We arrived in Melaka after a nine and a half hour bus journey - that was supposed to take six! We were tired and moderately fed-up. The taxi driver took us to the two places we had chosen to stay but the first was full and the second was not up to much.
We stumbled upon the Cheng Hoe (it has a sign outside advertising the RM38 price and states that prices do not go up at the weekend) and were told there was only a RM55 room left. We went away and looked around but decided that we'd take this room for a night in case we couldn't find anything else! It was about RM20 more than our budget and a small room but it had air conditioning and a hot shower plus a TV. We moved rooms a couple of nights later to a room without a bathroom for RM38 - it's huge! It has air conditioning and a TV too and a sink in the room and like the other room is immaculately clean. The beds were both comfortable and pillows soft - a godsend after the breezeblocks we had to put our heads on in Penang!
The staff here are wonderful too - always smiling and helpful. Grandad is always walking around with a baby or toddler in his arms and we felt very safe and very welcome here, our best guesthouse experience yet.
The only flipside would be the rooms are quite light at night and if you happen to have noisy neighbours you'll really know about it, thankfully for us, only one night of those! You can hear the mosque but it's a pretty sociable one that doesn't go off early in the morning and the last call is about 7pm.
Couldn't recommend this place highly enough - and it's in the heart of everything.

We stayed there 2 nights. This is the second time there. Returned there because of the great location and affordable price. We stayed in a room upstairs with attached heated shower. The room was air-conditioned and had a queen sized bed. It was clean, as expected, and small, maybe a little cramped. The noise level was quite low, but we heard everyone's footsteps and conversation as they passed by. However, at night, it was quiet. I believe the other residents were considerate and kept the noise level to a minimum.
It's located in the heart of a historical site where several old buildings are located. Access to food is plentiful with local and Western cuisines readily available. There's even a Hard Rock down the road! Be prepared to wait if you go there without reservations.
We parked nearby, and spent the next two days walking and snapping photos of hundred year old buildings.
At night, there was a night bazaar which opens every Friday and Saturday. They sell foods, drinks, and trinkets. The pubs are opened then with locals plying their trade in their music. I recommend The Geographer which has a live band or solo act. Across is a quieter bar with a live music. Sit outside if you want to enjoy music from both places!
You need to have lots of water due to the heat and humidity there so buy them from the nearby convenience store. Also recommended are umbrellas as it rains quite frequently. But the showers don't last. Bring clothes that are light; such as cotton, and have a good pair of walking shoes. Alternatively, you can explore more if you rent a bicycle. Grab a map and visit nearby historical sites as well.
All in all, this place served as a quiet, clean and comfortable place for us to rest our tired feet, and gave us much needed sleep from a days exploration. We will definitely visit here again.

Not the best - or cheapest - place to stay in town (there are quite a few right along the same street that are cheaper and slightly better, all with variations on the Cheng Ho name!) But I arrived at midnight and crashed in the first place I came to.

For the price, I got a spotlessly clean room with two single beds, great air con, and had a really good nights sleep. However, the room was windowless and the bathroom (although clean and well maintained) was shared.

The next morning I went somewhere else a few doors down and got a bigger ensuite room for the same price.

So basically it isn't a bad place, for the cheap price you do get a nice room and it is a great option at a push, but there are better places if you look around.

We stayed here for about a week after only planning to stay 2 nights...

We stayed in a double room which included a fan and aircon, TV (but no English channels) dressing table, wardrobe, sink...oh and of course, free WiFi in your room!

It was a shared bathroom with cold shower (you really dont need hot water here!!!)

Great location in China Town, within walking distance to all the sights and shopping mall.

Bed linen seemed very clean, handy having a sink in your room, room very spacious.

Staff very friendly but sometimes you have to go in the back to find them!

Mosque situated opposite the hotel which can be noisy at times (sometimes quite early) but not too much of a pain.

We paid 30ringgits (around £5 ) per night which we found very reasonable

It's very near to Jonker Street... But yet, it's quiet for a good night's sleep. The furnishing is simple but comfortable. Definitely good for families; they have a variety of rooms. There is a small (shared) cooking area, and a little fridge too.

Decent hotel with friendly owner, cleanliness was very satisfactory, and the price was awesome for 2 nights stay. It is just a street away from the famous Jonker Street. Limited parking space in such hot spot area but thanks to the family, they allocated their own parking space to me. Extremely helpful and friendly family. Our room was equipped with private bathroom and we are free from the hassle of sharing the bathroom. Restaurants and cafes are available around the hotel. Highly recommended hotel for budgetary trip!

Fabulous location just behind Jonker Street. We got a room at the back which was nice & quiet. It's really clean, with comfy beds & a really good shower. Really good value compared to others in the area & they don't charge a premium rate for weekends. The owners are lovely & I felt welcome here. There's a fab dimsum restaurant two doors down from the hotel - I would highly recommend this place for breakfast.

We stayed in a family room with 2 double beds right behind the reception. The room is clean, there's a hot shower and overall the toilet is clean. There's WiFi provided in the room with rather reasonable speed. The hotel is a stone's throw from the famed Jonker St and within walking distance to the Dutch Square.
