We spent 3 nights in Mayfair Hotel. Have to say this accommodation has everything for a really comfortable stay. It is wonderfully located near the Waterfront. It has really comfortable beds, great aircon, hot shower,. it even has a line in the bathroom for drying clothes. This is the type of accommodation that improves by the day. It comes at a really great price.

I've stayed in dozens of budget hotels in SE Asia and the Mayfair Hotel is one of the best, if not the best, in practical terms. It's the little things that a tourist appreciates after a few weeks of being on the road, and the Mayfair provides several of them: Reliable wi fi; a chair and desk at which to sit to use that wi fi; flat-screen TV; DVD player; huge selection of DVDs; bottles of filtered drinking water and a flask of hot water for coffee or tea; daily housekeeping and clean sheets and towels; double-paned windows to keep out street noise; a wardrobe and hangers; and numerous electrical outlets for a laptop and battery chargers. Hot showers and air con are givens. The central location means a number of conveniences are within a block or two -- bank ATMs, moneychangers, shops, restaurants, tour operators, marketplaces, and the waterfront. In addition, the proprietor can summon reasonably priced taxis for transportation; other taxi drivers have to be haggled with, and local buses are slow and infrequent. And all of this at a price less than most of the places I've stayed at in Malaysia.

We spent a night in May Fair Hotel before heading to the surrounding areas to see the sights. It may not look attractive at all (top floors of a shophouse); but very central and really good value at only RM50 a night for a no-frills CLEAN air-cond twin room. It is surrounded by shops and eateries, across from the local bus station and a supermarket (Gentingmas Mall), near the waterfront and a short walk to Sandakan Central Market and Harbour Mall.

The tiled-floor room we had came with a flat screen TV, DVD, attached bathroom with bar soap & towels provided, clothes line, hangers, a wardrobe, chairs, a dresser, bottled filtered drinking water and good lighting. The bed was firm and very comfortable for a good night's rest. OMG ... I have not seen so many power points in a single room before - you can practically use and charge all your electrical appliances simultaneously!

Since the hotel does not have a website, you call Mr Lum at +60 89 219855 / 219892 for reservations. He may seem a little arrogant but he really is quite nice. We would recommend this hotel :)

p/s: If you like local fish/prawn crackers ('keropok'), the ones sold in Gentingmas Mall are pretty good at only RM1.40 a packet. Good place to buy snacks etc. before proceeding to Kinabatangan or Sepilok, where things are obviously more expensive.

We were a little nervous going to stay here but once we were settled in we felt very lucky! The rooms we had were very clean, lots of hot water, excellent showers, A/C worked great, wi-fi worked extremely well, and the beds were VERY comfortable. No where else would we have been able to get a tour guide as good as Mr. Lum! He was able to get us great deals on every tour we went on, as well as great prices on taxis! We stayed there for 5 nights and were extremely satisfied! We all have nothing but good things to say about our stay there. Thank you Mr Lum for everything!!!! If we ever get back to Sandakan we will definitely stay here again! Especially if Mr. Lum is there!

We arrived at the hotel Mayfair with no booking. Our first hotel in Sandakan (Hotel Sandakan) was atrocious and we got out after one night. We were on honyemoon and were stressing a little at having nowhere decent to stay.

Hotel Mayfair was a fifth of the price (£10 a night) and had a positive review from some guys we met on a day trip. We were not disappointed when we gave it a try,

The hotel is above a shop and is no architectural gem - most rooms are decorated in blue plastic and look like a hospital. But you get air-con, a hot shower, a 32" TV and all the DVDs you have time to watch (although it helps if you love 80s American Action films). The rooms are large enough and perfectly clean.

Mr Lum the owner (an absolute legend!) appears to work there 24/7 and you occasionally find him sleeping in reception. But he will try anything to make your stay easier from recommending places to eat, finding a laundrette and negotiating a cheap taxi. He even gave my wife a book from the hotel library as she hadn't finished it when we checked out.

Overall, I'd recommend this to any travellers passing through Sandakan - there is no need to try anywhere more expensive if you are only in town for 3-4 days as we were.

Although the rooms aren't huge, they are perfectly adequate for your needs - air-con and massive en-suite, complete with drying line. The room had a dvd player, and there were stacks of dvd's to watch as well as wi-fi at a ridiculously good price. The hotel is amazingly cheap. Mr Lun, the owner, is an amazing man. He's really interesting to talk to and really really helpful. Don't be fooled by his seemingly brash and even apparently rude exterior, if you roll with the punches, you'll find him an extremely intelligent, helpful and savvy host. If you stay here, book a cab through him as he gets a much cheaper price. He'll also advise you on places to go and things to do. There's even take-away menus in the rooms which will deliver.

The rooms in May Fair are surprisingly well-maintained. However, I left May Fair after being scolded by Mr Lum. I was sitting behind one of the internet computers on the 3rd floor and Mr Lum came up the stairs and started shouting and screaming that I'm not allowed to smoke behind the computer. Through all the shouting he didn't hear that I told him I'm a non-smoker. He grabbed the ashtray from next to my keyboard away and the ashes fell all over me. Mr Lum is so incredibly rude. I read the reviews on Tripadvisor and couldn't believe this is the "wonderful" Mr Lum that everybody is so cheerful about. Mr Lum kept on being rude to me, so I packed my bag and went to another hotel in Sandakan.

We were a bit blown away when we got to our room. It doesn't look like much. But for a large clean room, comfy bed, private ensuite, AC, strong wifi, a big screen TV and DVD player, you would pay almost 3 times as much anywhere else in Malaysia. There is even a bit of a washing line in the bathroom if you need it.

On top of all that the manager has a huge range of DVDs you can borrow. There are desktop computers upstairs with internet access at a reasonable price for those without wifi devices. May fair is happy to arrange tours for you as well.

Yes, we too looked at the photos and thought that they resembled hospital beds. And we looked elsewhere initially before choosing this accommodation.

But whatever your budget, this is the best value place you'll find in Sandakan. And by definition, you're wasting your money staying elsewhere.

We were recommended by the taxi driver and from outside you think - oh dear! but once inside greeted by the wonderful Mr Lam we felt very happy. The rooms are a good size and very clean. The bathroom is a bit old but lots of hot powerful water. The wifi was a bit intermittent but Mr Lam was on the phone immediately sorting it out. Hundreds of DVD s to borrow. Good aircon. Good Location. Very quiet outside at night - We would recommend this hotel.

Hi, is possible to use the kitchen for coocking?

I think Mr. Lim will ask her wife to cook for you instead. The couple stay in the hotel themselves. But I did not visited their kitchen but I'm sure there is one. By the way, it should be a small one by western standard.
