still in use. It's so dangerous. We stayed about 5minutes in the room and decided to change the hotel, no matter how much it costs. In a corner we found the used, still wet towels of the guests before and in the cupboard was trash and other disgusting stuff. Smelly, dirty, old and not even the bed was with propper sheets.
It's a pity what they do to this place!
I made a check-in late in the evening after the match, with 6am flight to catch next morning. No hot food was available by the time of my arrival neither in the hotel, nor in its vicinity (the property is in the middle of distressed quarter, next to a number of delapidated buildings), so I had to resort to sandwich smoothed with a couple of beers.
The hotel was probably at his peak at hippies time, and on decline since then. Staff speaks little or no English, the room looks like exhibition sample from 60s or 70s.
To add insult to injury, the ceiling by the room door started leaking 30 min before my (very early) wake up call, and the staff was all but disinterested about it, still probably weighing their options 20 minutes later when I was down fully packed and ready to go to airport.
Recife's glamour has been fading for decades now, and, unfortunately, efforts to revitalize it through hosting WC games were in vain.
"Ask for a higher room with view to the ocean. Its breath taking when you wake up in the morning."Read full review
