We have just returned from our wonderful holiday in Malaysia. We spent 5 nights of our three week holiday at D'Ayumni House on Perhentian Besar. While we liked the accommodation here, we didn't find it brilliant. The chalets are really very basic and your chalet contains a room with a bed and 2 chairs. There a tiny holes in the floor boards and the bathroom is tiny with a very basic shower over the toilet.

Let me start with the positives:

1) Ms Lee - the owner, is really amazing. Very friendly and helpful and always has a smile on her face. She is really accommodating and will assist with all your queries. For example, I sustained a back injury 6 weeks before leaving for Malaysia which was still an issue during the trip. After the bumpyish speedboat ride over to the island, I went and asked Ms. Lee if she could arrange alternative transport for me using the slower and bigger boat used by Tuna Bay Resort. She sorted this out for me and ensured that we were acccepted onto the boat with the payment vouchers that we had received for the speedboat trip.

2) Location - although D'Ayumni isn't right on the beach, it is still very close to the main stretch of beach with the best snorkelling. The beach in front of Tuna Bay resort has a lovely stretch of white sand with by far the best snorkelling on the island. One can snorkel right off the beach and see live coral and amazing sea life and reef fish. Just a friendly tip, be careful of a little fish called the monarch damsel which is guarding eggs at the moment and will happily give you a nip on your leg if you get to close. :-). It was quite entertaining sitting on the beach and watching people hop around in surprise.

Now for some of the negatives:

1) Lack of sea view - I think this is one of the only places on the island that doesn't have a sea view. On a beach holiday one would really like to have some sort of sea view but here, the chalets are built in a semi-circle and look onto each other behind another resort and a dive centre. There is nothing much to see by sitting on your patio.

2) Basic - we found the chalets a little bit too basic for our liking. The delux family chalet literally contained two double beds, 2 wooden chairs and a small cabinet for clothes. The bed didn't even have any bedding on it, only a fitted sheet. We managed to find 2 small blankets in the cupboard which we used to sleep under. The bathroom was very basic as well. Our showerhead was attached to the wall with some wire and the water pressure wasn't great. The bathroom was very small and very basic.

3) Cleanliness - we didn't find this aspect too bad at first but on closer inspection, we realised that the rooms were not actually that clean. The glass lamp shades on the wall next to the beds were full of cobwebs and dust and it was clear that they hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. At one stage we needed to move the one bed away from the wall slightly as something had fallen behind it and we noticed how dirty it was against the wall. I must also state that for 3 days of our stay Ms. Lee wasn't there and had left the resort to 2 other woman to run. Firstly, they weren't very friendly, but more specifically, they seemed to leave a huge mess around the kitchen area after breakfast. The one evening my hubby went into the kitchen to try and find a glass and he noticed that all the left over breakfast (for example scrambled eggs) was still lying in a pan on the stove top. This was a little off-putting.

4) Aircons and fan - as mentioned we had booked one of the more expensive delux chalets. We had a problem with our aircon in that although it worked, it only had one setting and that was freezing cold. Although we would change the temperature and the settings on the remote, the aircon wouldnt adjust. One afternoon we came into the room and turned it on and it was frozen. Ice pieces came flying out of it and then there was water dripping onto the bed for ages afterwards. Our fan also only had one setting and that was "on". The control on the wall to adjust the speed had been removed from the wall and so we couldn't change the speed. My sister had the delux unit next to ours and she had no remote control at all for her aircon.

So, all in all, this place was ok without being anything great. It is very basic and probably caters more for backpackers and younger people. I think that the reason people give it good reviews is because of how taken they are with Ms. Lee...and yes, she is great, but the resort itself needs some more care and attention and is very basic. If we went back to the Perhantians we would look for somewhere a little nicer to stay.

Now for those of you who are interested, here are some tips and advice on the Perhentians in general:

1) The beach outside of Tuna Bay is the best for snorkelling. The beach outside the Perhentian Island Resort is the most scenic and has a beautiful bay. The sea here is good for swimming with no real coral of note. My hubby did get to snorkel with a turtle here which was great. The beach area outside of The Reef Chalets and Mamas Chalets is sort of non existent. It didn't look very nice and probably wouldn't be great for swimming.

2) The water taxi's are very expensive and hence it makes getting between the two islands (Kecil and Besar) not really affordable. Also getting around the island itself is expensive. For example, a trip from Tuna Bay beach to Long Beach on Kecil costs MYR25 per person, one way. A water taxi from Tuna Bay resort to Turtle Bay will cost about MYR15 - 20 per person. A trip of about 100 - 150 meters costs around MYR5 per person. For this reason and unless you are happy to factor in these costs for the transport, it is important to pick accommodation close to the area you want to spend most of your time.

3) Alcohol is very expensive on the island. A Tiger beer for example will cost between MYR7 - MYR10. A cocktail at Tuna Bay resort is about MYR25.

4) For good food at a good price, try Abdul's chalets. Tuna Bay food was pretty good but the setting (eating in a hall type environment) wasn't for us. Also, their prices are much higher than elsewhere. For a great fruit ice blended and a great fruit shake, try Nia's Cafe on the beach between Tuna Bay and Abduls. PS - Abdul's actually sets up tables on the sand at night and so you can eat dinner with your toes in the sand.

