I had a pleasant stay in Heeren by the River Hotel. The location is very strategic as it is near to Jonker street & other Melaka tourism spots such as A Famosa, St.Paul's hill, Stadthuys, Melaka river, etc. The hotel is new & clean with relatively big bathroom. Basic amenities like towels, shampoo, soap, hair dryer, kettle, coffee & tea are provided. This is a 3 floors hotel but unfortunately there is no lift. I stayed at 3rd floor and the staff willingly helped me to carry my luggage up to 3rd floor upon check in. The wifi signal & sound proof were poor. I can hear noises from the guests staying at 2nd floor. Overall, the hotel is worth staying.

Right at the head of the night market on Jonker Street. Lots of good food, shopping and sightseeing to do all around. The hotel is quaint, small but clean rooms that are tastefully designed. Staff were friendly and helpful. Right across the road from the Hard Rock Cafe after a night out that was very convenient too! A great choice for a weekend getaway to explore Jonker and its surrounding areas.

As with any new hotel, Heeren by the River has some teething problems that might dissuade the average traveller. But first, let's talk about its good points: It has a great location, on Lorong Hang Jebat which is just by the riverside and next to Jonker Street. As such, its close to all the nearby attractions and amenities of Malacca town such as The Stadhuys, 'A Formosa' and countless restaurants and small shop eateries.

I can find no fault with the staff as they are generally courteous and helpful and any problems with the hotel either reflect a structural or management issue-so please, do not take it out on the staff as they have no control over the hotel's issues.

Firstly, the hotel does not have elevators and for people who are staying at the top floor (level 3), well good luck climbing the steep stairs.

Secondly, parking is...limited but this is a general problem in Malacca and although the hotel does have its own parking lots-beware that they are precious and few in numbers indeed.

Thirdly and more glaringly, WiFi is usually only accessible at the lobby area and though we were promised full WiFi connectivity in our rooms, this did not turn out to be quite true. I did spot their WiFi router on our floor but it doesn't seem to be doing very well. Case in point, i stood under the router itself and my various devices still stubbornly could not even 'find' the network.

This is usually an indication of a structural internet networking issue and not as the hotel claimed, because of 'rain' and 'a lot of guests'.

For myself, having travelled to places without internet access, it was not a big deal but for people who are addicted to their facebook and whatsapp, it could be a trip-killer.

Nevertheless, for the price i paid, it was quite a good deal regardless of any faults or defects.

Frankly, the best part of this hotel is location, it is only 1 min walk to the jonker street ( night market on Friday sat and sun only). There is no lift in the hotel, have to climb stairs and not recommended for the elderly. The building is old and the room is made of wood therefore you can hear the stomping from above unit. The room that we stayed cabinet are faulty (missing one side of the door). As we are facing the street, the restaurant beside on the music till close to 1am and you can hear the music loud and damaging to our rest. Motorbike, people talking downstairs can be heard loud and clear. Good rest will probably start at 2am onwards where most noises come to a stop. Hotel do not ribose parking space and you need to drive to a public parking lot and pay rm12 for overnight which also means you are not allowed to retrieve the car till next day. Beware of the parking lot, remember to keep the receipt, they tried to ask me for another 12rm payment saying I park overnight, luckily I kept my receipt.

We had booked to stay for one night at Heeren by the River through Booking.com however when we arrived we were told that because we hadn't arrived by 6pm our room had been given away. This hadn't been stated on the website, booking confirmation or email. As a result we had to find somewhere else to stay, not ideal late at night after a long drive. If the policy of the hotel is to check-in before 6pm then it needs to be clearly stated.
Kamal was very helpful in coming with us to find a room at another hotel and both Kamal and the other gentleman at reception were friendly. However, it was a massive inconvenience and took over an hour and a half to sort out.
Please note that this review does not take into account the quality of the rooms as we did not get chance to stay there!

Stayed for 3d2n at this hotel because our hotel we normally chose to stay at was fully booked the weekend we wanted to travel.

The location is fantastic - can see the river and the water wheel from the room, the hard rock cafe and the start of the night market less than 30 seconds walk away.

Bed was very comfortable although a little bit noisy on the floorboards - but its a refurbished heritage hotel, its immaculate throughout - pristine white cotton sheets and a spacious bathroom.

