We spent a lot of time sitting outside at night close to the lagoon and didn't have any problems with mosquito's. We were there in October and it was way to rough for snorkeling from the beach. The kayaking was excellent very relaxing and plenty of wildlife encounters. We did hear when we got home there are crocodiles in the lagoon, we didn't see any. You might want to confirm this before you go.
I would agree with Cory W, it is too far to Kandy for a day tour. Even Nuwara Eliya took us five hours one way and then we took @ 4 Hrs by train on to Kandy.
Parks are closer by and the Yalla was the highlight of our trip.
