You have to get off at the Barat station pier and walk pass the Barat resort to get to Mama. And no real beach for Mama but you have your own beach chair under the trees which is very nice also. I took a nap one time but please aware of mosquitoes so do not forget to bring the spray and sunscreen too.

Moreover, it's very convenient to go to the Perhentian beach by walking, no need for water taxi. And from there you can hike in the jungle to another beach, floral bay with less than 30 minutes. And at Perhentian Island Resort (PIR) beach you can snorkel and see turtles, big blue fish and nice coral.

What I love most here is the people, they are very nice, calm, friendly and helpful. The food at the restaurant is good, local food and reasonable price. They have boat service, day trip, rental. On the last day, my boyfriend got some food poison and we did not even tell anyone but one guy noticed that my bf was not so well. He came and recommended some medicine and it helped a lot. So we survived quite ok on the bus back home.

You have to bring your own shampoo, shower gel and tissue paper, if not you can buy at the resort also. And for drinking water, you can buy here also and it's the cheapest compare to other resort or minimart.

BTW, If you want something fancy you can eat at the Barat bear by is also some nice BBQ dinner and a bit fancy lunch but very recommended.

The bungalow is wooden and a bit old but good maintenance. The air-con works well but cut every 6 hours. During the day maybe too hot to stay in the bungalow but we enjoy being outside anyway. There are so many things to do. Going to turtle bay for some nice swimming with the big wave, to long beach for some nice cafe and fancy restaurant. Again you can hike to the windmill point, less than 30 mins and the view from there is very worth the journey.

When arriving on Pulau Perhentian Bear (Big Perhentian Island) it was so friendly and welcoming to us. Mr Aziz is organizing everything for you and the most important for him is to make you happy! Mission accomplished!

There are different types of chalets. We were staying at the most basic one, equipped with a fan only, the wooden chalet, although a bit old, was well maintained. It is highly recommended to bring or use mosquito repellent :-)

Mamas Chalet brings also Mamas Restaurant with BBQ! It was really delicious and a pleasure being here!

We just rocked up without a reservation and Jimmy greeted us and was very helpful. We booked a chalet for 3 nights, basic amenities but clean and tidy. Close to restaurants and jetty but we only ate at Mama’s restaurant because the food was always nice and reasonably priced. Staff friendly, we got great service from Jura, Jimmy, Wanee and Amira! We booked all our snorkelling trips direct with Mama’s but you could also just walk to local snorkelling spots where you can spot turtles, sharks & sting rays. They looked after us and we had a great stay.

If you need to get a boat from Besar to your next destination on Redang Island, there are a couple of different prices you can pay.. The water taxi services on the beach at perhentian island resort will charge 300RM for two persons on a small boat, 400RM for a bit bigger and then 500RM + for a bigger charter boat to Redang. The best price is at Mama's Place. Go and see Mr Aziz there and he'll help you out and arrange a transfer to Redang no problems and also for half of the price (only 90RM per person if he can get a group together, which most of the time I think he does). Make sure you go and see him a day in advance. The transfer was great, but be cautious if you have a bad back as all of the speed boat transfers are pretty rough and bumpy.

We stayed in one of Mama's chalets (2 x adults and 2 x children) with a sea view and a deck at the front for sitting and chilling. The room had two double beds, one bathroom with a shower and toilet in the same space. The accommodation is basic but that is Perhentian, don't expect to much unless you pay big bucks. They have their own restaurant which cooks up a great fish selection every night and the staff are friendly. they also have their own boat service to taxi you about or go to the mainland, and that's well worth using to get you to the more secluded beaches. The accommodation on the island is pretty much all the same so if you are happy with the price then maybe consider these guys as they are a local family that have been doing this for years, they are kind, happy and really friendly.