The bath/shower arrangement with no shower curtain makes it a bit of a wet experience but that's OK for me.

A little bit noisy on Friday/Saturday night due to a window overlooking the busy street - but - that's the price you'll have to pay anywhere in Joker walk for a hotel - and the inevitable calls to prayer in the early morning. Like I say both these things are outside of the control of the hotel.

Pros:
~ Location
~ New & clean rooms
~ Friendly staff
~ Affordable
~ Quiet
~ Good beds

We have done an ocular inspection with the hotels nearby: Hotel Puri (smelly place; so-so rooms), Heeren House (the restaurant made us not want to check the rooms), The Baba Hotel (so-so room). We wanted to stay at Jonker Boutique Hotel but it was full - so I cannot comment on their rooms. But definitely, if you want to be closer to the attractions and just walk to these places - this is the hotel to stay!

Cons:
~ Mosquitoes at the guest's loungue and outside the rooms

Located right in the middle of the touristy area, it's a very clean, newly-refurbished hotel. No car park, you have to take your chances with a public car park a few minutes walk away (which could be full on weekends). Melaka gets congested during weekends as tourists from KL and Singapore flock in. Good luck if you're driving in, your only hope of reaching the hotel is if you're using Waze...there are numerous back-street turns you need to take as some roads are closed around the area on weekends.

The hotel itself is very clean. Staff are young and pleasant but just follow procedures with little flexibility in decision-making. You get the impression they know they're going to be full every weekend so why bother trying any harder.

No lifts. And someone decided the less steps on the stairs the better, so each step is a few inches higher than comfortable. You're not going to make it up or down if you have bad knees or a bad hip.

I got a great big room facing the street. Beautiful room but the street (facing Sid's Pub across ) is very noisy, you can hear every car and motorcycle and the horrendous trishaws blasting loud pop music even at 2am, and in the afternoons you can hear the loud chatter from the pub's sidewalk-sitting customers and also noise from various off-key singers at a nearby evening park. Perhaps a room towards the back might be quieter, which would increase the quality of rest/sleep tremendously.

Bathroom is raised above room floor level, with a big step. Seems risky when wet. One slip and your holiday is ruined.

Not for old pple unless room is at ground flr as there is no lift. We stayed on the 3rd flr. 2 flights of stairs to walk up. Our room is quiet, room is small but toilet is big. Paid sgd110 for 2 nites which i tink is reasonably cheap. Altho no view but location is excellent. Juz a min walk to the entrance of jonker st, nice walk by the river which is just infront of the hotel. We didnt drive so parking was not an issue for us. But i saw on their cctv they have a small parking area for guests somewhere near the hotel. Front desk was helpful when we needed help with the wifi signal. They have very weak wifi signal. Simple decent accommodation with excellent location for walking tourists.

Check in was smooth with friendly staff at the front of house. Lift was not available and i stayed on level 3 so we had to climb the steps which may be difficult for the elderly or guests with children or heavy luggage.

Room and toilet were spacious and clean. The mosaic lamps were a nice touch to the room.

The room door had no peephole so you are unable to see who is knocking at your door. Hotel needs to look into this as a safety precaution. Parking is available but limited to perhaps 3 cars maximum.

Toothbrush, toothpaste and bedrooms slippers are not available so bring your own if you plan to stay here. Instant Coffee/Tea & 2 bottles of water are provided daily.

The hotel's amenities really need urgent upgrading. The toilet taps were not working well and the water flow was inconsistent.Towels were provided but they did look very worn out. The toilet accessories like holders, mirror, water, shower head etc were all rusty. The basin was rather small so the floor got wet each time i washed my face.

There was a bath tub in my room, however when i washed the tub before taking my shower it started to flood very badly as all the water that was supposed to go down the drainage leaked into the entire bathroom floor. The staff came and fixed it for that night. The next day the same problem occurred.

For rooms with windows that faced the road, it can be quite noisy for light sleepers.

The bright side of the stay was the excellent location. It is really just a few steps away from Jonker Street and opposite the hotel is the police station. Food, shopping and massage were readily available. H&M was just diagonally opposite.

The rating would have fallen way below average if not for the location and price that we paid for. If the hotel can look into upgrading the amenities, it will make the stay more pleasant.
