What is Travellers’ Choice?
Tripadvisor gives a Travellers’ Choice award to accommodations, attractions and restaurants that consistently earn great reviews from travellers and are ranked within the top 10% of properties on Tripadvisor.
Alunan Resort is the only contemporary resort on Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia with 24 spacious, double-story suites furnished with modern architecture. Covered in floor-to-ceiling glass panels designed to capture majestic views of the ocean and rain forest, each suite opens up to a private rooftop sun deck on the top floor where a hammock and sun loungers awaits. Due to the design of our resort which is built on a hill, there are many steps and stairs to consider. We apologize that we are not able to provide wheelchair access and our resort may not be suitable for senior citizens and children under the age of 12.
We came during June, with their Alunan Unlimited Package (includes all excursions, food and beverage, including alcohol). It seemed the beginning of tourist season - though busy, but the staff onsite were the most obliging and did their best to help! It seemed like they're familiar with one another- it wasn't just like a big chain resort, but rather a smaller team but everything done with lots of heart ❤️ Excursions were well done. Their crew who brought us put for snorkeling excursions were very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. It was clear that they were doing their best to show us around the reefs, and that they cared about reed conservation. Shootout to Dewan - he helped my 5yro to overcome her hesitance on snorkeling and brought her around to spot the various fishes and marine life in the different spots! Also a note that the snorkeling spots we went to were quite unspoiled by rubbish (unlike many other popular dive spots). Shootout to Hasni at the Bayu Restaurant who always welcomed us with a big smile and friendly face, and made the breakfast and lunch experience lovely. Italian restaurant (only available for dinner) was good, the seafood risotta and overall seafood was very fresh and nicely done. Only thing to note is that- this is an eco friendly resort, so they build around the topography of the island. The area is rather hilly, so there are A LOT of steps to climb, and its not quite accessibly. Not really recommended for those with movement restrictions. Otherwise, as a family, we had a lot of fun in the unspoiled nature there. Highly recommended!…

Loved it! Rooms basic but very functional and comfortable. Water pressure, hot water, toilets all check!! Feels like a 5 star treehouse! Food was average but you are not there to eat. Everything served was more then edible! Special mention to the sambal at breakfast for nasi lemak! The highlights are the fantastic family friendly activities all day! Morning, noon and night you have more then enough! Nothing like conservation minded people looking after you on your holiday! Marine Biologists snorkeling with everyone! Beautiful sea life everywhere, crystal clear water! Reef tip sharks, spotted stingrays, bat fish, schools of sardines right in front of you everyday. Highly recommend! Big thank you and another special mention to the owners who were very friendly and accommodating! Miss the gorgeous ocean and the staff most of all! Highly recommended! …

Awesome resort. The employees were extremely friendly and helpful. Our room had an astonishing sea view and it was very quite. Many thanks to Brandon, who spontaneously organised a firework after our romantic engagement dinner, which made it even more special. The food at the mediterranean Restaurant was just delicious. Especially the bruschetta and the salmon penne. We highly recommend this hotel.

5 stars for the services provided by the hotel staff. We took Unlimited Package and we really enjoyed the foods! It was superb! I can order anything from the menu and all are inclusive in the package. The snorkeling activity also was great! Staff are knowledgeable about the marines life. They put guest’s priority at the top! Hats off!!! We also tried cliff jumping where no other hotel provide this in their package! Now Alunan is officially in our “must repeat” hotel list.. congrats to all Alunan staff! Take care and continue to deliver the best for all your guest..

We love it there! That's for sure. It is a little bit pricey but hey it is not you are going there every week or every month! The staff is friendly and nice. The food is delicious. The service is not bad at all. What we enjoy the most is the Redang Trip! We love the room. Its clean and nice. One suggestion though for the room. The room still have a space for single sofa or two with small coffee table to enjoy the coffee in the morning. That would be perfect!

