We would give ten stars if we could! Jason and Gert maintain a very special place in The Last Frontier Resort. Their four room, 12 person maximum resort is the perfect way to spend time in the secondary rainforest exploring the Kinabatangan River. We stayed for three days and two nights and arranged our transportation with Jason from Sandakan as well. It is apparent that Jason and Gert are passionate about the rainforest and want to provide their guests with an educational, hospitable, once in a lifetime opportunity. Yes, there are 600 steps, no WiFi, and no air conditioning, but we appreciated the rare chance to stay comfortably in the rainforest to view wildlife. We stayed for three days and two nights, which included all of our meals, lodging, two afternoon river cruises,

If you want a perfect no hassle Kinabatangan experience, then this is the place to choose.Jason and Gert are extremely professional and will make your holiday truly memorable. The accomodation, sightseeing, transport is well taken care of and the food is divine. We saw the rare pygmy elephants, orangutans, Rhinoceros Hornbills,Langues and many other animals and birds. We also did a trek to the top to see the Kinabatangan river. They work with locals and truly care for the environment and animals there. I will miss Peanut, the super cute kitten, with whom I shared lots of cuddles.I miss him so much.Hope to be back one day.And the stairs are not that difficult to climb. The whole team there is a bunch of super lively and lovely people.Thank you for hosting us. Love Sony,Tapas,Bonny

This resort stands out due to the personalised nature of the service; there are some huge hotels along the riverbank, but this hotel has only 4 rooms. The staff are extremely caring and attentive, and really make the effort to engage in conversation. The restaurant has an amazing view down to the river and across the rainforest, and the food is absolutely brilliantly. Gert, and particularly Jason, went out of their way to ensure that our stay was superb in every way, even going so far as to help with our itinerary for after our stay. I cannot recommend highly enough for a boutique, intimate stay in an incredible environment.

This a great alternative to riverside accommodation. Peaceful with great food and very helpful owners. We saw Pygmy Elephants on the boat trip as well as macaques, proboscis monkeys, silver leaf monkeys. Orangutans were in the trees by the stairs to the resort. I recommend this place.

We also chose to stay here as it was different - the other resorts were all river front villages and this appealed to our sense of adventure. We were picked up from Sepilok and had a comfortable [despite the roads!] drive to Bilit. The 600 steps we had been warned about looked a bit more daunting in the hot sun, but loaned a backpack in which to put his handluggage [my back pack was carried for me by Gert] my husband gainfully began the climb! We did get used to the steps as we went on 3 river trips while we were there - the early morning one starting at 5:15 began with a mist over the river; we saw it clear and the sun rise. Wow factor. The food at the lodge was super - just say when you book if there's anything you don't like. Our guide Rodal was great and full of

We chose to stay here whilst at the Kinabatangan River because it looked different to all the other lodges right by the river, and we definitely made the right choice! It was amazing staying at the top of the hill instead - beautiful views and so much wildlife. We had wild pigs right by the dining area! I really cannot fault this place. The staff are so friendly, accommodating and knowledgable, the room was comfy and clean, and the food was so so good!! We went on a few river cruises where we saw macaques, proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, a wide range of birds and more! If you plan on going to the river, and can handle the 600 steps (they are so worth it and not that bad at all once you’ve done them once, honest!), then stay here so you can hang out in the actual rainforest !

Had the most incredible time here! My partner and I were blown away by the wildlife in the area, and the warmth and hospitality shown by Rodel, Jason and Gert. Rodel was an amazing guide, and a genuine pleasure to spend time with. He has excellent eyes for wildlife spotting and was as excited about the animals as we were! We saw a huge old male orangutan on the first night of the river cruise, and a couple of females and a baby on the second day. We also spotted innumerable other monkeys including proboscis. Of the non-monkey creatures, we saw a crocodile, hornbills and a binturong (a bear/cat-like creature) which we were told was very rare. Jason was an awesome cook and great company - we really enjoyed our evening chats with him including his excellent advice for the rest of

Okay having roughed it for 2 weeks around Borneo this was going to be our holiday splurge. Was it worth it..... hell yes it was. Having read the reviews we knew to pack a lighter rucksack and leave our bags in the secure generator room at the bottom of the climb. Yep the climb is epic, but you just take your time.....and boy the views are worth it. Within a few minutes of going to our room, the rustle of the trees revealed an inquisitive purple faced monkey. This is what we paid for. We thoroughly enjoyed all the tours and took an extra early morning one ( we never go back to any place twice and wanted to make the most of our time in beautiful Kinabatangan). Our guide ‘Rrrrr’ ( sorry this is what happens for delaying writing reviews) was great, we were taken away from the other

From initial inquiry right through our stay and beyond, this was an excellent experience. We opted for the 3d/2n package. Our hosts, Gert and Nicolo, we're great. Our trekking and river guide, Rodel was a fantastic spotter. The river cruises are the highlight, but the food was good and generous and the room very comfortable too.

This is a great place to get away from it all, no WiFi no telephones but surprisingly there is electricity and hot water. The approach to the lodge can be daunting as there roughly 500 steps up to the lodge in what looks like a rickety staircase. But do not let this put you off as it is well worth the climb and the stairs are more robust than they look. Advise is to take as little as possible with you and wear teevas (or equivalents) as these cope much better on the sometimes slippery steps than hiking boots/shoes. Also once you understand Jason and Gert ethos around sustainability and being in harmony with the landscape you’ll understand why the staircase has not been replaced with a concrete monstrosity. The food is very good, but sadly only Western breakfasts are offered -
