We took 3 cruises and 1 night package in RB lodge after seeing good reviews for wildlife spotting. Afternoon cruise - was good, we saw lot of different species of monkeys, snake and some birds. Guides was really trying to find animals. Night cruise - we saw nothing for 1 hour cruise and guides was not interested in wildlife, were talking to each other and sometimes not even using light to spot something. I do not think you can spot some animals when you are making so big noise with engine. Morning cruise - same as night cruise. Overall we were dissapointed, guides were bad and not interested in spotting wildlife. They just wanted to have money and end the cruises as soon as possible. Accomodation - old, dirty, not cleaned for very long time, mold everywhere, cockroaches in the room. It was clear that they did not even wash bathroom after guesta before us. Food - they made fried rice (probably with old meat) for breakfast after which I got serious stomach problems for 4 days!!!!!

Our stay at RB Lodge was a perfect way to end our travels in Borneo. The manager and his family are very accommodating and friendly, constantly on the look out for wildlife even when you’re sitting back at the lodge. We did the 3D2N package which included 4 fantastic boat tours. We were guided by Shh and Layla, both of whom have such a passion for the wildlife along the river. We recently visited the beautiful Danum Valley but we were blown away by the number of animal sightings we had on our cruises along the Kinabatangan. Among the many animals were saw were macaques, langurs, proboscis monkeys, kingfishers, hornbills, monitor lizards, pythons and an orangutan! We do not understand other reviews that complained about the accommodation. The room has everything you need for what little time you’ll spend in it and the hot shower is a bonus. The food is delicious and there is a constant supply of free water, tea and coffee. Just keep an eye on your belongings around the ‘jungle mafia’ macaques. We thoroughly recommend RB lodge, particularly if you’re the kind of traveller who appreciates a small locally run business with personality. Tom and Meg

Really helpful and friendly staff who are keen to play chess and interact with the guests after dinner. The room was basic but good value for what you pay. Fan in the room is enough to keep at a comfortable temperature. No wifi available but is possible to get mobile data. Not possible to get Grabs from here. I would recommend you plan onward travel in advance as there is local taxi guy who travels between to Sandakan and back but this is only available once a day and seems to go very early (0630am) when we were there. Went on afternoon, evening and morning boat tour. They were all fantastic, great knowledge and pointing out many different animals. Was glad I went on all 3 tours and would definitely recommend!! Dinner was also nice and good size portions.

We have experienced two river cruises (night and morning). It was far from commercial attraction. Jahin is honest, friendly and egaged. He knows how and where to find animals very well and he has always binoculars. We spotted a lot of animals with him but pay attention that it depends if you are lucky. We had whole boat just for us and we could decide how long we want to look on an animal. We are satisfied and excited. Contact number is: 011 35383981

Lodges were the worst we have ever stayed in. Moist dirty linen, filthy bathroom with (snails) cockroaches and other crawlies all over our bags and the bed. Cobwebs everywhere. Black mold. Used to roughing it and expected basic for the cost but this was just neglect. Friendly manager, good tours and good food but lodges were disgusting. We moved to Greenview down the road as soon as we could.

The rooms are very basic and already a bit old, but the staff there is incredible. I booked one night and started extending every day again. they have great packages including delicious food and river tours - which are by far the best. they really take their time. we spotted a big herd of pygmy elephants and while other tours left after a while, because the time might have been over, we could stay as long as we wanted. this happened on every river cruise I took. mostly we were only three or four people, while others were packed. the owners even took us out to a little festival a bit outside of town. it is a very personal place and so welcoming. one of my favorite places.

We met a couple from Holland while we were staying near Ranau and we were planning to go towards Sandakan. They have mentioned Sukau and the beauty of the jungle, so we decided to head down there and experience some 'off the grid' jungle adventure, despite them mentioning they did not see much animals. Well, they were probably in the wrong place! We stopped at RB Lodge as it was offering lower prices compared to the average in the area. We initially decided to take the package for 1 night only, but extended to 2 nights after the first night. For 250RM you get accommodation for 2 nights, 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts and 1 lunch. We had our own lodge - very basic: 2 single beds, 1 chair and 1 desk. Own bathroom. YES, the rooms are not particularly charming and could do with some renovation work. But still, at that price you would be a fool to expect a 5* resort. What you can expect though, is TOP customer service. Another 4 people arrived at the lodge the same day we did, so we shared the boat rides with them. We were out on the river at different times of the day with Jan and Henry. These guys are just amazing at spotting animals and birds where other boats were not even stopping. You can use their binoculars as well, and they are happy to stop for how long you want. I was truly amazed at the amount of things we saw: orangutans (mom+baby, male, another mom + baby). Proboscis monkeys, another 2 types of monkeys, snakes, owls, king fishers, and so on. When not on the boat looking for wildlife, you can chill at the lodge, there is unlimited coffee and tea, a ping pong table and various hammocks. No wifi - so enjoy being free for 48 hours, it's refreshing, and have a chat with the people at the lodge, they are lovely and always making sure their guests have everything they need. The food is also lovely - and this is coming from somebody who is truly picky at food and does not enjoy Asian food as much as travelling in the area. If you book before heading there you can arrange being picked up at checkpoint, otherwise you can still make your way there from the junction. They can also organize transport back to the junction when it's time to leave.

The three of us did some research in Sukau whilst we were staying in Sepilok Rainforest Lodge. They advertise a very pricey company in Sukau that do river tours. We were recommended Sukau RB Lodge by a previously back packer who had stayed here. Yas and Jan were very welcoming! Along with Yas's wife and the boat driver (I forgotten his name) This is a very simple chilled place to stay. You have your own lodge with hot water and a fan. The price you pay you expect to be sharing so it was a lovely surprise that we had our own room. Don't expect luxury or 5* you get what you pay for. There are many places along the river that charge double with the boats full to the brim of people. We had our own boat between the three of us. It was a very personal experience and when we were observing the wildlife they let us watch for as long as we liked before moving on searching for the next animal! We purchased the two night and three day stay for 250 pesos. Other company's are charging 490 for this service. Jan our tour guide is very knowledgable and could spot wildlife with the blink of an eye. The night tour was great fun, searching in the pitch black not knowing what you're going to see next! We saw a variety of birds, monkeys, snakes, lizards and crocodiles Unfortunately the elephants have moved on from this area around 2 hours away. So it's pot luck if you're in the right area. The food is great 👍🏽 very delicious unlimited tea and coffee. The lodge organised Mr C to come and collect us from our accommodation in Sepilok and took us straight to our lodge. He also dropped us off at the check point to get a coach to KK after our stay. There's no wifi but it all adds to the experience of staying in the jungle with lovely welcoming people!

The crew managing the lodge is super nice & helpful. The dinners we got and the boat trip were perfect too. Unfortunately the chalets themselves need a solid renovation. They're super basic - certainly not for honeymooners!
