The four of us just had two nights and two days at the Last Frontier boutique resort and were super impressed by both the quality of personalised service and the high level of passion that Gert and Jason put into the venture. The forest and wildlife surrounds the accommodation, and it felt like we were living in the canopy, which was pretty cool. The Kinabatangen River cruises were excellent, and we had a couple of the best wildlife experiences of our whole Borneo trip up one of the tributaries there. It's not the easiest lodge to access, but that is what makes it unique and less commercial than some of the other places in the area.

Firstly Wow. We stayed here for our honeymoon for 2 nights 3 days. The thoughtfulness and effort that the staff put into making our stay exceptional was outstanding from before we had even arrived. Jason kindly arranged transport for us from our stopgap hotel nearby as he was worried about us not being able to get to the hotel. He rang the hotel we were staying at and organised a late check out and taxi for us. We was greeted with drinks, and Ryan and the other lovely two gentlemen kindly put rose petals all down the steps to our room with a rose and chocolates! And let us check in early. The room was immaculate and the soap and shampoo smell amazing and are environmentally friendly. With a great shower and bathroom. We went on two boat trips at dusk with Ryan where we saw

This place is really amazing. We searched a lot to choose the right package for Kinabatangan River and this was really the best choice. Such friendly and helpful staff, we felt so welcome. There are only a few rooms, no big tourism and that's why you feel so comfortable here. (Don't be put off by the stairs, they are easy to climb). Every dish was delicious (even vegetarian at my special request) and the banana pancakes with caramel sauce? OMG the best pancakes we've ever had! The river cruises were very relaxing and we saw all the animals (monkeys, crocodiles, hornbills, elephants). We even had an orangutan outside our room visible from our window! We had an unforgettable experience here. Thank you very much Gert and the team, you are doing an excellent job.

We had a wonderful stay at the last frontier. The hosts Gurt and Jason were so friendly and knowledgable, enabling us to fully enjoy our time in Borneo. The rooms were spacious and comfy and we all slept well. Every meal was delicious and they also catered for dietary requirements. Our trips on the river and walking with guide Rodel were excellent. He was able to spot so many things along the river and really went out of his way to find a crocodile. Even when we weren’t “on safari” he continued to look out for orangutans - we were so lucky to watch an adolescent in the trees right where we were staying. They care about conservation and wildlife as well as respecting the local life. If we are ever lucky enough to return to Borneo, this would be top of our places to return

My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Last Frontier. Every aspect of the stay far exceeded any expectations we had. Right from the initial contact with Gert and Jason (N.B. You're better off booking direct with them via their website), we could tell they are fantastic hosts, and chatting to them in the car to the rest was a brilliant introduction to life in and around the Kinabatangan River, and in Sabah generally, and by the end you feel very relaxed with them, like old friends. The quality of the rooms is beyond belief in such a remote and isolated place. Everything was spotlessly clean and of very high quality. Bed was comfy. Shower was warm (not that I wanted it warm) and had very good pressure. The food was great. The team are happy to adapt to dietary

We stayed at the Last Frontier Boutique resort for two nights. The staff are exceptional and went above and beyond. Rodell was very helpful and assisted with bags and helped any way he could. Jason was very attentive and provided very generous portions of tasty and varied food. We were very impressed that all the staff knew our name on arrival and it is this bespoke approach that really sets this hotel apart. Gert drove us to our next location in Sepilok and kindly dropped our baggage to our next hotel, so we could attend the feeding time at the Orangatuns centre. We went on two boat trips and managed to see a herd of elephants grazing and a few small crocodiles. Overall, I'd highly recommend this hotel. Although the 600 steps are manageable, be aware that some of the planks

Yes, there are steps and yes, you have to sort out your stuff for your stay, but that will all pale into insignificance as against the memories you will take away. Jason, your host is truly hospitable and took great care of us. He is also very interesting to talk to. We ate well. While the boat trips are the highlight of the stay it is the location of The cabins, the sense of being away from it all and the views that are special. You can just about get a single bar of a signal for your phone, but really it is a place to enjoy being in the jungle. We did three river trips with Rodell, including an early morning one (well worth the early rise) and saw just about everything that is on offer, including the elephants, and the biggest crocodile I have ever seen. We will always

Our stay here was definitely the highlight of our 3+ month journey through Asia! Everything was just perfect. Jason is an amazing host and we loved chatting with him during the drive from Sandakan to the lodge. The lodge itself is on top of a hill and you have to climb a lot of stairs to get there. It is not so bad though, we were able to leave our big backpacks at the bottom of the stairs and only take what we needed for a few days. So that's pretty convenient. One day we even saw 3 orang utans while climbing the stairs! The food is simply amazing and cooked with love. The river cruises and morning walk were really great. The guide was very knowledgeable and pointed out a lot of animals. The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable. We were really sad to leave and we

This place is amazing! We had such a nice stay at the resort. The place with jungle and river view, the super nice room (with hot!!! shower), the amazing staff, the food —> Everything is perfect. It really made us feel zo zen and relaxed whilst enjoying Sabah’s nature. We would say it’s a must go when in Borneo. We are a couple, but we could also imagine it is a very cool place for nature/adventure loving kids. Dear Gert, Jason and team - thanks for the lovely stay and making us feel at home far away from home. Wish you all the best!

My partner and I loved our stay at the Last Frontier. Jason and the team were so welcoming and helpful. We found the room, bathroom and bed really comfortable. The location at the top of the stairs provides awesome views, and you are surrounded by rainforest, so you get to hear the sounds of it all the time. The real highlight for us though was the food, Jason is a chef and he does not disappoint, he made us the best meals we have had in Borneo, so thank you Jason for that. There is a reason this place has such great reviews, if you are looking to visit the Kinabatangan River we highly recommend you stay here!
