The Aberdare Country Club, only a three-hour drive northeast from Nairobi, is nestled on a slope of Mweiga Hill in the Aberdare Highlands, part of the Great Rift Valley. This captivating site was selected by an English couple who had decided to settle in the land of their choosing - Kenya. It all happened many years ago; their children grew up there, but then moved on to different places. After almost half a century, their home, "The Steep", was sold and re-named "The Aberdare Country Club". Even though the property was developed beyond the imaginings of the original owners, they would be pleased with how carefully it has been nurtured and the grandeur it has maintained. This is highlighted in Monty Brown's book, "Haven Under the Hill" which says: "Today, despite the fast-changing tempo of the outside world, the old home still retains that comfortable, solid feeling based on traditions from a time when life proceeded at a far more leisurely and gentle pace". The Club's 1,300 acre wildlife sanctuary is teeming with eland, impalas, zebras, giraffes and the more reclusive leopards. It is a haven of unhurried charm set in a garden bursting with a profusion of colour, and with peacocks living within the lush green lawns. Walking through this unspoiled terrain is paradise. Play a round of golf, watched by a family of warthog, or fish for trout, play tennis or just relax by the pool within the beautiful gardens. From here you can see the sunset with the stunning Aberdare Mountains as a backdrop.

Bland food, no ala Carte to cater for special needs, food is not child friendly disinterested service from the staff, desert was super disappointing, and on top of that a cover charge to access the restaurant, scenic view and you can espy a few animals as you drive in. Truthfully, this place operating way below its potential. Everything could be better. The reception at the entrance is almost unfriendly, the staff are totally disinterested and segregating in their attitude, the food is hopelessly tasteless. Small variety of very badly prepared options. The only saving grace is the environment which is spectacular.

Aberdare National Park is underrated (in our opinion). It is harder to spot game (although it is there; we saw 4 of the Big 5) because it is hilly (rising to almost 13,000 feet) and heavily forested. But it well worth a visit. The Aberdare Country Club was built by the British back when they ruled most of the world. It still has the ambiance of an exclusive club. And we were treated like royalty because we were the only overnight guests at the Club. The room was clean and comfortable, the food excellent and the staff wonderful. It was great sitting by the fire in the sitting room (it gets chilly at that altitude) and finding hot water bottles in our beds when we returned to the room. An additional benefit is the private conservancy that surrounds the Club where you can see Zebra and Reticulated Giraffes (among other animals) while either walking (with guide) or in your safari car.

The food was good especially they took care of special diet requirements with great passion and wowed us with wonderful dishes. Thank you Chef George and team, that was outstanding. The staff are really very friendly. Great place to relax n also visit Aberdare parks.

We brought our clients to Aberdare Country Club for 2 days and stayed there ourselves as well. Solomon works at the main office and is amazing as always. The birds, landscaping, animals are fantastic. They were a bit lax with COVID protocol. Staff did not always wear masks or if they did might not have been on correctly, manager was not wearing one the day we left. Temperatures were not taken and hand washing not enforced. Guests wearing masks was not enforced. Because of a lack of clients the staff appeared to have been cut back and the last breakfast we ate we literally had to go find someone to find the kitchen staff to serve us. We know its hard with the lock downs and lack of clients - but we all still need to do our best for those that are there.

Response from Caleb Jones, General Manager at Aberdare Country Club
Responded 16 Apr 2021
Dear letmeshine4him Thank you for taking the time to provide valuable feedback and for highlighting “Solomon’s” service, it means a lot to him and all of us. You are quite correct in all your comments with respect to a complacency in COVID-19 protocols , of which I too am guilty, and I can assure you, that even though with limited staff and guests we have once again introduced strict protocols for all staff so that we set the example across the board. All our guests are provided with masks and we insist on compliance for the safety of everyone. My sincerest apologies for a lax approach and I assure you we value each and every guest and will endeavor to improve even through these difficult times. Kind Regards Aberdare Country Club

Aberdare Country Club is a award winning hotel. It has a consevrancy where people could visit, hiking, see animals, horse riding, walking safari, bird watching, and playing golf. The food is always good and delicious. It's very cold in the evening because of the altitute. We love their room decoration because you could feel the histroy of the hotel. We have send many groups to Aberdare Country Club, they always treat our clients as their family. We would recommend to hotel to anyone!
