Perhentian Tuna Bay Island Resort is located on the south west coast of Pulau Perhentian Besar (Big Island), a quiet, untouched part of the island surrounded by tropical jungle, on a broad expanse of powdery white sand. The resort commands a breathtaking view of Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Island) and the South China Sea, right on your doorstep. All chalets are just a minute's walk from the beach and are tastefully built with wooden furnish.

The worst hotel in Malasya. We could not sleep all the nights because there are generators next to the rooms. The noise is so loud. The staff never try to give any option and a good holiday was horrible. I advise you dont book it if you want a relax holidays.

I booked a massage at Tuna Bay at 7 pm, I arrived 10 minutes earlier. The lady doing the massage informed me that I will start in 5 minutes. Then at 7 pm o'clock a guy working there informed me that I have to wait for 20 minutes and he said that they didn't have my phone number to contact me before I arrive while I booked through WhatsApp so they have my number. I told him that I arrived before my appointment and I can't wait. So he did not even say a word and I left without any apologies from their end. This was very disrespectful toward customers. Even though it is only 20 minutes delay but this will prevent me from joining my famiy at the agreed time.

Really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely return. We stayed 3 nights but will be more next time. You are right on the beach and it's great for snorkeling over the coral. The rooms are basic but clean. The staff are friendly and welcoming with the exception of one. Very easy to get to the small island if you want more nightlife.

The setting is amazing and the diving excellent. The snorkeling right in front of the lodge beach was teeming with a large variety of species. Food in the restaurant was outstanding. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms adequate but suggest going for sea view as we were stuck in a room in the back corner of the lodge which was near the generator.

Goodness! Went from our hotel by boat over to tuna Bay. It was very busy on the beach but we were looking for an early dinner with the kids. The waiter was so rude! Lots if food not avaliable. Our sons dinner never came. They were even rude when we came to pay the bill. You would think it was an inconvenience to give them money! Nice location but food pretty rubbish and you don't go out to be treated so badly!

We stayed at the Tuna Bay for 6 nights and will definitely go back again. You can trust the website, it is entirely honest and the rooms are just like the pictures. It is a small family run business and from the moment you arrive at the office in Kuala Besut where Jimmy greets you and arranges parking (if reqd) boat trip etc, to the moment you leave, they are all smiles and nothing seems too much trouble. There are one or two shortcomings, more than compensated for by everything else (e.g. no tea/coffe facilities in room, no pool). They had a little bit of a staff shrotage while we were there, as a couple of the maids were off sick, so we had to request to have room made up or do it ourselves - no big deal. Do make sure that if you are going to sit on the veranda early morning or in the evening, you burn a mosquito coil (available from the shops along the beach). The rooms are simple, but clean and comfortable. One major advantage is the it is one of the few places with 24 hour electricity, by virtue of its own generator.

The rooms are comfortable and clean, the staff extremely friendly and the location is excellent. The small reef right in front of the hotel beach is great for snorkelling and you will see a great deal of marine life there, we even saw a giant turtle just a few metres off the beach. At 6pm Rujis (the maintenance man) feeds the fish on the beach and will welcome you to join him, this is not to be missed, especially for the kids!

You can take a range of trips, Jungle Trekking or Snorkelling and a visit to the Turtle Hatchery is a must (at the right time of year! Jun-Sep). Tuna Bay has an arrangement with the Marine Park that they can land there for a donation to the trust and the old guard, who lives there, gets the turtles out of the sand for you to hold. For the more adventurous there are a number of PADI dive schools on the island and you can do novice to open water in 4 days for RM800 (around £120) gear included. The hotel and beach shops rent out snorkelling gear for around RM10 or 15 (£1.50-2) per day.

Don't feel that you need to restrict yourself to the hotel restaurant, there are a number of places to eat, depending on taste, Cafe Nia (shack on beach next to hotel) serves great food, their squid & chips and fish & chips are highly recommended! They also run a snorkelling trip from the cafe RM 25 (£3) per person 2.5-3 hours we saw giant turtles, Napoleon Rass, Reef Sharks and a host of other stuff, too numerous to mention.

Mid-September, I sent 5 nights in a super deluxe sea view chalet (1A). This simple bedroom with fan and air conditioning was the most expensive of this hotel but you have a terrace with three sunbeds and a table and two chairs. This means you don't have any problems to find a sunbed on the beach (50 sunbeds without mattress for the whole hotel). As toiletries, they provide two soaps and two small bottles of shampoo throughout your stay. Fresh beach towels are also provided. There is a digital safe in the room but no kettle, no television or no hair dryer. You receive two small bottles of water daily. Don't forget to put the sign "make up the room" if you want that your room is cleaned otherwise they don’t clean your room.

