This place is amazing! We had such a nice stay at the resort. The place with jungle and river view, the super nice room (with hot!!! shower), the amazing staff, the food —> Everything is perfect. It really made us feel zo zen and relaxed whilst enjoying Sabah’s nature. We would say it’s a must go when in Borneo. We are a couple, but we could also imagine it is a very cool place for nature/adventure loving kids. Dear Gert, Jason and team - thanks for the lovely stay and making us feel at home far away from home. Wish you all the best!
My partner and I loved our stay at the Last Frontier. Jason and the team were so welcoming and helpful. We found the room, bathroom and bed really comfortable. The location at the top of the stairs provides awesome views, and you are surrounded by rainforest, so you get to hear the sounds of it all the time. The real highlight for us though was the food, Jason is a chef and he does not disappoint, he made us the best meals we have had in Borneo, so thank you Jason for that. There is a reason this place has such great reviews, if you are looking to visit the Kinabatangan River we highly recommend you stay here!
Look no further. This is a wonderful place to stay. Jason, Gert and the team looked after us so well and ensured we had a great experience. Rooms are comfortable and clean. The environment is so peaceful after living in KL. Food is plentiful, freshly cooked and very tasty. Rodel was an excellent guide and shared his knowledge of nature, animals and birds with us. We were so lucky to see elephants. This is not guaranteed. I miss The Last Frontier and the conversations we shared.
From booking until being dropped off back to Sandakan Jason and Gert were the perfect hosts! The booking process was very easy and we requested a pick up from Sandakan. Jason picked us up and was a mine of information on tourism in Sabah and Malaysia on the whole, he gave us some great tips for the rest of our time in Sabah. The lodge is fabulous in terms of location and facilities. The food was absolutely delicious, we loved it all but my daughters particularly loved the personalised breakfast pancakes! The resort guides were also amazing, we saw many types of birds and monkeys, and a wild orangutan mother with baby and child!! The stay here was the highlight of our trip, no question!
Jason, Gert and the team really have created the ultimate Borneo rainforest experience. The setting is stunning: the lodge is perched amongst the canopy of the beautiful rainforest, with the incredible sights and sounds all around you. Our kids loved exploring and the 500+ steps were no problem, just part of the adventure. Even my 70 year old mother managed the steps, thanks to the help and support of Jason. The boat trips and hike were fantastic, so many proboscis monkeys, kingfishers and butterflies of every colour. The food is a real highlight, every meal was so tasty and our kids ate everything on their plate. The rooms are also lovely; it's an amazing achievement what Gert and Jason have built there. We are full of gratitude to them both and all the Last Frontier team for the way they looked after both our kids and my elderly parents during our stay with them. Terima Kasih! …
We went as a family, 4 of us . From the moment we met Gert at our pick up point at The English Tea House, we knew we were in for a good time. Mr Gert was punctual, friendly and gave us a brief outline of what was to be expected when we arrived at the boutique resort. Our stay there with our 20+ year old kids was truly amazing . Jason, Gerts business partner, a trained chef , made all the meals. The menu is set and delicious. We wished we had asked for more pancakes. Rodel their in house guide tooks us on all our river cruises and jungle tracking. He was obliging, knowledgeable and friendly. All in all, to summarise, once you get there , you need not worry about anything. It's all done at a very warm and personal level. We can't thank ALL of them enough for their warm hospitality. We will never forget this trip and shall return .…
Our stay in The Last Frontier Resort was a perfect introduction into Sabah's wildlife. In the resort, I felt both adventurous and safe, which is of great importance when traveling with kids. Thank you so much for everything, Gert, Jason and entire team, thanks to you our vacation was full of amazing experiences and wonderful memories! Seeing orangutans in the wild was one of them.
Stop searching now and book with these guys. This is not just a hotel or resort – it is your second home in the Bornean jungle. We are a family with three young children from the US and we recently had the sincere pleasure of staying with Gert, Jason, and their team. I could go on for pages about how much we enjoyed our experience but here are the highlights: • Smooth, Reassuring Logistics: Gert and Jason are amazing people who managed the execution of our stay smoothly and with warm, attentive service. Great communications prior to our stay and seamless airport transfer during which they made multiple stops to help us find mosquito repellent (thanks for nothing TSA). Super competent and knowledgeable from start to finish, which is crucial when you’re trying to plan a high-stakes bucket list adventure. • Treated Us Like Family: We felt so comfortable during our stay. It’s a rustic environment but in a charming way (the view is incredible and worth every step up the “stairway to heaven”). We spent two weeks in Malaysia and stayed at some 5 star places but I think this may have been the most relaxed I felt during our time in the country. Two of our children celebrated birthdays while at the resort and Gert and Jason went above and beyond to ensure that they had an unforgettable experience. They made special breakfasts and even helped us get cakes so each of them could have a birthday cake on their special day. This kind of service is hard to find at even the most expensive resorts! • Awesome Tours: The jungle and animals are the main event and our guide killed it. I must note that we saw other boats from nearby resorts that were absolutely packed with people but since this is a smaller, more intimate operation we didn’t have to deal with that. Our guide was knowledgeable, patient and managed to help us witness some amazing things. Plus, the whole coordination of the tours was very chill and accommodating. We simply walked down to the boat in the morning and evenings, hopped on and enjoyed amazing scenery. • Finally, some recommendations and pro tips: • Take the time to chat with Gert, Jason, and their team. I really enjoyed getting a peak into their world and their perspectives. • There are a lot of stairs up to the amazing view. This will be much easier if you just pack the essentials and store the bulk of your luggage at the base, which is locked and very secure (no worries there; they’ll treat your possessions like their own). But believe me, it’s worth the workout and if my 7-year-old can do it so can you. People from other resorts climbed the stairs and visited while we were there just to see the view. • Pay with the Wise money transfer app if you can to avoid carrying a bunch of cash. Gert and help you out with this; we used it for the first time there and it was a breeze. • Definitely take a morning river cruise. • Bring insect repellant, ideally with DEET. The bugs aren’t bad but why bother if you can repel them? • No worries about water; they have their own natural spring on the property. Drinking water is fine – I had gallons and had no problems, even with my soft American stomach. Bottom Line: Amazing value with wonderful, caring people. Family and kid friendly! You’ll have a great, unforgettable experience.…
Absolutely fabulous stay. The accommodation is set high in the hills which means there are a lot of stairs to walk up to get there but it is so worth it. They regularly get orangutans on their lawn and monkeys, birds and butterflies are all around. The rooms are beautifully decorated and beds very comfortable. The food can’t be faulted. It’d the best food I’ve had in Sabah. Our guide, Roden found us three orangutans within five minutes of our first river trip. It really is a lovely place to stay for adults and children and the staff are so friendly and helpful to guests (as well as animals)
My husband and I had a really nice time in the Last Frontier. The food Jason prepares is exquisite and the boat cruises are really fun. The rooms are minimalist, but very comfortable and the hotel is certainly right in the jungle. You walk up around 600 steps to get to the hotel, which as you can see is nestled on a steep hill. There is limited space available because of this but for a 2N3D stay it was good value for money and we recommend it.