Mama's Chalet is one of the best quality/price ratio places to stay in on Perhentian island besar. There are other resorts but I feel that for the price, Mama's Chalet is the most convenient and affordable. The rooms are basic (we had one with the aircond although there is no electricity between 12pm and 7pm) but this is all you need anyway when you're off to the beach, snorkelling, or diving during the day. What impressed us was the food at the restaurant which was very good for island food and very affordable. Portions were not too small. The view is very nice but if you take a walk along the beach you'll find nicer places to go swimming or snorkel by yourself.

We went to the Turtle Bay Divers diving centre, which was fabulous: run by very friendly people at an affodable price, and a really great experience. Will definitely come back there!

Overall, Mama's Chalet is really one of the good areas to stay at because it is fairly quiet, the food is good, the rooms are clean, and you have a nice view. What's more to ask for!

I stayed at Mama's Chalet in July 2014 with my 14-year-old daughter for 6 days. We rented a garden view cabin (70RM) with a fan. The cabin was basic but clean and comfortable, we loved the balcony. The fan worked just fine with us, no need for A/C (you gradually get used to the heat and don't move too much not to sweat more haha). Electricity goes out noon-3pm (no fan or wi-fi during those hours), but again, you're at the seaside so you can and should spend that time outdoors on the beach somewhere. Wi-fi is cheap (5RM for 2h, 10RM for 5h), worked well everywhere, in cabin too. Staff very helpful. Their restaurant serves delicious pancakes and fruit salad for breakfast. Restaurant (food) ok, but we got used to using the one of Coral View Resort in the north, so can't really say much about their restaurant.
The beach in front of this resort (and all other neigbour resorts to the north) is nothing special, noone swam there, but the best beach (in the north in front of Coral View resort) is very easily accessible only cca 300m away.
I highly recommend this resort.

Own by local, a stay here would allow you to experience the local lifestyle. I stayed in a fan chalet. The wooden chalet, although a bit old, was well maintained. The bathroom was spacious nevertheless, towels provided but not toiletries, so if you plan to stay here, bring your own toiletries and toilet paper.

The fan chalet was unbearably hot during the day, so I seek refuge under the row of trees at the beachfront. The trees were shady and surprisingly cooling under their shade. The sand at the beachfront was cleaned daily to remove excessive dry leaves and other debris. The hot chalet also led us to spend more time on outdoor activities. Night time, the chalet would cool down when the windows were opened, and we relied on mosquito coil to repel mosquito attack, and it worked.

There was a restaurant and reception cum water taxi station at the northern side of the chalet. The restaurant served both local and Western food of average quality. However do try out the seafood BBQ for dinner; I had very well grilled squid and prawns, and came with delicious sauces with a twist of local recipe of spices, rice, sauted vegetable and few slices of fruits.

Other attractions were very accessible from here, for it was at the centre of these attractions such as PIR beach (by foot and water taxi), Teluk Keke (by foot and water taxi), Long Beach (by water taxi) and local village (by water taxi). I was happy with the local style lodging experience of staying here, and among the local family who ran the resort.

The rooms are simple but clean. No hot water even in the "deluxe room". Snorkelling gear to rent for cheap.
Not the best beach but some nice ones nearby
The stay was okay but we found better for a smaller price elsewhere.

When you book a room by email, you have to pay for the boat transfer as well, which is okay. But Mama's holidays insisted to make us book the transfer from the jetty to the airport. They added it on the bill before we said yes. You have to pay for the whole van whatever the number of people, so we booked and paid a taxi (75MYR) for 2 people. Once there, other costumers asked to take a taxi via Mama's to the airport and the staff acted as if they didn't understand English and called another taxi as soon as possible to make sure that we could not share ours even if there was still plenty of room. Not very honest

We paid €20 per night for a garden view bungalow with fan. The bungalow needed some improvements, the sink leaked and the toilet to but everything was clean and we had our own terrace to sit and watch the sea between the trees. Next our bungalow some construction works we're going on between 8:30 and 17:00 but we were all day at sea did we had no problem with that. Staff is friendly and restaurants in a few minutes walking distance. For us we got value for money.
