Recently stayed at this hotel in one of their suites. The room was very comfortable and with a separate wardrobe area with bath robes, umbrella, ironing board etc provided. The bathroom was large with a powerful shower, separate bath if needed, good sized towels and...More
The hotel is located in the hip area of Shanghai where restaurants and drinking places abound. In the day, the area is tame and business like. When night comes, the area is filled with revelers and local residents alike.

I really enjoyed my stay here at the Howard Johnson. Nice clean rooms, good sized bathrooms with a separate bath. Friendly staff and a good breakfast buffet.
I found the location to be excellent- right next to all the lovely cafes, boutiques, theatres and malls...More
I've stayed here twice now and it's a pretty good hotel with an excellent location in the Former French Concession. The rooms are comfortable, with a good number of outlets and plenty of space. The bathrooms are clean and well-appointed, with bottles of water replenished...More
I asked reception what their star rating was and they said, seeing they were a business hotel they had no stars which I found strange? Either way it suited my touring group because there was only business clientele at the hotel and not families.

While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet,
tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.

I do not remember seeing it in my room, however they had an extensive set up in the lobby for coffee and tea (just to the right of the front desk), and a really nice setup on the second floor at the restaurant(when it was open). I got my tea at a Starbucks less than a block away (Starbucks loyal), and you will be a few blocks from some of the best teas shops in the area.
