We booked in this hostel last minute because we had a problem with our booking in another hostel in the city and we were very happy with the change. We stayed in the double room, and is spacious, two single beds, A/C, a lot of storage and a sink.
The beds are indian style, hard mattress, but confy. There is a kitchen and supermarkets in the area. The location is good and very easy to find. We went out a couple of nights and came back very late and it was completely safe, and there was always someone in reception to open the door.

The Red Lollipop Hostel is by far one of the most thoughtful residences I'll lived at. Located strategically by the Mandaveli Depot, it's a place you have to stay at if you're looking to meet travellers from around the world and experience Indian hospitality.

Every need of the guest is taken care of. You think it, and there's a provision for it!

The rooms are comfortable, clean, ventilated and well lit. The nooks of the bunkers are supplied with plug points and curtains for privacy. One can secure his/her things in lockers too.

The kitchen is so well equipped, you almost believe that you're home. The staff is cooperative, forthcoming, nurturing and more so non judgmental. The common areas are comfortable, they serve as venues to have interesting conversations with fellow travelers and guests.

The entertainment room is ridiculously cosy, one can snuggle in and watch anything they prefer on a rather large LED TV.

What I love most is the dry area to have your laundry sun-kissed, while the terrace is a great place to hang out, and watch the birds and neighboring buildings.

I'm returning to this place every time I am in Chennai. If I may say, I don't know of any place in India that is set up like this. It's probably a 5-star hostel for the discerning traveller. The walls, the ambience is always talking to you. You're probably alone, but never lonely at the Red Lollipop Hostel.

In a few sentences: lying staff, really rude, not helpfull, unprofessional organisation, trying to rip you off and they are only after your money! They tried to charge me 1800 rupees while it only costed 36 rupees.

First of all, this hostel has been my most expensive one in 4 months India. When I checked in, other guest came in between and the staff were helping them first, eventhough I just arrived after having a flight and I was tired. Checking in took me over an hour because the staff helped everyone while he was "serving" me.

The reason why I wanted to here is because of the good reviews. I red something about they helped really well with getting a sim card. When I asked information and advise, I was really disappointed. He couldn't give me a clear answer to where the shop was located and pointed at the map on the wall (what isn't correct regarding the real lay out of the city) The staff told me all the shops were closed... I wanted to try it anyway and I found the shop and it was open... Just such a diffrence from the other reviews..

Anyway, after two days stay, what was ok but still not better than a much cheaper hostel. I forget my cotton bag which I allready have for the last two years that I'm travelling. I just renewed the bag by renew some stitches. The value of the bag is around 300 rs but it means a lot to me.

I called the hostel and they found it, still in my dorm. It took quite a bit before they understand because of their English skills. You have to answer the same question four time because they don't understand. I was happy and I asked if they could keep him there for then. No problem.

I worked out my travelplan and asked them to ship it to me. They said no and asked me to pick it up or some friend of mine could pick it up. After 5 times calling, after they put the phone down on me, I made a scene out of it because I expected a little bit more service. The post office is 100 metres next to the hostel!! But they didn't want to ship it because they are responsible. I guarranteed them that I would take the responsibility and its only a bag worth of 300 rupees!?
Finally they said OK, said sorry for the behaviour of the staffmember I spoke on the phone and requested me to put the adress in a mail. I would hear from them the same night about the costs.. That never happened.

So I called them back after 3 weeks for
4 or 5 times. They requested me if I could put it on the mail. But I allready did and they don't respond! Still they asked me 100 stupid questions over and over because they don't understand English. (what bag? Which dorm? Your name? If a friend could pick it up? If I could take a flight to pick it up??!!) this all by only two staffmembers.

So I send them another email, put my complaints in them and the adress. I could them straight after to verify if they recieved it. The guy said: please send an email (gave me a wrong email adress!!??) and said thank you. And he hung up the phone, giving me no chance to explain. This was the third time they hang up the phone on me.. They were probaly sick of me..

After two days I recieved a phone call,(same staff member) they could ship it to me for 1800 rupees for a regular shipping, . I told them I wanted to think about it because I need it fast because I leaving India. I called the post office next to the hostel and they said: for speed shipping it will cost maximum 36 rupees.

