After so many great reviews, I was expecting something more. That said, it was acceptable. It is far from clean but not filthy either. I had booked a few months ahead and then confirmed a few days prior to my arrival and they were totally unprepared. Fortunately, there was a room but it opened directly onto reception and the lounge. They did scrounge around to get me clean bedding and towel which were damp. I assumed newly washed but not completely dried. Good location. Nice people. I had an early departure and one of the boys made me some scrambled eggs and toast. Tea, coffee on offer at all times.
Having spent a number of days in dorms, we were keen for a comfortable private room and this is what we found at Sandakan Backpackers. AC worked really well, clean white sheets, clean enough shared bathroom, nice staff, and good location near the seafront. Breakfast was okay, perhaps a little basic with toast, a bowl of ready-made hard boiled eggs, and some questionable spreads. Tea and coffee available all day! But we would definitely come back!
Just a few steps away from Sheraton Four Points in Sandakan .. shares the same beautiful waterfront. Clean room and a very friendly staff. There are many small eateries and the big seafood market is just round the corner . The room comes with breakfast.... help yourself to toasts and hardboiled eggs and most important a Generous helping of fresh fruits. Not recommended for travelers who are not good with steep stairs - it is a steep climb as the hostel is not on ground level. A bit difficult if you have a suitcase .
Turned up at the hostel to find out that they had double booked our room. Considering we had booked it on booking.com over a week prior to our arrival this seemed poor. We were offered dorm beds instead of the booked double sea view room but at the same price. Given the circumstances more effort could have been made to help. All round poor service
We stayed a couple of nights at Sandakan Backpackers Hostel and it was very good. The location was good since it was close to the place where you get the buses to Sepilok, there were plenty of restaurants and supermarkets around and even a shopping mall. The common areas are quite cozy especially the terrace on the top floor with view over the sea. The beds are on our bedroom were ok the mattress could be a bit thicker but for a couple of night it does the job. The shower in the room was handy. The paintings from previous guests all over the place were nice and I regret we didn't stay long enough so I could paint something myself. The breakfast was acceptable and enough. Aside all this, I think the best was Jacki, a member of the staff, that was very generous, friendly and kind…
