When we first arrived, after the bumpy ride up the hill, I thought the hotel looked tired. My first impressions were correct, in its hey day and possibly pre covid I bet this hotel was very impressive. It was cloudy, dull, cool and then the rain started. Yes, I was disappointed. However, the room we stayed in was of a very reasonable standard and spacious. We went to the bar and had a few reasonably priced drinks and chatted with some other guests and had an enjoyable pleasant evening. Food was good and enjoyable too. In the morning there was the view, wow. We were lucky for it to be clear. The howler monkeys woke us up. The fire flies the night before were great. We went horse riding on the hills and actually had a really good time. I left with a much more positive attitude to this place and actually really enjoyed my stay.

The views from the rooms are truly incredible. The restaurant was delicious and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The driveway is slightly disconcerting, but definitely not the worst one we has to a hotel. It feels nice and close to everything in La Fortuna without feeling like you were on hotel row (how my husband and I started to refer to the MANY hotels stacked up next to each other on the main road).

My husband and I stayed here and sadly we were very disappointed. The location is very misleading and they fail to mention that the hotel itself is about a 10 minutes drive from the main road and very steep. If you’re not renting a car it will cost 35$ to get to fortuna one way. We read previously they offered shuttles however when we arrived we were told that was never a thing. The lodge is very rustic and the beds are super uncomfortable. The rooms weren’t cleaned throughout are five days stay, they only made our beds and gave us new towels. We ordered room service one night and they never collected our dishes even when they cleaned our room. The trash was not taken out and the shower door rattled all night long. The food at the restaurant was just about edible and they are very stingy with the breakfast portions The view of the volcano was our main reason to book this lodge, however being so high up all you see is fog. There are definitely better places to stay.

Do not bother staying here!!! This place is so far out from La Fortuna and it takes over 10 minutes to even get to the lodge from the bottom. We stayed in a Chalet and the view had the potential to be amazing but because the place is so high up, you are literally in the clouds and can't see anything. To get to the Chalet itself is a high, uphill walk with no lighting to help you get there at night Although there is a shortcut, this can only be used in the day. The bathroom doors kept banging at night due to the weather conditions. The hotel is extremely outdated and the beds are the worst I have ever slept on. I was 30 before I stayed here and became 70 after sleeping here with the back problems I gained. The housekeeping was terrible - they only changed our sheets and gave fresh towels and ignored our left over room service and did not change any bins or clean up. The sofas in the chalet looked like a million sweaty people had sat on it and are completely discoloured. The gym looks like it hasn't been touched in 20 years and there's a reason why. There's a fussball table with no ball. The restaurant has to be the worst place we have ever eaten. The first night we arrived we ordered Alfredo and bolognese and was disgusting - I asked if this was freshly made and the waiter said yes but tasted frozen and outdated like the hotel. The breakfast is OK, pancakes were good and the typical breakfast was actually good but for lunch/dinner do not bother eating here. Location is the biggest negative point. You really need to have a rental car to stay here otherwise no point. It takes 30 minutes to get to la fortuna and no tours would be willing to pick us up unless we paid extra so everything becomes more costly. The plus points - the grounds are really nice and when the weather is clear it does look really beautiful. Teresa the owner was accommodating and even prepared some breakfast for us in advanced on the day of our early morning departure. The staff are friendly in general.

We had 3 nights up there. The view were fantastic from the restaurant and surroundings. It is a very Old hotel with a lot of charme. However rooms are very outdated but it works. The restaurant are serving good average food all Day. Many possibilities for making trips in the area.

Hotel Arenal Lodge was the substitute for Magic Mountain on our G Adventures trip. The positive note from a nature lover is that there are bird feeders outside the dining room for breakfast for the birds. The food was excellent and the view when visible was great. I loved the cozy and intimate location within the forest. The room was very large but with all lights on it seemed to be lit by oil lamp or candlelight, The location was very remote with a long and challenging drive to any other facility. I envisioned an artist or writer wanting a small, quiet location with good services. I'd say it's not for everyone, but special for some people.

If you drive to and from the hotel, you do it during the daylight. Roads can be dangerous - rough with blind sharp curves. Room was dark and the bed was hard but the scenery is amazing. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Power flickered a couple of evenings and even went out for about 30 min- but not sure if it was only the property or more widespread. Close to the volcano and beautiful view of it from our patio.

Rooms are nice and rustic as a lodge should be. The food was good. We were lucky as the view to the Arenal volcano was good. Service was good. Definitely worth it. I did not try the pool but others said it was good and not to cold. The environment at the lodge was spectacular

Less than 24 hours after booking our reservation, we called the hotel to solicit cancelation. They reimbursed one person from our party 100%, but only agreed to reimburse the other person 50%. Our booking and cancelation attempts were only minutes apart. Yet they want to charge over $500 for a stay that is not going to be used. During phone conversations with them, the hotel staff repeatedly changed their "facts," overtly contradicting themselves and persisting in dishonesty. The tipping point was when the owner, Teresa, began screaming and insulting us while she refused to reimburse the remaining 50%. After being treated like that, we don't feel comfortable conceding and staying there. Essentially, they are going to get away with over $500 after only offering the service of treating potential clients very poorly.