I visited Alunan Resort to kickoff my birthday trip to Malaysia and, my friends, it did not disappoint! I don't usually write reviews, so bear with me as I relay my stories instead. If you're planning a trip to Malaysia, here are some reasons why you should start (or end) it in the Perhentian Islands, particularly at Alunan Resort. 1. Location. They have a comprehensive guide on their website on how to get to the resort, but if you're flying to Kota Bharu airport like me, you're an hour away from their Kuala Besut office, give or take depending on the traffic. From there, you don't have to worry because the front office team will take care of you and your transfer to the island. Which I will write about in the next point. The area is very peaceful. Yuu have to note there won't be any night life in this side of the island. There will be a bar near the beach that opens late but that's about it. 2. Customer service. I could not stress this enough. The people that work there made it a breeze for me and I assume for everybody else who visits the place. The reception was topnotch— from inquiry up until the minute I left the office for my flight back to KL. Everybody made sure I had the best stay and I believe they deserve a shout. I'll mention them below but it's quite long. You can skip this and go to point 3. When I was still planning for this trip, I had gazillion inquiries. But they did not remain unanswered for long because they were responsive no matter which line of communication you use. They were kind enough to pass on some requests to the concerned department. They were generous to accommodate even my seemingly odd requirements for a room. It wasn't like the unicorn, but they didn't say no outright either, and tried. This was Jenny to me via IG. I ended up getting Room 22 and it was perfect! The seaview from the room, the balcony, the privacy it gives albeit the distance from the amenities and the restaurants were what I exactly wanted. The pictures you see on their site show you what you get, if not better. It's an eco-friendly resort so they have their own reef-safe hair and body wash, which I thought was cool. I loved the scent and the ultimate purpose, of course. The resort has an office at the Main Land (as they call it). There you will have an initial orientation. While technically, you're limited to only what the islands can offer, you can get tips on what not to miss. Surely locals know best, eh? Shirley, who heads the Kuala Besut office, gave me awesome suggestions, alongside Ila, who was equally informative. Alunan has their own pontoon on the island. I guess they're the only ones in the island that have it. I believe that's a great reassurance you won't get wet, at least before you plan to anyway, upon arrival and keep your OOTD still picture-ready. Rizwan, who is part of the Resort's front team, happily welcomed me and proactively carried a 15-kg luggage up to the lobby. I'd be honest, I am not one to expect it just because I paid for a high-end resort, so I might be praising something that should be normal, I understand that, but to carry that heavy of a luggage up to the lobby? Man, I was grateful. I insisted on having it wheeled but he refused. Sweet. The weather wasn't perfect when I arrived. Most mornings it would rain a little. Because of that, I was not able to experience some of the excursions that were part of the package I paid for. I was feeling a little bummed. I missed the Best of Perhentian trip and the two Sunset Wonders were also a disappointment because the afternoons were cloudy. I mentioned it in passing and the front team picked up on it. I asked if they'd like to go to the neighbouring beach after work, all expenses on me, and the team gladly considered. Rizuan and Yan, who weren't really responsible for what happened, felt accountable for how my trip went. Bless their hearts. To compensate, they took me to the Fisherman's Village. I wanted the Long Beach, but the weather then wasn't cooperating either and I understood and didn't want to risk it. Trust me, they tried hard. They contacted a lot of water taxis and calculated the risk because they honestly wanted to give me what I wanted for my last night, which was crazy knowing this was already beyond their job and work hours. This just goes to show they were quite committed and trained to give excellent customer service. They made up for it, for which I am truly grateful for. We stayed up until 2AM. I enjoyed their stories. 3. Alunan Unlimited. This is what made the stay worth it for me. The restaurants serve amazing food. I'll confess I went back to eating meat after being a pescatarian for years. I wanted to experience the food. Also because this was my first time in Malaysia. I'd recommend the Insalata di Mare and Grilata Mista Nuraghi (grilled lamb) from the Sunset Deck and the varieties of curry from Bayu for an authentic Malaysian experience. I also loved the fresh fruit juices and the salad choices. It was worth spending the extra dime for. The breakfast, not so much. It was okay, but I thought it could be better, considering this would be the first meal for a long day of water activities. I personally don't eat a heavy breakfast, so it wasn't a big deal for me, but I would assume it will be for others. The excursions aren't that new for an island trip. You expect snorkelling and island hopping here and there, as usual, but the people made the difference for me. How special was it to have a team of Marine Biologists for the excursions? If I haven't mentioned yet, Alunan is an eco-friendly resort and they stick to their principles. They've hired the right people for the job. I also got to adopt, name, and plant a coral myself. That was a touching experience for me and made the birthday extra special, for sure. I hate to admit it but we take marine life for granted. Biha, one of the resident Marine Biologists, facilitated my coral adoption. Hakim, who headed the 3-pt snorkeling for my boat, even offered a late check out arrangement for me so I could join the next morning's Prehentian trip. Unfortunately, I was leaving the next day and couldn't reschedule flights. I would have loved to. Dewan is another kind soul who was so patient with me in the waters. As much as I love to swim and have beach trips, ironically, I panic in open waters, moreso with sharks. But thanks to him I got to see five of blacktip reef sharks plus two turtles on the other side. I wish I could include all of the people I met during the trip and share my experiences with them so you would know you'll be in good hands, but this is becoming too long. Ain, Naufal, Celiny, Chris, Arif, Madam Hasani, the staff around the resort... they were all key players to making my holiday a wonderful time. Why am I telling all of these stories when I could've just left 5 stars and said the resort was good? Because I really want to speak highly of the people that work there. They make all the difference. I've had the opportunity to meet Ewern, their manager, and I understood why. She's great at what she does. If only I could leave work as often as I want to, I'd be back in this place without second thoughts. Until then, I wish to convince readers to go and spend their holidays at Alunan. They really take care of their guests. Ask, politely if I may add, and you will see them do their best to deliver. They may not always have what you require, but they genuinely provide solutions. Alunan was a great introduction for me as to why Malaysia is truly Asia. Beautiful place, lovely people, amazing food. I miss everyone and everything already.…