The food at the breakfast buffet is average : one juice, water, tea, coffee, white bread, whole meal bread, egg station, fruit (melon, pineapple, watermelon), salad bar, apple rolls OR croissant, five hot dishes (noodle or rice + e.g. Canai roti, pancake, hash brown, french toast, beef bacon, potato wedges, baked beans, waffles, chicken sausage). It can take a long time before they refill the food. They clear the table only when you leave the restaurant.

You don't have a lot of choice if you want to eat near the resort: a burger stand, the restaurant of the hotel and two other resort restaurants.

You have the choice between Asian and Continental dishes at their restaurant and their prices are not too expensive for an island : homemade soup (14 RM), salad (15 RM - 21 RM), sandwich and burger (18 RM - 26 RM), pasta (10 - 24 RM), fish and chips (22 RM), chicken cordon bleu (35 RM), noodle (16 RM - 22 RM), fried rice (12 RM - 16 RM), stir fired vegetable (13 RM), beef (22 RM - 28 RM), omelet : 10 RM, lobster : 25 RM per 100 gr, tiger prawn : 18 RM per 100 gr, tropical fish : 8 RM per 100 gr, grilled chicken satay : 26 RM, grilled New Zealand T-bone steak : 50 RM, fillet of red snapper : 30 RM, seasonal fruits platter : 12 RM, homemade tiramisu : 16 RM. Soft drinks (canned) : 4 RM, drinking water 1,5 l : 3 RM, fresh juices : 12 RM, smoothie : 14 RM, tiger beer : 10 RM. All prices are subject to 6% GST.

The Wi-Fi is only available at the reception and the signal is not always very good. What we did, we bought a card of 5 RM for two days at the grocery and the connection was far better but you have to be near the grocery.

Prices for a taxi boat from Tunabay for the Big Island (per person before 7 pm) :
- The Barat, Mama’s place, KK beach, the Reef: 5 RM
- Coral View: 7 RM
- Turtle Beach, Flora Bay, Fauna Bay: 15 RM
- Samudera, Arwana: 20 RM
- Spring water, Bubbles: 25 RM
- Quite Beach: 30 RM

Prices for a taxi boat from Tunabay for the Small Island (per person before 7 pm) :
- Village: 5 RM
- Petani Beach: 10 RM
- Long Beach: 15 RM
- Sandy Coral, Mira Beach: 15 RM
- D’Lagoon : 20 RM
- Romantic Beach: 25 RM
- Coral Bay: 20 RM
- Rawa Beach: 40 RM

Some practical information
Upon arrival you receive a welcome drink and they ask you to pay your bedroom but they don't charge any fee if you pay with your credit card.
- The hotel has organized my transfer from Kota Bharu airport to the resort. From the airport to the small fishing town of Kuala Besul (60 km - 50 minutes), we were in a minivan with 5 other guests. They dropped us at their office in Kuala Besul where you have to fill in their documents to have your bedroom. You walked a few minutes to go to the jetty to have the boat. The crossing took 45 minutes.
- Check out: 11:30 – Check in: 2 pm.
- This part of the Perhentians Island has powdery white sand and turquoise blue sea. You can think that you are in the Seychelles with the rocks along the beach. I advise you to go to the Perhentians Island resort at the other side of the island at low tide along the beach or by the jungle trekking (30 minutes).
- The jungle trekking (5.8 km) leaves from Cozy Chalets and has 3 parts. First part from Cozy Chalets to Turtle Divers (easy - average). Second part from Perhentians Island Resort to the Flora Bay (easy – average). Third part from the Flora Bay to the hotel (difficult – I advise you to take a boat from the Flora Bay to Tunabay resort = 15 RM per person).
- This is a fantastic place for snorkeling because the house reef is just a minute’s walk from your room and there are thousands of fish! You can also make 3 excursions with the hotel (Rawa Island = 60 RM + GST 6 %).
- The weather was beautiful (34 degrees during the day, 29 degrees at night and 31 degrees in the sea).
- We had no mosquitoes during our stay.
- There is a small grocery near the resort (chips, bread, medication, mosquito repellent, sun lotion, plastic mattress, waterproof bags...)
- In the burger stand with tables, you can eat burgers (4-10 RM) and drink a fresh juice for 6 RM.
- For the taxi from Kuala Besut to the airport, the price is 75 RM but when you arrive at the jetty you can have a minivan with other people and you pay 25 RM/pax. I booked my transfer with the hotel and I was in a minivan but I paid the price of a taxi.
- Laundry: 8 RM per kilo.
- They are closed from 1st November until 31th January.

I will return to this resort with its 46 wooden chalet.

That's right Kota Bharu is the nearest airport. Then the resort will pick you up from the airport and drive you to the port. Then they take you on a boat to the resort. It is all organised and very easy. Just make sure you organise this transfer with the resort.
