Cheked into this hotel for a quick 2D-1N stay on 14/01/2020. We had a great deal so the hotel was well worth is. The rooms are small but the view of the museum garden was great. I'll just break it down in pros and cons to make things easier

Pros:
Beautifully decorated, has a pool (with complimentary towels in the pool area)
Free breakfast (although a simple one with some pastries, nasi lemak, coffee and tea and fruits)
Lift (I don't have to drag a luggage of 4 pax up the stairs)
Adequately facilitated room (Bottled water, TV, Aircon, Hot/Cold Shower, Dryer, Ironing board and an Iron, Reading lights, bathroom amneties)
Strategically situated (Walking distance from Stadhuys and Jonker Walk even for a family of 4 yo, 6yo)
Friendly staff (The purposely inflated the pool floats so that my kids can have a better time there, there was a huge doughnut and a swan in the pool)

Cons:
The room was a bit dusty (I know that because my kids were throwing their stuff animal toys on the blinds and all the dust fell down)
Limited parking spaces (I went on a week day so I have no problem with this but this can be a real problem on holidays)

2 night stay over weekend in July after lifting of lockdown / MCO. Got 2 rooms on second floor for my family at the welcome back rate.

Pros:

Great location - it is close to all major sites and food
Price point
Rooms are comfortable with all the amenities
Front desk team is friendly and helpful
Free flow of free coffee is nice
Modern and open design results in good natural lighting for rooms

Cons

Limited parking and it is street parking (but there is always Grab)
Bath towels looked tired and had faint stains - time for a change
The plumbing (adjacent rooms) always seem to be running through the night so if you are a light sleeper it is not great

Recently stayed in this hotel and from the moment we got there, the staff were very friendly and helpful. As there was a queue to check in, they directed us to take a seat and called us once the reception was ready for us to check in.
Room was very nice and spacious and kept relatively well. The bed was large and comfortable and they even provided a bolster! The only downside to the room is the sink being too near the bed causing some minor splashing especially when brushing your teeth. There wasn't any hand or face towels provided even upon request and that is something I thought was lacking.

Other than that, the location is great, a close proximity to Jonker street through a road with minor traffic but far enough from the main street to have peace and quiet at night. The parking provided by the hotel is VERY limited and we were not able to park there during our stay. However, there are plenty of public parking spots just across from the hotel and parking is 5RM per day and can be done through an app. The staff were nice enough to teach me how to use it.

Overall a very good stay and the staff made the stay a lot more enjoyable despite the hotel lacking in some ways. A very 'hip' hotel and very much worth the price!

Pros: water pressure for the rainshower was great. Room was clean and modern.

Cons: WiFi signal was too slow. Took a long time to open a Web page. Only good for reading emails. Owner had built a lift and a pool for the hotel. Why can't they spend few hundreds dollars to install more routers in the hotel?

Room facing the adjacent building can be a little noisy on Saturday evening. However the event stopped at about 11pm. It was quiet on Sunday and Monday.

In room safety box was installed under the wash basin. Water from the sink seeped into the safety box. Luckily I have kept my passport inside a plastic sheet or else my passport will be soaked with water.

The room was tiny. Bathroom and toilet was made of frosted glass so kind of see through. The bed was comfortable. Aircon works well.
However, not near to any supermarket.
Attractions are 10 to 15 mins walk away.
Friendly staff. Room was clean and tidy.

Near to main square, bout 5 min walk, clean room(elvis) thought it was going to be noisy as situated next to the main reception but all good. Night market in town is good on sat and sun nights. Pool was small but OK, construction site behind was the view though. Shower was good, and water in the main reception area, both hot and cold available.

Stayed here for 4 nights and really enjoyed our stay! Rooms and beds are very comfortable. Used the pool several times and pretty much had it to ourselves. In a really good location quiet, but a short stroll to the town. Great value for money and loved that they had a water dispenser in reception for refills of hot or cold water. More hotels should do this.

Rucksack Caratel's primary plus is the excellent location. It is extremely central, but is set back enough where you don't have to compete with the night market traffic. I opted for a larger room with a view for a small upgrade price and I would recommend doing so if you are considering this hotel. The bathroom setup is a little strange and I would note that. The sink is outside the bathroom, which is fine, and the toilet and shower are in small frosted boxes. If you are not comfortable seeing your bunkmate nude or knowing that they dump, it may be an awkward stay. There's a very thin privacy line there. The hotel also seems to have some very strict Covid protocol that is still lingering. You have to tell them if you want a proper room cleaning. The location and sizable upgraded rooms make this an excellent option for your Malacca stay.

The Good:
(1) near Jonker Street
(2) free water refill
(3) spacious room
(4) everywhere is clean except for the bathroom which is a bit mouldy on the bottom of the walls

The bad:
(1) the bed is really bad, I slept on it and had aches and pains, it sinks in and cannot support an 85kg weight.
(2) the sink is just beside the bed, the water splashes onto the bed when my kids accidentally use it.
(3) carpark space is limited, if you drive out, you might lose your spot and have to pay for parking, they have only 4 lots for about 10 over rooms of guests. Don’t be late if you want to stay here.

Rather than opting for a normal kind of arrangement for my small family usual family trip on school holidays, we then choose to stay in this establishment, full of hope it can offer something fresh. It safe to say that we had been blessed with wonderful experience instead. Their biggest selling point was definitely the location itself, as a host of attractions just a walking distance away. Yet we would like to remind you that parking spots are scarce, please act accordingly.

Check in process is smooth, we had been allotted with Buddy Caravan room (was informed that the rest – in which able to cater numbers of family members has been fully booked) The setup of room was ok, able to accommodate 2 adults and 2 kids accordingly. The mood / deco was full of reference towards the States pop culture, and possess so many instagramable spot, plus readying board games + books to read offers something different with the rest. Wi-Fi readied was surprisingly good, in which enabling me to settle pending office matters. The only letdown I can clearly see from both of my boys were their inability to have fun at readied pool, due to both of them can’t swim either.

I do confess that we will seriously consider of staying there in the near future.

We grabbed a metred taxi from the bus terminal in malacca. If you are travelling with kids, keep a close eye on them. The bus station is one of the few places in the world we felt uneasy, being followed by an older man trying to talk to /approach our 7 year old son, even after we asked him not to. We returned to singapore via a private transfer after that experience.

Not sure what you mean by secure? Thrre isn't a fenced parking area but it is very quiet and we never felt unsafe or saw that there were any random people not associated with the Caratel. The front and side are well lit and as it is the end of a short street, no through traffic.
