Watercolours Resort is truly unforgettable. Never have I stayed in such a place, and probably never will again.

The dank rooms will truly tickle your senses. The romantic lighting sets the mood, illuminating the room like a single burning candle (but truly, the room looks best in the dark). Then there's that haunting scent. I thought at first it was the smell of unwashed linen but it turned out to be the mattress and pillows, and its scent will linger on to you and your clothes (I should know cos I put my baby's blankie on it).

The loo will give you a workout as you pump and pump to get flushing (it works but it needs some effort). After you work up a sweat flushing the loo, rejuvenate yourself with that icy cold shower!

Best of all is the housekeeping. They are practically invisible and your garbage just lounges nonchantly in the corner. Of course, when you're travelling with a baby, one just can't keep soiled diapers in the room for long without the risk of death by toxic asphyxiation.

We, and the room next to us that also had several young children, had no choice but to neatly tie up our garbage and leave it outside the rooms, by the garden. They keep the garden very tidy by the way, there's someone sweeping the leaves daily. Our garbage bags though, were mysteriously untouched.

An added highlight is the breathtaking shallow graveyard of a beach the resort has. The beach is filled with lovely dead coral, both in and out of the water, eager for you to step on them and wince in pain.

Ahhhh, the masochist in me was delighted by the experience! If hygiene is not a big deal to you, then you have found paradise.

On a more serious note, the saving grace was its dive center. The dive masters were informative and friendly, and we were happy with the diving/ snorkelling spots we were taken to.

We were travelling with a group of friends that brought their respective families. We had taken the full board package which includes food and drink, which was plentiful and decent enough. The staff were also quite friendly.

I've read that it's supposedly the same living condition throughout the island. If so, then you might as well go budget. But to be honest, we passed by other resorts and they didn't look as shabby so maybe this story is to convince you to give this place a shot.

Well I contacted the person in charge in FB saying that the room ranging from RM 100 to 150, and the price was different due to the distance from the beach to the chalet. All the rooms were newly renovated and come with 2 queen-size beds, attached bathroom and air conditional. That's why we picked the room of RM100 because our group would not mind the walking distance but the room condition. However, when we reached there, the room wasn't as expected as in the photo shown. Instead, it was pretty old and one of the bathroom wasn't attached. We were pretty disappointing with this because we felt cheated. We were thinking if there is any mistake in management, they mistakenly treated us as another smaller group, with different request from what I have made. Anyhow, the staff were pretty pleasant and patient. Bread was also available all-day-long. It is good solely for the price.

Have been visiting this resort since the 90's, it was one of the best budget resort in the whole of Perhentian, strategically located with stunning views and easy accessible to Teluk Pauh area. The dive centre still provides excellent services and diving with them is a pleasure. However, the rooms really in dire need of restoration, no upkeeping work done on the room and some of it has been infested with termites. The introduction of all day long electricity is welcomed, air-cond in room is welcomed, but they should at least provide a single powerpoint for charging in current technology trend. I will still go back to the resort due to the sentimental memories I have with this resort, but do hope that restoration is done is stages to maintain the facilities.

Although they just opened, Impiani makes sure they treat you well. They give A+ personal service to make sure your stay is as good as possible. The resort is on a beautiful quiet beach and so you get that 'out of the way' feeling. You can still do all the scuba diving and snorkelling and jungle trekking, but stay without the hoards of people that you can get on some other beaches. The rooms are beautfiul, with balcony and jungle setting. Ours was directly facing the beach and had hot water shower. Meals are very good standard - and on some nights they put tables on the beach for a moonlight bbq! Fantastic. Although not perfect - they are just getting going - i would recommend this place to anyone who wants to stay at a small resort with a personal touch in the most beautiful setting i have ever seen.

I have Just returned from a 10 day holiday at the Watercolours Impiani Resort, Perhentian Islands, Malaysia and would just like to say it was a holiday from hell. I don't normaly write on web sites like this, but feel the need to warn fellow travellers about Watercolours and this resort. These were our experiences.