5) Divers, try Universal Divers next to Tuna Bay resort. They had a great bunch of people working there and were very friendly. They were also supremely organised and safety was a top priority. They are a very professional outfit with good prices.

Well, I hope this is helpful and that you all have a great time in the Perhentians. It is very beautiful and we loved it there!

Stayed in this resort for 2 nights (4-6 May 2012). There are 12 rooms altogether and the owner Ms Lee and her staff Nusi are extremely helpful in assisting us. Ms Lee really takes good care of her customers... The kitchen within the premises are free to use for her customers.
The setback of this resort is that they control the timing of the use of electricity in the room. There are also plenty of mosquitoes.

This resort is just only 50m to the beach and also along the same beach as TunaBay Resort, Cozy Chalet, Cocohut and Abdul Chalet.

There is a small cafe just at the entrance of D'Ayumni House. This cafe serves local breakfast, lunch & dinner at very reasonable price. There is also another mini cafe on the way to Abdul Chalet. They serves rather reasonably priced local food too and it is by the beach.

I had 2 nights of BBQ dinner throughout my 3D2N stay. One at Cocohut and the other at Abdul's Chalet.
Cocohut has better ambient but of coz nothing comes free, you will need to pay slightly higher price for the ambient and food at Cocohut.
BBQ food at Abdul's Chalet has quiet a good deal too but they do not serve beer.

We initially booked a few days at D' Ayumni before we arrived so as to ensure we had somewhere to stay whilst having a look around. Once the few days were up we had no hesitation in choosing to stay on for the rest of our holiday which was another 6 days! The manager of D'Ayumni, Ms Lee was great... friendly, funny and very helpful, and her children very cute too.... She made our stay!
We stayed in the deluxe chalet which I'd describe as a fairly standard, hut style (for Asia) around a court-yard (not right on the beach), and is more than adequate. We had 2 x double beds, table, chairs, wardrobe and bathroom, and a balcony. It is pretty much as described on their website. There is aircon but note that electricity is only on for parts of the day (12pm-2pm) and throughout the evening from about 6pm - 8am), but this turns out to be the times you will need it, provided you can live with having a cold shower sometimes! if you are looking for luxury this is not it, but I think it is good value for money in comparison to the other places on offer.
There is also a restaurant onsite which is run by a French cook... the food was lovely and I highly recommend the Crepes for breakfast and Beef Brochette for dinner! Generally the food on the Island is aimed towards western tastes so is a bit of a disappointment if you're after "authentic" Malaysian dishes.
The beach is a 30 second walk from the court-yard and is right in the middle of the very small stretch of accommodation/diving schools/restaurants. 30 seconds more and you're outside of the tuna-bay resort which is a lot more expensive but has the best stretch of beach with sunbeds to laze on, and coral to snorkel around right there in front of the beach. If you're after a clean, friendly safe place to stay without breaking the budget then I highly recommend D'Ayumni!

Avoid this place! The cabins do not have sufficient flooring so insects come up easily into the rooms. There are cockroaches and some rats as the place is dirty. Limited-no electricity during the daytime. Very bad value (RM180 Aircon room per night) would not recommend. Consider Abdul's Chalets: just down the beach very reasonable, clean, proper windows flooring bathroom etc.

Myself and a large group of friends stayed at these bungalows. Ms Lee couldn't have been any friendlier or accommodating and we were all arriving at different days and times and Ms Lee organised transfers to and from the airport.

The bungalows are basic but clean with v comfy beds, we all had a/c, a fan and hot showers and the bungalows are tucked just behind the beach.

There is a convenience store v v close by and restaurants too.

If you love a massage please look no further as Rohzlan was the kindest loveliest man who offered full body massages, foot reflexology and treatment massage on the beach! I recommended him to my friends who also felt relaxed around him and would recommend him. He can be contacted via Ms Lee.

I would definitely recommend these bungalows as a v good budget hidden gem!

We went to Jeti Kuala Besut without any proper plans or bookings. We are even confused to choose between Perhentian Besar OR Perhentian Kecil. While doing some shopping at local mart before deciding anything, we had this chit chat with a local trader named Mek Peng who advised us to stay at D'Ayummni House. She really did a great review and we are hooked by that.

She even gave us Ms. Lee contact number and we immediately called Ms. Lee for confirmation if there is any room left. Luckily, we went there during low season and D'Ayumni House still have few types of vacant rooms.

Upon arrival, we are amazed by the location of D'Ayumni House. It just right behind Universal Divers & Seahorse Divers counter and less than 20 meter walking from the small jetty and beach. It may not directly facing the beach but that better than walking few 100 meters or climbing stairs with luggage.

We are showed to different type of rooms and later choose Double Fan Chalet cost RM80/night. The room is clean & the toilet is clean. Ms. Lee was also being helpful host and directly arranged for our snorkeling trip and it only cost us RM40/pax including snorkeling gear.

D'Ayumni House has an open kitchen concept. We are given permission to use the kitchen at any time. We boiled hot waters for breakfast and supper and even cooked our lunch ourselves using provided ingredients. (We went for fishing trip and managed to catch some fish!)

Please be advised that electricity will only available at 6 pm to 8 am. But we didnt find that difficult as we are doing outdoor activities during day time.

Free WiFi is available and we are leisurely updated FB and Instagram during our stay.

Thank you Ms. Lee for the hospitality!
