The Neem is a quaint collection of four rustic chalets that were once the workers’ living quarters of a Dutch Colonial coconut plantation belonging to one of the last Dutch Governors of Malacca. The chalets are collectively known as the Neem due to the magical and therapeutic Neem trees found on the common grounds of this homestead together with the humongous Ketapang trees, coconut trees, mango trees, frangipanis, ixoras and the odd kelor tree.

Detailed Reviews
The hosts are super friendly here. They made us a tasty local breakfast and also went to the trouble of getting fresh fruit and so on. We are both vego and didn't have any problems with the food at all. We had nice chats over breakfast and learned more about Chinese culture / Feng Shui. If you are in the front left room, take care with the lock on the door on the bottom left inside, we left it half up and it ended up locking us out. The hosts were friendly and helpful and didn't mind bailing us out when we called them even though it was kind of late at night. I think it was the most peaceful place we stayed in also since we keep getting woken up by imams elsewhere on the trip. At the neem it's only birdsong and children playing at the nearby school, much nicer! Although we didn't use it, the pool looked nice also. All in all, we had a good time, recommended.

Forget the big flashy hotels! The true Melakan experience resides under the cosy shades of The Neem! Warm smiles were abundant from the staff from the moment we arrived, accommodating to all our needs without any qualms.
We traveled as a group and booked the Ketapang room as it came with 2 king-sized beds. There was plenty of space for all of us and we were comfortable throughout our stay. Traveling around was convenient as The Neem is strategically located near eateries (Melaka Raya), historic landmarks (A Famosa, Jonker), and malls (Dataran Pahlawan, Mahkota Parade). There was a pool to dip in during the hot afternoon, and a trampoline that gave us a good workout.
All in all it was a cosy atmosphere, surrounded by nature. Though located in the city, it was still very quiet and away from the busy street. Highly recommended for tourists coming from abroad!

In a historical city full of high-rise hotels and malls (and more being built), The Neem is a cozy, friendly oasis with wonderful hosts. The accommodation is not extremely luxurious but the location (halfway between the main museums & Jonker Street, and the Portuguese settlement - about a 15-min walk to either) is good, the breakfast is authentic and delicious, and the small swimming pool is refreshing. Since there are just four cottages you know the ambiance will be intimate, and the hosts really go out of their way to make you feel like honored guests - even friends. Where else can you sit on your own little terrace and watch the mangoes drop out of the tree?

Previously i brought my students to stay here as it is quite near to Dataran Pahlawan and museums. We stayed at Ketapang room; which is big to accommodate 4 of us. This boutique resort makes us feel relax and pleasant after a tiring day. A homey feeling. Oh yeah! The bathroom! Really really special! Kind of shower-in-the-jungle feeling. The students find it really tempting to enjoy their reading in the room and having their own sweet time in the swimming pool. Overall, this boutique resort is suitable place to stay for a study trip. It is near to historical places; walking distance less than 15 minutes to reach. Definitely will choose this place again to stay in the future!

Have been going to Malacca for sometimes but this is the first time I stayed at chalet rather than hotel. The environment is nice, bed is comfort, room is clean and spacious with attached bathroom. Breakfast is provided. Hospitality is very good.
It is near the Memorial Pengisytiharan Kemerdekaan, A Famosa, Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall, and Jonker Street where we can just walk to there. Really convenient.
Quiet and windy although is in the town. Can just sit on the deckchair and hear the waves on every moment. Excellent place to relax after a day out of shopping or sightseeing. Would be an ideal place for relaxing.

My family & sister family spend a weekend here. We saw a the pictures and was impressed. We all took family room. 1st impression wasn't that great, the caretaker wasn't that welcoming, then we looked around and realized that the pictures online were too perfect that reality. The wifi was free but very bad connections. The night were worst, despite the coils we were still attacked by mosquitoes. The birds were still chirping away during the night. Breakfast wasn't that great very limited item.