Speedboat transfer
The transfer to the islands takes about 30 minutes, but the boats DO NOT leave the mainland untill they are full, which could mean a wait of up to 1 hour in the blistering heat.

The Impiani Resort
Located on the edge of the jungle on the smaller island of Perhentian Kecil, the resort is quite run-down and un-cared for. Our garden room was dirty, basic and spoilt by the building materials scattered throughout the grounds.
To get to many of the rooms you have to navigate uneven, poorly lit, rotting wooden walkways, this was very dangerous and I would advise a torch.

Food and Staff
The food from the menu was very good and the beach BBQ was fantastic, but we got the impression that the staff were fighting a losing battle as the management are not present on site.

Hot water and electricity
We were astonished to discover that despite being advertised as their Deluxe Resort, the electricity is turned off daily at 8:30am and only comes back on at 6:30pm. This was very annoying as there was nowhere to go to escape the daily heat and humidity.
We were later informed that the 'backpacker resort' on paradise Island had electricity 24 hrs per day.
I also need to point out that only the 5 Beach rooms have hot running water, with everyone else having to shower in the freezing cold water that is pumped from the stream.

Rats
Once or twice were we woken in the night by visitors in our room. These were large rats who find their way in via the many holes in the poorly maintained rooms. When we mentioned this to the management, we were told (with a smirk) that they were simply 'jungle mice'. This lack of regard led to other guests (friends of ours) cutting their stay short and moving to more caring resorts (Tuna Bay and Flora Bay).
We also had a badly leaking when it rained (as it often does), our bedding and clothes got soaking wet.

Diving and Snorkeling
Although the Watercolours dive school (located on the other island) is gererally very good, and staff are great, the diving was less than impressive. With very poor visabilty(5m), minimum coral growth, limited fish life and despite their policy of 'fish not fins 'the dives were overcrowded with divers. They also took us to the dive sites that suited them, not where we wanted to go.
We only lasted a few dives before moving to Tuna Bay Divers, where we were treated much better.
One of the things we looked forward to, and is normally a highlight of our holidays was the snorkelling. Although the sea at the front of Impiani is quite shallow, all the coral is dead and consequentially there are virtually no reef fish to see (the occasional shark yes). We were also plagued by swarms of jellyfish, who managed to sting many guests, keeping us out of the water.

Wildlife
Being a jungle resort, we knew that there would be an element of 'local wildlife' around, I must say that some of it was wonderful, big beautiful butterflies and giant gecko's. But needless to say that there are also quite a few nasties. Around our room we saw large hand sized spiders, cockroaches and poisonous snakes. Not to mention the swarms of mosquito's that ate us alive during our stay. These were a constant menace, and due to the high humidity and dampness of the jungle, were ever present.
We also had a resident water monitor lizard who scavenged in the bins outside our room, and although apparently friendly, was quite intimidating.

It is sad to say that for a resort set in such a beautiful place, the upkeep of the resort in general and the rooms in particular is sadly neglected.

We feel that the advertisement of this resort didn't live up to the reality. The blurb on the Watercolours website is quite misleading, and the images were obviously taken quite a long time ago, when the resort was enjoying 'better days'.
Don't be fooled! There are much nicer, cheaper and friendlier places to stay.

Good enough for simple accommodations for a diving trip. Staff was exceptionally friendly, rooms were adequate, service was timely, etc. All the other nearby resorts are much more expensive, and probably have better food and accommodations but I didn't want to spend that much money. I believe there are cheaper accommodations on Long Beach but there is a lot of noise from the bars and party scene there and I preferred the quietness of this beach. I would probably stay here again. I stayed over two weeks, then had to move because the whole place was booked up and I went next door which was similar but slightly more expensive. The food wasn't great but that was true for most of the restaurants on Perhentian Islands at this price point.

I was initially deterred by all the negative reviews but perhaps these people had unrealistic expectations - most places in the area have pretty bad western food, the Malay food isn't the best, and it is a generated power area so the aircon or power may not be consistent. I expect most of the problems people were having here would also be true at the other nearby resorts at similar price points. There are nearby places that are MUCH more expensive and I expect they would and should be at a higher standard, but haven't tried them.

