Room was good and bed comfortable. The hotel had a nice pool and staff were friendly. Food was ok with the omelette being a winner for breakfast. We arrived at 1500hrs and had to wait an hour and a half to check in which was a bother as no air conditioning in the lobby

Staff members friendly and helpful. Rooms clean and spacious. Lovely quiet area, away from traffic noise. Great place for luxury and relaxation. The only problem with the location is that you need a taxi to go to town. Refrigerator in room. You have to turn it on. No mini bar. Two complementary bottles of water. After that $$$. Shampoo and shower gel bottles only topped up for two showers. It must be so expensive. Toilet paper the same. They must count the sheets

Very welcoming, warmest pool I've ever been in, indoors or out ( this one is outdoor). Nice room, but no balcony and windows couldn't be opened, so dependent on the Aircon which fortunately was quiet. Bathroom plumbing 'dodgy' - basin very slow to drain, toilet flush sometimes didn't work due to sticking float valve, and toilet bowl retained too much water? Shower was good!

This hotel was allocated to us for our stay on Borneo by the company we did our tour with. As we were flying to KL and to give us some downtime, I booked an extra night here…. We received a warm welcome at check-in. One of the receptionists recognised us on our second visit which was nice. Room’s allocated were 707 and 511. Both were the same layout and found to be clean and tidy. Comfortable bed and the en-suite shower bathroom was just the job for our stay. Breakfast was included in the rate where there was plenty of choices for the start of your day. Plenty of Eastern and Western food to choose from and an separate egg station where they were cooked to order. We also ate in the hotel’s Chinese restaurant where the food was excellent and very well priced. There was a small bar/cafe where the local cakes served were lovely and went down a treat. Alcohol prices were not cheap, but not extortionate. There is a huge pool here which we didn’t use as we were here only a short time. Unsure of any other facilities to be honest! Staff here seemed friendly enough and reception were helpful. Overall a nice stay in Sandakan. The hotel is outside of town up on the hill, so a walk or taxi from the hotel will be required. The hotel is in good condition but the rooms could probably do with a bit of modernisation. I will say though Covid 19 has hit Borneo hard so they are trying to get back on their feet and at the moment this is the only 4* hotel open in town. We both very much it does as Borneo is a wonderful country with friendly helpful people and wildlife that is awesome. We have left a piece of our hearts here….

This was the final hotel for our TripaDeal tour of Borneo, and we stayed on for a couple of extra nights. We found our room to have everything we needed, with a large bathroom with separate bath and shower. There is a fridge and plenty of cupboard and hanging space. The beds were comfortable and staff brought firm pillows or extra towels when requested. The air conditioning worked well. The large lobby and cafe/bar area are open air but in general the ceiling fans kept the air moving. It is a flight of steps down to the pool area so to buy alcoholic drinks or snacks you have to walk upstairs. The pool is quite big and there is a separate toddlers pool, both with water slides. There isn’t really enough lounges or chairs & tables around the pool though, especially when there are several tour groups at once. It is a distance to walk to the gym/spa area to pick up or drop off pool towels. All the staff we dealt with were friendly and helpful. The bar staff were good, but not always aware of how cocktails should be made. Some drinks were quite strong, others very weak. However, prices are reasonable enough. Our room was towards the end of the corridor on the third floor and the WiFi signal was weak, especially in the evenings when all guests were trying to use it. We tended to sit in the lobby area to do most internet work. Middle of the day the signal in the room was fine, but guests usually aren’t in their rooms then. We were very happy with this hotel and would use it again if we returned to Sandakan.

We chose this hotel as it looked to be the best available. While it was nice, a few things put us off - it is 1.8 kms from food/shopping options, which means a taxi or a fairly strenuous walk up hill on the way back. We found the food on offer, especially at night, restricted. Our first morning we went for breakfast at 9.45am and there was hardly anything left. We decided it was our fault for leaving it so late, so we went at 9am the following morning, same situation! Nothing appears to be replenished during the breakfast service, well, apart from the spoons and dishes - even if there's nothing in the brain marie! The pool area is lovely but if we want a refreshing beer in the afternoon, you have to go back upstairs to an enclosed area, and that spoils the whole idea of being on holiday. This bar/Cafe is a bit hit and miss with their cocktails too, depends on who makes them as to what you get, if indeed they have the ingredients. Our room on level 5 was clean, quiet and comfortable, so no complaints there. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Would I go back? Probably not.

The facilities and staff were of very bad quality. No sauna and steam room as advertised, they were always switched off. Resturants were holding a private evening event which you had to book for in advance, they were so concerned about the event there was no service throughout the day. Lunch took over 90 minutes and most of the time I'd order only to be told 30 minutes later that they didn't have it. Breakfast options were limited and sparse, I arrive at breakfast a good 45 minutes before it ended to only find scraps and no-one at the omelette station. No access to water refills - for such a big hotel in an area that should pride in being sustainable you couldn't refill water. The restaurant staff had to fill it for you and the water was boiled water, so given to us hot and it tasted of chlorine. To buy fresh water was £3 for 250ml. Walk around the hotel closed off due to rainy season. We are no longer in this season. I asked to speak to the manager and he refused to meet with me Special menus printed for lunch, but none of the offers were active Private balcony attached to room, but no cushions provided to sit outside Lift wasn't working General staff vibe was that we were an inconvience and they were often grouped together and laughing and tourists

We stayed at The Sabah Hotel as part of a Trail Finders tour of Borneo and found the hotel to be fairly typical of a mid-range safari type hotel so not massively glamorous but functional enough to suit your requirements. The rooms are fairly basic but clean, comfortable and quiet so good enough for our requirements. We didn’t have a great deal of interaction with the staff but any requirements were accommodated without any issue. Dining options were a little limited (a Chinese restaurant and a buffet selection) but as we were only staying for a few days this was fine. The pool area is nice but the sunbed pads have seen better days (a small complaint). The pool surroundings are essentially jungle areas so don’t be surprised if you have visitors! We had a monitor lizard decide to take a dip in the pool while we were in there. Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation centre is within a 30 minute drive of the hotel making the Sabah Hotel a good base to tour from.

We stayed at the Sabah Hotel for our first two nights in Borneo. The rooms and the facilities were good and there is a large pool for a relaxing swim. The bar area was good and the service from the staff was exceptional, especially Robinah who was always friendly and very helpful.

We only stayed for one night but couldn’t fault the hotel. We received a warm welcome at reception and really liked our spacious room which had recently been renovated. The hotel has an interesting colonial style and I would love to learn a bit more about the history of it. We had lovely views of the jungle from our room. We didn’t get time to use the pool but it looked clean and inviting- it was not busy at all. Breakfast was very good with lots of choice, some items did disappear quickly due to large groups arriving all at once but these were replenished after about 10 minutes of being empty. We came back to the hotel as a part of a tour group for lunch and the food was about average.