My family stayed at The Neem for 2 nights in June. We stayed in Ketapang, a large room with one king sized bed and one king sized mattress on the floor. Paid RM250 for the room through LivingSocial deals. We also paid RM50 for an extra single mattress. It was able to accommodate my family of 7. The room is air-conditioned but as it is quite a large room, it took quite a while to cool the room. The kids enjoyed the trampoline and little pool. We were the only guests when we stayed so we had the whole place to our selves, which was nice. We did have a problem with mozzies, though. My kids had lots of mosquito bites. Breakfast was provided - some local kueh, noodles, toast, juice, coffee and tea. Great location - about 10-15min walk to Dataran Pahlawan so although we drove, we parked at The Neem and walked. Bear in mind, that you will be walking at the edge of narrow streets (no pedestrian walkway) with cars driving almost beside you, at times quite dangerous for young children. Our 3 yo had to be carried most of the way. However, it was always a relief to return to the quiet oasis of The Neem after a tiring day of shopping or sightseeing and jump in the pool or on the trampline. A memorable place to stay - full of character. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would return, but with lots of insect repellent!!

We stayed at the Cocos chalet for 2 nights. It was a wonderful experience. It's my first time staying in a chalet compared to the normal hotels with a grand lobby and all. The Neem gave off a friendly aura and one would feel welcomed. I like the colours used, bright and warm. The staff is very friendly. The facilities are well equip. I love the room. The bed is so big and the decorations, paintings on the wall are nice and not overboard. The bathroom is just lovely although it would be nice if dustbins were provided. We chose The Neem mainly because it's very convenient and tourist attractions are of a walking distance. Perfect for backpack travellers. Overall, it was a great experience and I would go there in the future if I go to Melaka again.

We stayed here for 3 nights based on the reviews from Trip Advisor. Lovely room with a funky bathroom. It was also wonderful to have a pool at one’s door step and be able to swim anytime. Nice location and easy to walk to restaurants and the central tourist area .I liked the concept of 4 independent cottages – small and quite. Despite the good infrastructure of @Neem, I was however a little confused as to what it actually was . This is billed on Trip Advisor in the Specialty lodging. Yet rooms were not serviced for the entire time we were there. I have never had this experience in a specialty lodge or B&B establishment. Food - I would say is average. As a vegetarian they had accommodated my requirements by buying in. On the last morning we were there we waited an hour for breakfast as the young man who had to purchase it overslept. We should simply have skipped that breakfast – as not only was it an hour late it was not at all tasty. I expect it was bought it haste at the nearest shop - to just get it done. Previous mornings had been good and available on time. Given the accommodation available in Melaka , I would explore alternative accommodation should I ever go again. This establishment, whilst it has the basic structure , needs more than it is currently offering.

Response from Harold_Lim, IT Manager at The Neem@Banda Hilir
Responded 15 Aug 2013
Thank you for your intuitive review. Here at the Neem, we accept all kinds of feedback especially if the comments were made in good faith and made fairly and justly. We would also like to personally thank you for your lavish praise for our chalets, layout, design, funky bathroom, personal swimming pool and superb location. We do stand out in Malacca town as not only are we a landed boutique accommodation with a personal swimming pool but the Neem also has a historical past as it was once the workers' quarters of Adriaan Koek who was one of the last Dutch acting governor of Malacca. Having said all that we can't merely dwell on the past and towards this end we would like to sincerely apologize to this reviewer if her stay was far from perfect on these following accounts: 1) The reviewer was so enamoured with our chalet that she and her partner were constantly in it with all doors and windows shut. Our housekeeper was too embarrassed to request permission to do a turn down fearing that her intention would disrupt the privacy of this reviewer. It is however a policy at the Neem to do not only 1 but 2 turn downs in a day. If only the reviewer had as much as whispered, the turn down service would have been carried out happily by our housekeeper. Personally many a time i myself have requested for this service even in 5 or 6 star hotels. 2) To the best of our knowledge we tried our utmost best to cater to the reviewer' Vegetarian palate. Our manager went out of her way to offer her gourmet Chinese Vegetarian dishes but this was turned down as the reviewer mentioned that she had been eating Chinese food for the last couple of days and was sick of it. It was then suggested that we would source gourmet Indian vegetarian dishes which we did on the first two days and we actually blew our budget as we really wanted to please the reviewer. She herself concurred with this as her review did state that the breakfast on the first two days had been good. Interestingly our staff did not wake up late but actually had to walk further as our regular Vegetarian restaurant was randomly closed on the reviewer's last day with us. We had offered the reviewer home cooked Humus and oatmeal porridge instead but these were not accepted hence the delay on the last day. Although not mentioned by the reviewer we also ensured for the 3 days the reviewer stayed with us we went out of our way to source the best desserts and Malaccan cakes for her afternoon tea. In any event we still welcome the reviewer to the Neem to offer her our brand of Malacca hospitality and we wish to extend our sincerest apologies had we disappointed her in any way.
