Detailed Reviews
The Perhentian Islands are as spectacular as everyone says. The Bayu Dive Lodge is located in between Fauna Beach Resort and Arwana Resort. The water taxi drops you off at the dock in front of the Arwana resort and it's a short walk to the Bayu Dive Lodge. The location couldn't be better. The Lodge has about 6 beach chairs with umbrellas. If you are able to snag one, it is so peaceful to read, relax, and watch the different hues of the water. When the tide is low, you can walk out to basically where there is a small barrier reef.
The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Din, who worked in the restaurant, was always pleasant even though he worked 12+ hour shifts. The food is varied and reasonably priced and they serve alcohol. The rooms include breakfast in which you order from a set menu.
The dive staff is extremely professional. People come alone for the dive experience and that's obvious. They love their job and are passionate about it.
We stayed in one of the beach front huts which was advertised to sleep 3-4 people. The huts are simple and basic, but I was a bit disappointed by the quality of the huts. For example, the huts are built from dark brown wooden slates which are very porous. By that, I mean, you see holes in the slates and gaps between the slates. The huts are not soundproofed so you hear everything even when people are talking in a normal voice. Although I didn't get bitten, my friend was eaten alive by mosquitoes during the night. Perhaps this was due to the porousness of the room.
Due to the dark brown wood, the huts are just dark - even though they have windows. The lighting that was provided was not adequate - it's just a very dark hut but on the upside, we didn't spend very much time in the hut.
As far as amenities, bring your own supplies because you are given two towels, a bar of soap, and a role of tissue. If you need a hand cloth, consider bringing your own.
A few of us had difficulties taking thorough showers due to the low water pressure. The water comes out at a trickle. If you have a lot of hair and want to thoroughly wash it after being in the water, consider waiting until you make it back to mainland Malaysia.
Lastly, I know the resort is basic but I was surprised by the mattress and how uncomfortable it was. When I sat on it, it shifted and I sank to the bottom and felt the springs. I'm not sure how old the mattress is and maybe it's difficult to replace furniture on the island, but it made for a bad night's sleep.
All in all, I enjoyed visiting the Perhentian Islands - the Lodge is great for those who want to enjoy exploring the water. But, if you are looking for a Lodge with a little bit more to offer, I'd go somewhere else.

+1
Bayu Dive Lodge is lovely; approx 15 brand new huts with immaculate modern contemporary en-suite bathrooms and some cheaper accommodation in more basic blocks towards the back. The showers were excellent, with hot and cold water supply. Staying at Bayu Dive Lodge is staying on the beach in a hut – so you don’t get hair dryers, complimentary towels, shampoos, creams, soaps etc and safes; but we had suitcase locks and had no problems but would recommend that you do use locks on your baggage to be on the safe side; and there are several small shops on the island where you can buy cheap towels and toiletries, sun creams etc if you don’t want to carry it all with you. The huts were only just recently built and had new air-con and fans. We had a very comfortable double bed, wardrobe, lamp, full length mirror and side cabinet. Everything was newly installed and of good quality. We also had full wi-fi access in our hut as we had our own lap top with us and the connection was the best one we had in all of SE Asia even though we were on a remote island! The lodge has a dive shop which takes out regular dives for both beginners, discovery dives, advanced divers and people wanting to complete PADI or SSI courses. Diving in the area is very good with lots to see including some wrecks. The Lodge is run jointly by a Swedish and a local Malaysian – so you get the best of both worlds; local experience and European hygiene standards which most travellers will appreciate. There are quite a few choices on this island for accommodation but beware because a lot of it is very very run down. We found this brand new place after first booking into nearby Flora Bay – and promptly moving out because Flora bay was so run down, grotty and awful. A few of the other places were also not much to write home about as we checked out Coral Bay and Perhentian Island resort; they both needed a lot of maintenance and a facelift and had grotty bathrooms. Bayu Dive Lodge was basic but immaculate and the best accommodation we saw on the island...plus it has a good restaurant attached and great staff and an excellent diving crew whose company we really enjoyed. We stayed here for 11 days and were very happy with everything.

My girlfriend Carla and me stayed two nights in Bayu Dive Lodge and really liked and enjoyed the peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.
The employees are very friendly and helpful no matter what question or problem comes up.
If you are searching for a place to disconnect and enjoy the beach/nature, then you are definitely on the right address.
PS: During our stay, Bayu Dive Lodge did not offer diving due to the just recently eased covid restrictions. Therefore, I can not say something about this topic :)

The good;
The restaurant staff were nice and friendly. The manager spoke very good English. The a/c was cold. It's only a short water taxi away from long beach where you can find some better options for food.
The bad;
The food was beyond terrible. The beds were uncomfortable. The dive centre is an accident waiting to happen, boat driver almost ran a diver over and nearly hit two people with the propellers. The dive guides were unprofessional and unsafe, taking newly certified open water divers on a low visibility, strong current wreck dive. In hindsight I should have checked their certification before booking in with them. We were also not provided with safety sausages.
Overpriced, I gave two stars only because of the restaurant staff, avoid at all cost!

Location was good, but on the beach, like everything else. Food was sub standard, so we only ate there a couple of times. Room was ok, but bathroom always smelt rather funny. Visibility whilst diving was poor but water was warm. Shallow quite far out so it take a while before you reach a depth where you can actually snorkel. like much ot SE Asia, Malaysia hasn't realised that if you look after the environment then you can make more tourist dollars, and it shows. Everything aimed at backpackers and hedonists, who invariably don't spend much money. Both diving instructors smoked...! Cost a bit more than expected and exchange rate on the island wasn't competitive.

Didn't stay at the Lodge - but dined at the restaurant. Service was extremely slow - one hour wait for hamburger at lunch and it wasn't busy. Staff not helpful at all. Wouldn't bother going there again

If you call yourself a traveller rather than a tourist, Bayu is the best choice. The people there are very friendly and helpful. Guilanes is a super nice instructor who has taken good care of me as an inexperienced and clumsy diver. The room is lovely and you can see that the people there has put some thoughts and efforts on the place from the lamp, the painting and the garden. Unlike other big and expensive resort, Bayu provides an exceptional experience with its unique ambience. Will definitely be back.

For me it was the second time on Perhentian and in the Bayu Dive Lodge. I did my OWD-referral there with a friend and now came back with my girlfriend. For her it was the first time in Asia ever and so I had to prove that it was a good idea to go there on holiday.
Bayu Dive Lodge is not a five-star Resort. It never was and it has never intended to be.
We had a seaview chalet and, like on my first visit, it was clean, functional and well-cared for. The aircon was effective but it is never a good idea to cool the room down too much because you have to go out again eventually.
I do not understand the other reports mentioning that the personnel was not taking care of the guests and were even rude sometimes.
I had mailed with the owner, Ari, beforehand, she remembered me and was very kind and very helpful.
When we arrived there with a lot of dive-luggage etc (we stayed 9 nights) we were greeted very friendly, most of the staff was there two years before and, as I remembered them, also very niice and helpful.
The diving-center staff were all new, but Billy, Chris and Jana were funny guys and we had a lot of really great dives with them. We brought our own equipment but the things they rent out to others looked also very clean and well serviced.
Although we were there during the school holidays in Malaysia and Singapore the Island was not at all packed with People as I had expected.
What else to say? The food was always fresh and good, although I also think the choice of meals for package guelsts could be a little wider, but Mama, Mami and Nancy were always very friendly and cooperative.
We definitely recommend the resort and the dive-center and hope to be back soon.
