We stayed here for 4 nights for our visit to La Fortuna and would recommend this hotel. This place has the best hotel view I’ve ever seen. The volcano view from your room’s patio is truly mesmerising (see photo) and the rocking chairs are a lovely touch. The staff were super friendly and the room was very clean and comfortable. The gardens were truly beautiful - the grounds are immaculate and attract so many amazing birds. The pool is nice for a dip after a hot day. It was really nice to have fresh eggs from the chickens for breakfast in the morning, which you can cook in the well-equipped communal kitchen. It’s about a 25 minute walk into La Fortuna centre, which we did a number of times, but you can also catch Ubers easily and there are more local restaurant options available too. We were a bit apprehensive as we didn’t drive in Costa Rica, but the hotel is well served by all major shuttle companies and taxis. It’s not a place if you want breakfast served to you, but there are plenty of options nearby in Sodas, and a communal kitchen where you can cook and have access to the free eggs (get there early as they go quick!). Having some coffee in the rooms rather than the communal kitchen would be nice, but we more than managed! Just another note that you have to pay your hotel fare in cash only.

Very frienly welcome by the manager Elizabetha. Nice cabins set in a well kept garden with flowery bushes. Pleasant to sit on the deck watching hummingbirds and butterflies. Must be wonderful in good weather with the view on the Arenal volcano. We were not so lucky as it rained every day and clouds were hanging low

We stayed here In February. Our brief stay was like being in Shangri-la, a utopian escape from the world. Hopefully visitors will take the time to just sit and watch and listen. Watch the clouds as they change shape over Arenal, notice and listen to the hummingbirds and other beautiful birds. There is also a small “farm” area with chickens, roosters, ducks and a gorgeous flamingo. Eggs are gathered each morning and left in the self-serve kitchen for breakfast. The kitchen is where you can get your morning coffee, make your own breakfast and meet other guests. There is a supermarket and many restaurants within walking distance if you choose not to drive. We were in #12, one of the beautiful newer casitas. When you arrive the friendly, welcoming staff - either Elizabeth or Eugenia - will greet you, show you where to park and take you on a tour. The property is secured with an electronic gate. There are walking trails on the grounds and clean walkways that lead to all the common areas. Children will love being able to be so close to farm animals. The property encompasses everything I love about Costa Rica…NATURE.

A small, beautiful place to stay. Independent rooms set in stunning gardens, each with a comfortable patio (including chairs and a hammock). We had a great view of the volcano. The staff were wonderful, friendly and helpful. The pool was lovely and hot tub an added bonus. A kitchen and dining area was available to make your own breakfast, with free coffee and daily fresh eggs from the hotel’s chickens. Lots of great places to eat within walking distance too.

We were pleasantly surprised by the great value of this little gem of a property. Our room was basic but super clean. A bigger-than mini fridge and freezer was in the room. The air con kept the room cool, however it was pretty noisy. The bed was great, plenty of storage space for clothing and luggage. All rooms have a front porch with rockers and a private patio table and chairs with an umbrella. There wasn’t a bug to be seen, even sitting out at night. There is a cute pool with plenty of loungers and sun umbrellas. They had some pool toys for kids and pool float. No breakfast is offered however with the personal fridge, communal kitchen and the available fresh eggs from their chickens, you could make your own meals. We chose to walk across the street for 3 minutes to Red Frog. We were close enough to walk into town and there were sidewalks for the majority of the way. Elizabeth (Eliza-boss!) was so cheerful and helpful. We were sad to say goodbye. The only challenge is you must pay cash, in USD.

My family and I stayed for a wonderful 2 night visit. The grounds are beautiful with gardens, birds, and views of the volcano. The pool is lovely, and there is also a games area with ping pong and billiards. Great location to access surrounding area for activities such as hikes, hot springs, and rappelling. Special shout out to Elizabeth who is so incredibly helpful, funny, and welcoming.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. I only wish I had known that I would've needed to pay in cash. The pool was great and the room was clean. I absolutely loved the view from my porch. I really wish that breakfast had been included.

Elizabeth was gracious and helpful with suggestion and recommendations for restaurants. She also assisted in getting our rear door to reset and close. She keeps the grounds peaceful and well kept. We highly recommend Hotel Roca Negra! Carole and Art S.M.

- clean and quiet room - great view of volcano - really nice garden with animals (mostly birds) - nice host - parking space - breakfast is not offered but there is a community kitchen free to use. We had a rental car which made this hotel a great start for any excursions like trails, free hot spring or ziplining. I'd return.

The room had ants everywhere. The bathroom needed a refurb and wasn’t specially clean. The shower drain was pretty awful and the walls had staines. There was no breakfast offered in the property, they leave the kitchen available with just eggs for you to cook yourself. Although you’d need to buy bread, fruit, butter… and they don’t accept credit cards, so we had to drive around town looking for an ATM machine. We would definitely not to stay here again and wouldn’t recommend it. I can’t understand how this establishment is rated above 9 in several sites.