The internet is absolutely terrible here, usually not working at all, but it was also terrible everywhere else in the area so it is important to consider the context when judging a particular place. I would sometimes take a boat to Long Beach where internet was slow but cheap and reliable and worked on the entire beach.

The diving center was nice, competent, and relaxed. They figured out which dive sites they would visit a day in advance based on how many divers were around, and if you have flexible time you can just show up and see if you want to go wherever they are going, and suggest areas you want to go. It was very relaxed and low cost. Prices go down with more dives, and you can keep a tab and pay if off when you leave. There were some sites I wanted to see on demand (without any uncertainty) in which case I went next door to Turtle Bay Divers and got the exact sites I wanted on the same day, but paid a slight premium for it.

After backpacking for many years around the world we decided to pay a little more for comfort travelling with a toddler. The accomodation was nowhere near the standard it should have been for the price. It resembled a lot of the cheapest rooms we could find in India. Some staff were overly friendly while others had no customer service skills whatsoever. Restaurant food was good but very slow and sometimes never turned up (very annoying when you have an early morning dive and want to eat first!).

I found the staff at watercolours very friendly and helpful. When we arrived on the island we didnt have a reservation. But the staff at watercolours welcomed us, found us a room and let us settle in and shower before we actually checked in. The chalet we had was a RM70 per night one, so thats what i'll be reviewing.
The chalet itself was ok.
But it did have its bad points:
Although the maid doesnt clean your room, she only does that when you check out in preperation for the next guest. (The maid is a very nice Malaysian called Irene, i think she's just doing as she's told though.) You'll find yourself constantly wiping sand from your bed and your floor will gradually collect sand from your feet.
The bed had fleas. Every morning we'd wake up with new bites. The electricity goes off at 9am and comes on again at about 6pm so there's no aircon/fan or internet between those times.
The resturaunt food is very good. But 80% of the stuff on the menu is not actually available to order. They never seem to have what you order in. So i stuck to coke, milo and coffee.
Alcohol is not allowed in the restraunt. I dont think you could buy it anywhere on the island for that matter.

All that aside i did actually enjoy my stay. A week was too long for me though, after 5 days on the island i was bored.

We stayed there for 2 weeks and it was very nice. The people working there are very helpful and the restaurant is good (an slightly overpriced too).
The location is not the best but it is ok to sleep.
Very clean.
Because is right next to the jungle we got lots of insects and little animals, but there is no way to change that! So be it!
Ah, our chalet had no electricity plugs.

My partner & I stayed at Watercolours Impiani on Pulau Perhentian Kecil last year. We had one of the forest chalets, which was superb with the exception of the bathroom, which was somewhat spartan but adequate. French doors onto a balcony in the forest with views of the sea through the trees provided a great place to relax at the end of the day.
The restaurant was great: excellent range of foods available & staff who were friendly, relaxed & professional. We stayed on a pre-bought package & were amazed to find we had the full run of the menu - could not resist having the lobster. Meal times virtually overlapped, and drinks (non-alcoholic) were available anytime. At night, geckos would appear from the light fittings & despatch any insects that may have bothered diners.
The snorkelling was excellent, with the staff being assiduous in trying to show us every possible diving spot. Whilst we were there, the water was not as clear as that we had found at Pulau Redang, however plenty of people have attested to its clarity, so we assume that we perhaps just picked a time when the water was not at its best.
Impani resort shares a small secluded cove with one other small resort, which we were told has a decent restaurant, but in our week stay we were more than content to eat at our restaurant.
The beach/cove is beautiful: a slice of paradise.
We spent a few short hours at the main strip on Perhentian Besar (the big island), which we found overcrowded & busy, but which would allow some 'nightlife' for anyone requiring that.
We would definitely recommend Watercolours Impiani to anyone wanting a relaxing way to absorb some Malaysian sand & sea. Great for couples or families & even older folk like us.
