My husband and I had a really nice time in the Last Frontier. The food Jason prepares is exquisite and the boat cruises are really fun. The rooms are minimalist, but very comfortable and the hotel is certainly right in the jungle. You walk up around 600 steps to get to the hotel, which as you can see is nestled on a steep hill. There is limited space available because of this but for a 2N3D stay it was good value for money and we recommend it.
Our stay at The Last Frontier was simply amazing. Unique location, wonderful hosts, amazing food and very clean and comfortable rooms. Jason and Gert and their crew really go the extra mile to make your stay unforgettable. I highly recommend a stay here.
Really enjoyed my one night here! I didn't have time for two nights but they managed to tailor a custom trip so i could squeeze in the jungle hike as well as an evening and morning river cruises and transfer to reach Sepilok in time for the next leg of my trip! The rooms were super clean, great water pressure in the shower (which was amazing after spending 5 days on Mabul Island). Jason who has built and runs the place was super attentive to all the guests, he served and I think cooked the meals himself (which were fantastic) and gave 5 star restaurant service in the resort restaurant, he is a true conservationist and hosted the jungle tour himself, explaining alot about the history and background of the deforestation happening around the area as well as pointing out and…
A great place to visit. We ended up here through a river junkie booking and was very pleased with it. Jason and Gert were excellent attentive hosts with lots of knowledge and passion of the surrounding rainforest and area. They also were wonderful at helping us book a bus down to semporna instead of our return transfer to Sandakan and waited with us until it arrived. The food was spectacular! The steps are long but adds to the adventure and experience. The boat for the river cruises did keep breaking down but the guide fixed it pretty quick. Didn't spot any elephants or orangutans on this trip, bit that's nature I guess. Plenty of proboscis and other wildlife. A wonderful experience, would recommend to everyone.
Our first venture after the lifting of the ban on travel within Malaysia and a good choice! The Last Frontier was comfortable and Gert was the ideal host. The food was the best we had during our tour of Sabah. Our guide took us on the river cruises where we saw a herd of Pygmy elephants and many proboscis and silver-lipped monkeys. A lovely eco- friendly and welcoming resort set high in the rainforest with a variety of wildlife. I would certainly recommend it to anyone wishing to discover the area.
Let's get the steps out of the way first - you do need to be relatively fit but its not that bad. I have COPD and apart from having to rest a couple of times (to admire the view) it wouldn't put me off returning. We did a 3N4D package which was perfect as we never felt rushed. The package included 3 afternoon river trips and a couple of hilltop walks. We opted to forego one of the walks for an early morning river trip (well worth it) and we squeezed in a visit to the Gomantong Caves (about 30-minutes from the resort). We saw lots of wildlife (heard lots more) on the river trips but taking photos of Orangutangs from the boat proved quite difficult. The highlight for us was seeing the Pygmy Elephants on our last afternoon. Our guide Rodel was a star! I should also mention that the…
Three of us stayed here and it was great. The tour guide was amazing and found us an elephant. The Food is delicious. We saw an orangutan at the site with her baby. We were very happy that we stayed here instead of a large resort.
Probably not for everyone... the stairs are uneven and you may go up and down three or four times a day (to get onto the river to look for wildlife) BUT worth every step. You are immersed in the jungle. Rooms are simple but comfortable. And because the Resort is on a ridge, mosquitos etc were not a problem. Jason and the staff team were great. They bother to remember everyone's name and somehow manage to meet all dietary requirements (gluten free pancakes for example!) We booked direct - easy to get email responses and useful information to prepare.
First things first. The steps are really not that bad. I had a foot injury and I managed just fine. As there are only 4 rooms it really does feel boutique and Jason and his team make you feel like one of the family. He is so helpful and as for the food. Just wow! It was better than anywhere I ate in Borneo including the 5. Star hotels. If you like pancakes these are the best you will ever eat. Thank you Jason for a fabulous stay
We booked 3d2n package and wish we'd stay longer. The trip exceeded our expectations in every way. The place and the rooms are beautiful, well furnished and sealed off so no jungle creatures could come in. The food was excellent and the staff went extra length to cater for our every need (they considered all guests' dietary needs like vegan or no fish). Gert and his staff know every guest by name and you can really get personalized experience. The owners can also tell you many interesting facts about Borneo and the animals themselves. During the tours we saw elephants, crocodilles, proboscis monkeys, wild boars etc.etc. it was definitely the highlight of our vacation, we would choose this place again and we hope we can come back some day :) thank you!!!
