My sixth holiday in glorious Perhentian Island Malaysia at The Reef, in kampong style wooden chalet, with AC, in garden. Kitchen with frig for preparing meals and snacks. Hot and filtered water on tap. 50m from warm clear tropical sea. Great snorkeling nearby and on the trips with Awe the boatman who knows the best spots for turtles, reef sharks, schools of bright fish, purple anemones, clown fish etc. Kayaking. Safe swimming for all ages and abilities. Lots of nearby places for icy fruit drinks, freshly caught fish for BBQ, Malay dishes, on the beach. Very affordable. Charming and gracious hosts Rashida and Kader. So peaceful, beautiful, altogether wonderful!

Reef Chalet offers gloriously simple Malay-style accommodation right on the beach and looking out onto a beautiful garden. There are beautiful fish and corals to explore - another world entirely. Eat dinner by the water with a gentle breeze and glorious sunset at one of the numerous nearby beach restaurants. The jungle looms behind. I especially like how the Reef Chalets support the local population, the simplicity of the accommodation and communing with tropical fish and the local wildlife.

There are so many things I love about The Reef Chalets - the rooms are well kept and have all the amenities that one needs, hooks, mosquito net, a proper night reading lamp, comfy bed and clean sheets, a balcony with a table and chairs that look out into the gorgeous center garden and the sea just ahead and the staff are incredibly warm and helpful, getting your boats and trips sorted, giving you anything that you might need [extension cord, extra pillows etc etc.] and also ordering delicious food for breakfast or lunch from the village. Perhaps the most wonderful thing is how much space there is between the chalets - the Reef Chalets is uncrowded with a small number of wooden, Malay kampung style chalets, and they all face a big garden with a magical sea almond tree in the center, and plenty of other fruiting trees, palms and bushes. Given how incredibly verdant and green the grounds of the Reef Chalets are, there are so many sightings of the beautiful dusky leaf monkeys, the amazing colugo [a species of flying fox I think], fruit bats [they live in back garden of the Reef Chalets], monitor lizards, pied imperial pigeons, orioles, sunbirds, many squirrels and the list goes on. They also have several hammocks hung up in the garden and next to the sea, so one could spend the entire day reading and chillaxing and not doing much else - or get active and hire a couple of kayaks and snorkelling equipment from the Reef Chalet office and head out to explore the gorgeous fauna and flora all around the Big and Small islands. Then, there's Awie, the Reef Chalet all-rounder staff who does loads of things, including taking guests out on magnificent snorkelling trips - he's facilitated many an incredible encounters with sharks, bumphead wrasse, blue spotted rays, clown fish & their sea anemone homes, countless schools of tiny and big fish, and consistently Awie will take us to a spot where we can hang out with the beautiful green turtles that live around the two islands. He's also super supportive of fearful non-swimmers and gently guides them to overcome their fears and see loads of fish and corals. Finally, there's Kader and Rashidah, the owners of The Reef Chalets, who welcome guests whenever they're on the island, and make sure that you are comfortable and have your needs attended to.

Everything about the Reef is captivating. The accommodating and knowledgeable staff can take guests on snorkelling trips and fishing trips. My husband caught three big mahi-mahi on a half day fishing trip and those of us who went snorkelling saw sharks and an array of other fish as well as gorgeous corals. Swimming with the turtles is a delight always to be remembered. Although The Reef does not have food and beverages, there are several resorts nearby that do and there is a variety of food choices. The jungle garden of The Reef's landscape invites the dusky leaf monkeys with their cute white faces to roam, and there is a flying fox that often hangs out in the trees as well. The Reef is so serene I was happy to sit out on the front porch of my veranda and stare at the beautiful ocean for hours.

This place is incredibly expensive (more than 300 RM, as many other hotels in the area) for the service and conditions of rooms. The rooms needs urgent renovation: mosquito nets (it is full of mosquitos), cleaning, new matresses, clean towels, and new forniture (beds are broken). Cleaning is very very poor, and the beach in front is totally unaccessible for swimming, and forthermore the dirty water from toilets and washing or other use, are going directly on the beach in a terrible smelly little river just in front of the rooms. At the same price I highly suggest to consider other hotel in the same area.

The Reef Chalet on Pulau Perhentian Besar (Big Island) houses simple no frills cozy chalets close to the beach front. Hot water for showering, aircond, fan, mosquito net, towels & soap are provided. For drinking hot water, one will need to go to reception to obtain as there are no mini fridge or electric kettle provided. 3 pin plug points are sufficient for 2 pax staying. My friend and I were on a short 4 day3night stay as we’re out in the sea most of the 3days due to my friend’s open water swimming clinic event. Big island will be more for honeymooners or family as food & beverage choices are limited. Barat is next door serves beer & awesome Bbq & western food. Mama’s chalet next to Barat serves thumbs up Italian coffee. The beach in front has plenty of fishes and sea cucumber & is shallow for kids. It is recommended to walk about 10min to the back and swim at PIR beach. There’s a snorkelling place in front of PIR which have alot of bleached corals but so where a young black tip shark was spotted during the ows clinic. Becareful & do not step on the corals as corals are living creatures formed over decades. To reach Reef Chalet, Barat,Mama’s chalet, one will be dropped off at the floating jetty to walk about 50mtrs to beach. Dusky spectacle monkeys can also be spotted at the Reef chalet. Just be wary of your food and stuff. Do not try to feed them as this is against their natural diet and they will turn aggressive in long run. In summary, the big island is a chill out island. Fret not, there is a small shop selling tidbits, mineral water, beer , simple toiletries next to Reef chalet. Breakfast is not included at the Reef.

At first. I really do understand that the situation about Covid-19 is difficult. For everybody. Because of Covid restrictions in Malaysia in February 2020 the Reef challets had to cancel our accomodation. Of course. But they announced me that they cancellation policy says if I cancel the accommodation 14 days before it starts, they keep all money (I payed 50 %). When I protested very strongly, they ensured me that they will send all my money back. 2 months nothing happened. Then after my question they sent me a voucher for much lower money then I payed in advance (they lowered it for some handling fee - OK and for a taxes which they had to pay to the government - WTF? I payed them money including the taxes, right?). After my reccuring protests they sent me email, that I will get all money back. That is about 3 months and still nothing. Don´t go there, don´t support this bad behaviour. They used my money for solving their economic situation without giving anything back.

We stayed 4 nights here with friends and had the best time. Simple, clean, casual. It was also a great location, very chill, good and cheap food options around. We did a bit of snorkeling just off the beach and saw a turtle! We would most definitely come back here!

Amazing guys right on the beach. No frills. We stayed in the family room- number 12. Will be back for sure. Nice honest staff. Great location to walk over the bridge to the other beach for snorkelling or you can also snorkel right on this beach. Good places to eat near by. Hidden gem!

We booked the air con / hot shower chalet directly through the hotel. Communication was great with the hotel since the beginning, since they organised the taxi and boat trip return from Kota Bahru airport. Setting is just amazing, right in front of the beach and the jetty, surrounded by a lovely garden. The chalet itself is straight forward, we found the bed was great, the room was quiet and there was a lovely terrace where you could have breakfast ( there is no breakfast option at the chalet, but you have Belinda's cafe next door, and minimarkts nearby ) . We loved the location of the Reef. The beach might not be the prettiest in Besar, but for us it was important to be close to dining / eating / shopping option and you could easily book a water taxi to get around or even walk.
