I'm a bit late with this review, but my family and i loved this place so much I regretted not giving is a thumbs up sooner. The drive is a bit depressing, with endless palm oil plantations, but once you climb the squillion stairs you're in heaven. Oh-so worth it! The view is divine, and the wildlife experience is just wonderful. There are orangutans, proboscis monkeys and macaques all over the place, but the prize for us was seeing a family of pygmy elephants swim across the river right in front of our boat. Two females were protecting a tiny wee baby who had clearly only just learnt to swim and sometimes disappeared completely under the surface using his trunk as a snorkel. Magical. Jason was a wonderful host, keeping our 4 kids engaged with endless knowledge about the bugs

We did the 3D2N package and it was fantastic. I cannot hesitate to recommend the last frontier boutique hotel high enough. We did two afternoon boat trips along the Kinabangtan river and we travelled even further one evening down the river to see the Pygmy elephants - lots of wildlife! The food was really lovely and the room and ensuite were very clean. Looking at the previous reviews, I agree that the room is basic but it’s everything you need and it has a lovely tree house feeling. You really are in the fore here and views are beautiful. If you are a bit worried about mosquitoes, don’t be.We didn’t have any in our room. I usually get bitten alive and didn’t get bitten once, just wear long trousers for dinner. They also put mosquito coils out at dinner so you are pretty safe

I spent two nights in this resort with my family. It's a wonderful place and you can find there the best host I've ever met. In everything you see here you can feel that the malaysian guy (I didn't meet the belgian one) that manage this resort loves this place and the impressive sorrounding wildlife . All is well managed and the food is outstanding. If you like relax, nature and good foods this is the right place, if you like parties and you hate stairs avoid it. A special thank to the manager who made our stay unforgettable.

We stayed here on a two night package. As others have mentioned, and is well flagged in their website, the lodge sits atop a verrrrryyy long stair case. While we appreciated the remote location, some guests might find it a challenge as they will need to navigate it for every cruise. That aside, Gert and Jason run a great operation. From booking, to follow up questions, to our actual stay, they were prompt, professional, and very customer oriented. The lodge is small (4 or 5 units only), offering intimacy and adding to the appreciation of nature. Our river guide was terrific, as we saw wild orangutans, crocodiles, proboscis monkeys galore, and even a gibbon. We would book again if we came back.

Just came back from a 3D2N stay with a 7 years old. And she wants to go back again before we even left the city. The hosts are knowledgeable and so accommodating. The 600 steps up to the resort were a bit daunting, but the view and breeze up there were well worth the climb. Plus, every meal were so delicious that even my picky eater raved about it. Rooms were simple, but spacious and clean even with an extra bed in there. The trek on the ridge was enjoyable and the views were just amazing. Told them this was our third attempt to see pygmy elephants and they made it happened! Finally another item off our bucket list. The resort only has 4 rooms and can take 12 max. A definite plus point for us to be away from crowds. So glad we opted for this little gem rather than all

Superb place in the heart of the jungle, really remote and intimate 4 rooms lodge on the top of a hill, far from the other resorts on the river. Kinabatangan is beautiful, plenty of wildlife to observe, very nice surroundings apart from the palm oil plantations that sit endlessly behind the 'corridor' of conservation...But what strikes us the most was the level of service here, our host Jason was truely amazing, a man who really understand what hospitality is, honest and really helpful ( even buying me medicines as I was a little sick or give us massage oil to my mum and I as we had pain in the legs after descenting Kinabalu). We had the best food here comparing to anywhere in Sabah, everything handmade even crème fouettée ( for us, french, that's important !)with a real

Excellent value for money, the best food we have had whilst being in Malaysia and friendly, knowledgeable staff who couldn’t have done any more for us. Our visit started with Jason (one of the owners) picking myself and my boyfriend up from our hotel in a modern and comfortable 4x4. The transfer lasted around 2 hours but it flew by. It cost 80MYR per person for a round trip from Sandakan. Jason spoke to us in perfect English and helped us plan the rest of our trip around the island suggesting places for us to visit. When we arrived at the hotel we had to place the bags we didn’t require in a secure store and walk up circa 600 steps. We had read about this previously so just took what we needed for the 3 days and 2 nights we were here. It turned out we were the only people

Smooth booking and prompt communication. Gorgeous views and I suspect quieter than other lodges given there were only 4 or 5 rooms. Food was delicious especially the local dishes. Jason who manages the lodge is v informative and knowledgeable, he’ll have good recommendations (especially food) for many places in Malaysia so just ask. Principled owners/managers who put their money where their mouth is re environmental sustainability, there’s a deep love of nature and it’s protection. Those with mobility concerns should be aware there’s a c600 step climb to the lodge (no ramps) every time you take a river cruise and on initial arrival.

What an amazing experience. This accommodation is fabulous. They have 4 rooms. It sits on a hill overlooking Kinabatangan River. There are 580 odd steps uphill to get you to your accommodation. The steps can be a little hard work with a back pack walking up them by totally worth it. They do have a storage locker at the base for you to leave any bags you don’t need rather than carry them up. The meals were restaurant quality and delicious. The meals were huge. Try cater for vegetarians. You can also buy soft drink and beer at very reasonable prices. The staff were the nicest people we have met in Malaysia. A bit thankyou to Jason and Randall and the other staff for their hospitality and making our stay fabulous. We stayed 2 nights. The communication via email was informative
