Upon arriving to our 'superior' double room, we were greeted by a note informing us that refurbishing works were taking place on the floor below. The noise was deafening and we asked to move rooms, however the manager at reception said there were no more double rooms available (despite this 'double' bed being two singles pushed together). We agreed to...

I stayed at this hotel because I had business to do in the area. It is in a good location, 2 min walk to Jiashan Rd station on the subway line 9, or 6-7 min walk in the other direction to Dapuqiao station, where there is also a great shopping center. Also, 3 stops from Xujiahui station, or a 15...

The bed broke. Need I say more? I laid down, thought it was a bit flimsy and the very next thing I remember is being on the floor. It was a poorly constructed pull-out couch contraception. They ended up putting me into another room (no upgrade, same class). I noticed that in both rooms the carpets were stained. Not a...

My family and I got a single and double room at this hotel for a few nights. The single room was small but the double room was huge in comparison. Air conditioner was working in the single room but not in the double room. Rooms are dated and dim but adequate. Free wired internet that was surprisingly fast. Breakfast buffet...

The lobby was a little rusty and need re-decoration, and the front desk service need improvement. However, the room, locaiton, and other service associates (e.g. room service, and cleaning staff) are great! I stayed in this hotel for over a week this year and last year, both experiences are consistent. It is a very convinent location, Starbucks, convinent stores, supermarket...

I stayed at the pearl Hotel for only one night. I was a little disappointed with the lobby and especialy the lobby bar which I thought was in need of some refurbishing. So I was somewhat apprehensive when I was shown to my room. To my surprise, the room was exellent, very comfortable and compared to any 4 or 5...

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
