The Last Frontier Resort is a unique resort in the Kinabatangan area. As the first and only, it's located on top of a 100 meter high hill with a beautiful view over the forest sanctuary and the Kinabatangan River. Our packages include accommodation, 3 meals a day and an evening river cruise. Optional we can provide jungle trekking, night river cruises and night walks in the jungle.
Our family thoroughly enjoyed the 2D2N package at the Last Frontier in Bilit. It is such a special place, with just 4 bedrooms, set up high on a hill overlooking the Kintabagan river. We were able to watch a family of 3 orangutans in trees just beside the steps leading up to the lodge, and saw hornbills, monitor lizard and squirrels from the the eating area. We enjoyed 2 boat rides with Ryan as part of our trip and saw different types of monkeys including proboscis, countless birds including hornbills and a crocodile. We also enjoyed a guided walk along the ridge with far reaching views over the palm oil plantations which are encroaching on the land all around this area. We really enjoyed talking to our hosts Gert and Jason about Sabah and found Jason's food to be very tasty, and some of the best of our trip - we particularly loved his beef curry and breakfast pancakes. We left the bulk of our luggage in lockers at the bottom to make it easier to walk up the steps - we only ended up walking up 3 times during the trip and found this to be part of the experience! A torch was helpful for walking up at dusk after the boat trip. Rooms were simple, but comfortable with hot showers. Highly recommended!…

We loved this place! Everything about our stay was perfect, starting off with the pick-up during which we got so much information and tips for the rest of our trip in Malaysia. The hosts are so nice and ready to help with anything. The location was even more beautiful than expected and we could’ve just sat by our room or in the eating area for hours being entertained by the amazing views and wildlife. The highlight of our stay were the river cruises, we saw so much wildlife on the first day alone and Ryan was an amazing spotter. Even the moments we didn’t see any wildlife were so memorable because of the amazing views of the rainforest. Finally, in addition to kind staff, unique views and lots of wildlife the food here was delicious. They also have very nice vegetarian dishes which was highly appreciated. Would definitely come here again and I recommend this place to everyone!…

Wow! What an amazing place. We visited here as a family of 5 for a 3D/2N stay. This was part of a little tour of Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, and while we loved everywhere we went, we all agreed this place was the best and most memorable - and not just because of all the steps! Starting with the steps actually, they’re not that bad! Does require a little fitness. I was too lazy to sort my stuff out and only take the minimal to the top so went up with my backpack and it was ok. Easier without of course. You only have to do the climb 3 or 4 times and it was nice to keep the exercise up. We found the steps easiest to do bare foot. The rooms were lovely, fairly simple but comfortable and a really nice feel. The food was fabulous. There is something liberating about just being made food without having to choose from a menu, of course made so much easier when the food is as good as it was here. All the meals were great, especially the nasi goreng which I need to try and make at home! The daily boat trips were of course the highlight and Ryan was fab at spotting the wildlife from a great distance! We were fortunate and saw all of the coveted animals - orangutans, Pygmy elephant, large crocodile, tons of proboscis and other monkeys, hornbills etc. We saw 2 orangutans in the trees outside the lodge one morning when we were having breakfast which was a special treat. The jungle trek was fun (and rather sweaty!). Gert and Jason were lovely welcoming hosts, thank you for the extra touch’s for my sons birthday. He still has Peanut as his screensaver and talks of him daily - I hope he is ok! There are quite a few other lodges on the river offering similar stays but this place surely has to be the best. It’s small so you really do get the personal touch. Highly recommended.…

I cannot rate these guys highly enough, just beautiful people inside and out and doing wonders for the local area and our understanding of wildlife and the fragility of the environment. The whole team bend over backwards to help and nothing is too much trouble, they provide a caring, personal and really special stay in the jungle. The boat trips were fantastic and we were able to see wild orangutans, monkeys, elephants and crocodiles. Went for a hike and experienced great food too. The rooms are clean and comfortable and ponchos are available for anyone who needs them. Thank you to the Last Frontier for doing what you do, we loved our stay.

An amazing 3-day stay where we relaxed and at the same time took it all in. Jason and his staff did all possible in a discrete way to provide the best experience and give us a good understanding of the nature and living. The full family (mum, dad and two girls on 18 and 21) all found the stay so uplifting and unique. We were a small team of guests (10) who had a great time together yet at the same time, we also had time on our own. We would encourage anyone to sign up for a stay and you might be as lucky as we were to even see elefants around the nearby willage. Jason searched the area for us and suddenly they were there.