I called back and confrented them with that. They didn't know what post office.. So I gave them the details of their neighbours.. If I could call back half an hour later... I called them seriousely over 30 times back without them picking up the phone. Then when I tried to call them more times, the line was death...

Next day, new try. Same story, if I could call back later... You can guess what happened...
The story ended with an email that I got, saying that the local authorities don't allow the hostel to ship stuff for guests... And they hang up the phone again on me when I tried to get a story. Rude!

End of story.. (happy end? No!)

Lovely place. Very comfortable and clean.

Staff go above and beyond. I asked the manager where I could buy an orange, and five minutes later he came and gave one to me!

Also, lots of other backpackers. 👌

Flew into chennai and wasn't difficult to get from the airport to the hostel by bus. Just walk towards the domestic airport parking lot and there is a bus stop right at the entrance/exit of the lot and catch a bus to mandevelli depot. The owner was very helpful. Considering that this place is still fairly new, I was the only guest at the time, which was great for getting some rest.

No place I stayed in India had such amazing stuff. really caring, going out of their way to help everyone. Thanks again Edgar for the great talk!

Curtains around beds are amazing, same as room size and seperate Luggage room with big lockers.

The only thing missing in the girls dorm is a window (day light is so much better!) and one sink in the ground floor is quite minimal.

Firstly unless you are solo and desperate for company this hostel is ridiculously priced.You can get far more for your money if you are on your own or two plus, just look on bookings.com

Not only that but they charge for even using a towel which is ludicrous when you are paying over 10 USD for a dorm bed.

The hostel is full of rules as well, some of which are pathetic.

Plus side staff are friendly. It is a real hostel which is rare in India, it is clean, spacious with WiFi and a kitchen.breakfast is very good.

Price it at 350 for a dorm bed.

Thanks for your review. Chennai is an expensive city and our location is on the main road next to the bus depot. For the 10 dollars you pay we give free breakfast ,bottled water, 24 hrs air conditioned dorm, fast wifi, non stop water supply, key access, full security. However we clearly mention in our website this is not for people looking for a cheap place to crash and we wish you good luck in searching for a dorm priced at 350 next time in chennai.Please send us an email to info@redlollipop.in so that we can refund the amount as our focus is quality and not your money and it would have been nice if you could mention your name so that we can look into what went wrong in your case. Hostel being a shared space cannot function without rules as there are humble guests who require peace of mind and sleep.We are sorry that we could not provide you free towels, toilet accessories, swimming pool, steam ,sauna jacuzzi, gym, spa for 10 dollars .

This is now my fifth time staying at The Red Lollipop Hostel.

Conveniently located near the Mandavelli bus station, Tawa 9 restaurant, and world famous Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram.

I have never experienced such loving and wonderful service.

Murugan ( the owner) is a staple all which hospitality encompasses.

A frequent traveler himself;
Always knowledgable and helpful in aiding all his guests to plan their trips and ensuring their safety in all he does.

Tamim;

Their talented chef will astound you with his traditional and inspiring south Indian cuisine.

With free delicious breakfast , fast wifi, clean dorms , western toilets, and hot showers.

Weather for a night or a few months;

I am grateful for this home in Chennai.

Upon arrival the first time, we were greeted and welcomed into the premises. They offered us some great advice, and were very helpful before even arriving in India.

We decided to spend another night here after our 5 month trip, and had accumulated quite a few more bags. When we arrived through the doors, we didn't even receive a hello or welcome. The man behind the counter pretty much just wanted to take our money, repeatedly telling us if we check our even an hour late, he will charge us. Spent more than half the time watching TV instead of helping us with our bags, and filling out forms while we wait.

The next day the woman behind the counter was much more friendly, and helpful. The bad staff before need more training if they want to keep persistent good reviews. The breakfast was very nice, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 2. The price of the room was very expensive compared to other options in Chennai. They have a note stating not to complain about the expensive rooms as Chennai is a city so prices are different. This is a lie as we have stayed at many capitol cities in India, and found rooms at around half the cost or less with equally good facilities.

Conclusion:
Good for first time arrivals, but stay for one or two nights while you can find cheaper alternative.
