When we booked this hotel online we did not realize that it was so far away from the town of La Fortuna. Our first clue as to its location was when we booked our Jeep-Boat-Jeep shuttle from Montevrde and they charged us an extra $10 to take us to our hotel! Lavas del Arenal is not close to the volcano...

We found the folks at Lavas del Arenal very accomodating and willing to do all that was needed. The place turned out to be our only choice in Arenal (town of La Fortuna) and we found this to be a below average place to stay. The only saving grace was the people....so helpful!!

My cousin and I, both from the states and never been to CR, stayed there for four nights, and Mario and Kathia stayed in constant contact making sure we had everything we needed. I must have emailed them 15 times lol, asking about local sights, tours, etc., and they had all the hookups. The food was phenomenal. We had breakfast...

"It looks nice", I thought. "We don't need a 4-star resort". "We'll spend most of the time outside the hotel, anyway". Boy, was I wrong. This little "gem" was, without a doubt, the worst hotel I've ever stayed at. If you think it's going to be the kind of no frills, get the local experience, simple and quaint hotel, you're...

The room, #4, was disgusting. growing stuff, smelled nasty and mildewy. No-one that worked the hotel spoke english, so it was tough to communicate the horror. Showers did not work but an email to the owner got them fixed. The only saving grace is the grounds are beautiful. has a river across the back of the property, and the nature...

From the moment we arrived we were greeted by roosters, ducks and dogs. Such character this place has. We LOVED it there, beautiful surroundings. The swinging chair outside our room overlooking lush plants and birds flying all around just made the place awesome. And the staff is so very wonderful and warm. A fantastic place to stay while visiting Arenal,...

The hotel is very simple but clean. A little far from the Fortuna center (6 kms), offers a very quiet setting to rest at night. Little and nice pool, gorgeous gardens, but don´t have a restaurant, only for breakfast which is the same all days and very simple and local (fruit, gallo pinto, eggs, bread). If you want more confort...

Mario was so awesome, he shared his yummy tangerines fresh from his tree, showed us some free hikes. Reasonably priced and the breakfast was good. It was the only hotel we stayed in that had a fridge!