The four of us just had two nights and two days at the Last Frontier boutique resort and were super impressed by both the quality of personalised service and the high level of passion that Gert and Jason put into the venture. The forest and wildlife surrounds the accommodation, and it felt like we were living in the canopy, which was pretty cool. The Kinabatangen River cruises were excellent, and we had a couple of the best wildlife experiences of our whole Borneo trip up one of the tributaries there. It's not the easiest lodge to access, but that is what makes it unique and less commercial than some of the other places in the area.

Firstly Wow. We stayed here for our honeymoon for 2 nights 3 days. The thoughtfulness and effort that the staff put into making our stay exceptional was outstanding from before we had even arrived. Jason kindly arranged transport for us from our stopgap hotel nearby as he was worried about us not being able to get to the hotel. He rang the hotel we were staying at and organised a late check out and taxi for us. We was greeted with drinks, and Ryan and the other lovely two gentlemen kindly put rose petals all down the steps to our room with a rose and chocolates! And let us check in early. The room was immaculate and the soap and shampoo smell amazing and are environmentally friendly. With a great shower and bathroom. We went on two boat trips at dusk with Ryan where we saw crocodiles, lots of monkeys including proboscis and an orangutang, we also saw a snake and a lizard. Ryan was amazing at spotting all the wildlife, we don’t know how he has such good eyes to spot some of the things that were hidden. Excellent and informative guide throughout the trip. We also went on a local walk with a beautiful view of the river. The food throughout this trip was exceptional. Jason and the staff pay attention to detail and really care about making everything perfect for you. They accommodated for my greedy husband and provided him with twice as much! This is the best all inclusive food we have ever had and we take our hats off to Jason and the team. We had a mix of western and Asian food. We would visit here just for the food let alone it’s remarkable location and if this was a restaurant at home, it would be by far our favourite. Best pancakes we’ve ever had!! The staff are an absolute credit to the resort and you should all be extremely proud of yourself for the service you provide. We would recommend staying here so much, we loved it thankyou so so much for making our honeymoon so special. I could go on forever about how much of a good time we had.. AMAZING!!!…

This place is really amazing. We searched a lot to choose the right package for Kinabatangan River and this was really the best choice. Such friendly and helpful staff, we felt so welcome. There are only a few rooms, no big tourism and that's why you feel so comfortable here. (Don't be put off by the stairs, they are easy to climb). Every dish was delicious (even vegetarian at my special request) and the banana pancakes with caramel sauce? OMG the best pancakes we've ever had! The river cruises were very relaxing and we saw all the animals (monkeys, crocodiles, hornbills, elephants). We even had an orangutan outside our room visible from our window! We had an unforgettable experience here. Thank you very much Gert and the team, you are doing an excellent job.

We had a wonderful stay at the last frontier. The hosts Gurt and Jason were so friendly and knowledgable, enabling us to fully enjoy our time in Borneo. The rooms were spacious and comfy and we all slept well. Every meal was delicious and they also catered for dietary requirements. Our trips on the river and walking with guide Rodel were excellent. He was able to spot so many things along the river and really went out of his way to find a crocodile. Even when we weren’t “on safari” he continued to look out for orangutans - we were so lucky to watch an adolescent in the trees right where we were staying. They care about conservation and wildlife as well as respecting the local life. If we are ever lucky enough to return to Borneo, this would be top of our places to return to.…

My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Last Frontier. Every aspect of the stay far exceeded any expectations we had. Right from the initial contact with Gert and Jason (N.B. You're better off booking direct with them via their website), we could tell they are fantastic hosts, and chatting to them in the car to the rest was a brilliant introduction to life in and around the Kinabatangan River, and in Sabah generally, and by the end you feel very relaxed with them, like old friends. The quality of the rooms is beyond belief in such a remote and isolated place. Everything was spotlessly clean and of very high quality. Bed was comfy. Shower was warm (not that I wanted it warm) and had very good pressure. The food was great. The team are happy to adapt to dietary requirements and every meal we had was delicious and satisfying after a day out on the water or hiking through the jungle. Rodel, the guide we had was great. Friendly and great at spotting interesting wildlife with a great knowledge of the wildlife along the Kinabatangan River. Thanks to his expert eyes we spotted so much, including several species of hornbills, Crocodiles, Proboscis monkeys and a 10 strong heard of Pygmy elephants that included 2 babies. Obviously one can't go out expecting to spot anything, they're wild animals after all and rarely stick to a timetable, but with Rodel you stand the best possible chance. He didn't quit when we were back at the resort either, as he came running to get us when he spotted a juvenile orang utan climbing up the hill, high in the trees. In the end we were lucky enough to have two sightings; the second being as we ate breakfast the next day (though same caviat as above applies). But I would highly recommend the last frontier resort to anyone visiting sabah with an interest in wildlife. They really are amazing and clearly genuinely care about it, or they wouldn't do what they do. It's a great place and I hope to return again one day. …
