There are no blankets/a sheet to cover yourself at night The window lets in barely any light No furniture aside from the bed Obviously no towels... I’d like to say the place is clean at least but it’s only surface level. The bathroom is mouldy, the doors are falling apart, the pillows are dirty (but the casings are fresh at least). This is a budget option so no wifi, aircon (there is a fan), electricity only from 7PM till 7am. The location is great, there is a nice common area with free hammocks. But at 120 per night (160 for seaview) at least give me a blanket, or warn in advance. The Perhentians are expensive in general but this is the worst standard on our trip so far and not the cheapest one at that...

Despite bad reviews at on Tripadvisor we had a look at Maya Chalets while staying on the island. Since the last review the majority of rooms and chalets have been completely renovated, additionally two new rooms have been built. The owner keeps going on improving the place. We enjoyed both the location (large garden, beach access, proximity to Anti Gravity divers - they share the garden) as also the accommodation. The host himself is also very warm welcoming and we where happy to call this place home for about 5 days.

Very poor accommodation. Most of the lights didn’t work, it was dirty, the sink just drained on to the bathroom floor so the floor was always wet. The only positive was I had a beach front room so the view from the balcony was good.

We stayed at Maya Chalet for a week in one of the sea-facing chalets. Maya is located in the middle of Coral Bay, so most places are easily accessible on foot. Coral Bay is a small place anyway. On the grounds, there was a beach volley ball court and a gazebo with a few hammocks in the middle courtyard. Anti-Gravity (a great dive centre) is situated just next door. Maya also has canoes that guests can rent. The sea-facing chalets (I counted 4) are right beside the beach and you get a very nice view from the verandah. As Coral Bay faces West, it is quick to dry your laundry too. The chalet comes with a bathroom with shower and toilet (cold shower only), a queen-sized bed with mosquito net and a fan. There's a nice verandah area to chill out. Electricity comes on only in the evenings from 7pm - 8am. You get a nice breeze if you open all the doors and windows. You need to bring your own toiletries, towels, toilet paper. While the location on the beach is great, the chalet is old, dirty and very basic. The bathroom was quite dirty with stains, our sink was not connected properly to the piping below, so every time you use it, water flows out onto the floor. On our first night there, we could not sleep because there was an all-night mosquito buffet going on, and we were the buffet spread. Mosquitos is more likely a problem on the island and is not specific to Maya. I bought mosquito coils the next day and we had no mosquito problems the subsequent nights. It would have been great if we were told about this upfront. In summary, this is a very basic accommodation in a great location that is in need of a refurbishment.

Please do yourself a favor and stay away from this place. It is very old, nothing works, mosquito infested, yucky pillows and mattress. It is just disgusting. We got the beach front bungalow and the only nice thing about it is the view.

Basic chalet on the beach but perfect for a solo/ couple of backpackers for a bit of privacy (double bed, own shower). Bathroom facilities are very basic but I think the bed is one of the most comfy I've ever slept in with memory foam (I think!) pillows...super comfy in any case. Right on the beach with a great dive school next door if you're into that too!

We spent 6 wonderful nights at Maya on beautiful Perhentian Kecil. The beachfront huts have seen better days but it's the location which, in my opinion, outweighs most of the negatives. Yes, these rooms are basic with a capital B and for MYR140 per night quite expensive. No bath towels or toilet roll is provided so be warned! However with views of the mainland from your balcony these huts are unrivalled for location. Senja Bay does have some huts close to the beach but Maya's 4 beachfront huts are the better for location. The owner is very friendly but spent most of his time in the gazebo out back mixing with the younger, traveller crowd. Maya has a lovely feel but if some money was spent on doing up the rooms people would enjoy their stay a lot more.

I stayed here for a couple of nights and really enjoyed it. The location is ideal on Coral Bay right on the beach next to bars and restaurants and dive shops. You can also get across to Long Beach on a 15 minute walk and get cheap boats over to other beaches around the Perhentian Islands. My room had a double bed with mosquito net and en suite bathroom with cold water shower and toilet. It was very basic but expected for the low price. I still found it very comfortable and not noisy like Long Beach. Staff were friendly and usually found in a hammock chilling at reception. You can stay in one of the garden view rooms or beach view rooms, or even a tent! Would recommend.

I went to Kecil for three days, but I spent a week instead; the islands, the people that I met and, above all, the great staff from Maya, made me enjoy every minute. The chalets are about to be restored and they need it, but it is also true that they are absolutely inexpensive and, in the end, you are paying for a safe place to stay in, which is what you get in terms of infrastructure. However, what isn't paid although it's the most valuable feature, is the chance to know and share time with the people who own and work there: they are superhelpful and experts in all kind of trips around, always willing to tell stories about the island and their lives, to go fishing with you or to cook a delicious traditional meal for all the guests just to celebrate that we are there. If I come back to the island, I will go there for sure!

We booked to stay here through a tour company and were massively overcharged for the privilege! When we arrived, we found the room to be filthy. A thick layer of brown dust and dirt over the fan a disgusting mosquito net and a horrible smell (somewhere between rotting wood and urine!). The key to the room was rusty and did not shut the door properly and the bathroom was tiny with the basin hanging off the wall. We were in a garden view room, the sea view rooms looked mildly better, but more expensive. We luckily got a full refund from the tour company, when we explained the situation fully. We were being charged 120RM per night for this, others who just turned up were asked for 70RM which is still too much for this room. In the end we moved to a 30RM beach hut a few doors down, still basic, but no smell, cleaner and a little nicer. My advise would be to not book before you arrive and check all rooms thoroughly before you pick a place to stay. Having looked a number of places and rooms along Coral Beach, Maya chalet would be at the bottom of my list.