I traveled with my pregnant daughter, her husband, their 2 year old, another older woman. There were at least 20 flights of stairs (and these were big stairs) up to our room. When we finally got there I was wondering how I would pack up the next day to go to the very small beach for the entire day because I certainly wouldn't be walking back and forth. Oh but may there was a beautiful view and I could sit on the balcony all day and dream of swimming in the blue water. I open the curtains to find the only view was of the stairs and another building. Zero view of the beach or water. I guess if you want to spend your day at the bar which is only a few flights of stairs this might be your place.

Hi Sherpa, thank you for staying with us and for your feedback. We have highlighted on our website as well as on other communication channels that we have many stairs (but certainly less than 20 flights of stairs) as we are built on a hill to ensure every private rooftop balcony in every room has a seaview. These stairs have also been mentioned by other guests' reviews as well. At the time of booking, we did not receive any requests from you for a lower room with less stairs and there was no mention about your pregnant daughter. Nevertheless, when you requested for a lower room during check in, we upgraded you to our 2-bedroom Family Suite which was located right in front of the beach with seaview. Hence, we are surprised to hear that you did not see any seaview from your private rooftop balcony. You then decided to leave a day earlier which we have compensated you out of goodwill and did our best to accommodate your requests. Yet it appears that Alunan Resort is not suitable for you and your family based on your review. Though we have consistently been rated by fellow guests as providing the best guest service and overall experience, we understand that Alunan Resort may not be everyone's cup of tea. It is our hope that you will take the time to find out more about a resort what it has to offer and read reviews to gauge its suitability to your requirements before you book your next island vacation. Thank you. Warm wishes, The Alunan Team
