AOL is THE place for views of the volcano AND of Arenal Lake. The grounds are quite extensive and very well-maintained. They offer a great bargain of guided horseback riding (small horses in great shape) for only $10/hr! Bkfst buffet is great, dinner menu expensive (should have only ordered from the 'pastas'). Lunch we managed once in La Fortuna (ask... More

Just came back from a week trip to Costa Rica. Stayed for 4 nights at this place. the lodge is very serene and peaceful. Probably offers the best views of the Volcano and the lake. We stayed in the "Smithsonian" room and waking up every morning to the view of the Volcano was nice. The lodge has lots of trails... More

Wow what a view, the volcano is right there, you can see it and hear it..... After a long drive we arrived at the lodge and checked in, we went to our room and it wasn't the one we had reserved, we had reserved a room where you could see the volcano while laying in bed as advertised on their... If you are going to see the volcano, this is the place to be. The grounds are perfect and beautifully landscaped. With a ton of hikes to take (all with views of the volcano), you won't lack in things to do. The pool is very nice. The staff is great. The food is very good. You can't go wrong here.... More

We did not stay here but we did come to see the volcano. They have the best view from the deck and they place fruit on sticks to draw tons of wild beautiful fun colored birds. I'm not a birder but these are COOL! To use their grounds it costs 4 dollars per person. This includes access to the bar/restaurant.... More

When visiting Arenal, you can't really get any closer to the volcano (which has been dormant since 2010, just an FYI) than this hotel. The views from the deck and restaurant are spectacular. You're right in the park, so they have hiking trails on the grounds and guided tours of those hiking trails. It's a lodge, so the rooms are... More

I was in Arenal, Costa Rica this weekend, and stayed at this hotel. The rooms are very basic, no frills, but clean and everything works. The view is fantastic, you are really close to the volcano, and have a beautiful view of the lake... the restaurant has good service, breakfast is included and its quite good. The best rooms are... We browsed around quite a bit looking for a place to stay near Vulcan Arenal, and we settled on this location based on the amenities available, and the spacious nature of the grounds. My overall reaction to this hotel was that if we had our vacation in Costa Rica to do-over, we could have spent our entire time staying at... More

All I can say is... wow. My husband and I went out to the AOL in August, and stayed for 2 nights. We spent the rest of our time at the beach, which we loved, but we were MISSING the Observatory Lodge. We had a room with a view, and watched the volcano spew lava throughout the night, ate a... More

Situated only 1.7 Miles from the majestic Arenal Volcano and with a spectacular view of Lake Arenal, the Arenal Observatory Lodge (AOL) offers guests the opportunity to DISCOVER, EXPLORE and RELAX. Located within the Arenal Conservation Area and surrounded by rainforests and nature, AOL sits on a 870 acres property, which consists of 400 acres of reforestation, 270 acres of natural forest and 200 acres of cultivated land. The hotel offers 48 comfortable rooms surrounded by gardens, the majority with a direct view of the volcano and/or the forest. The 7 miles of well-maintained trails for walking, horseback riding or biking running through the property provide good opportunities to observe a variety of flora and fauna. Approximately 400 species of birds live in the area making AOL a preferred destination for bird watchers. Activities at the hotel include hikes to the waterfall or to explore Cerro Chato (an extinct volcano with a small lake in the crater), horseback riding, bicycling through the trails, enjoying a refreshing swim in our pool, or simply relaxing with a massage in our SPA. The hotel is well located to serve as a base for a variety of excursions such as: Cano Negro Nature Refuge, hot springs, Venado Caves, Canopy Tours, Arenal Hanging Bridges, Fishing, White Water Rafting, Canyoning, Biking etc. It also serves as a very interesting stop before heading on to Monteverde Cloud Forest or to the beaches of the Pacific coast.
