The week before Christmas in 2024 at the W Reserva Conchal was just perfect for 20 somethings children and parents. Although we visited at peak travel season this 5 year old luxurious resort was peacefully absent crowding—a true luxury. Rooms are beautifully finished with an awesomely sized bath, staff in restaurants and on the beach accommodating, young, and friendly. I’m a Marriott platinum so the wonderful morning brunch for all in my party was free…I would have paid anyhow..fresh squeezed health juices, omelette bar, cheese meat and fruit spread. Awesome. The two pools work well with the one closest to the beach offering free cabanas. Beachside drink and umbrella service was low key and friendly and the beach also felt uncrowded with good swimming. Don’t miss the spa and gym which is a hidden benefit on the way to the beach including hot and cold plunge pools at no charge. Make sure you bring plenty of bug spray, unfortunately there are a lot of mosquitoes even when the weather is sunny!resort makes a very good base camp for trips to the four Tigers cloud rainforest or the estuary river tour. Trip from the airport is a little over an hour to the hotel we used the. Hotel affiliated GO van service to and from the Hotel to the airport which was high quality. Tamarindo is fun at night including some excellent small dance bars for the kids. It’s a 30 minute drive. We did not miss renting a car this trip We had a special dinner at the hotel restaurant Latatud which was very well done. A perfect stay.

The W Hotel in Costa Rica is a stunning beachfront resort, offering a picturesque setting for a luxurious stay. Although the beach is public, it still feels exclusive, thanks to the thoughtfully arranged chairs, towels, and attentive beachside service provided by the hotel.

The rooms are exceptional. As a Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite member, we were upgraded two categories higher to a room with a fabulous ocean view, which greatly enhanced our experience.

However, the dining experience was underwhelming. While I’m willing to pay premium prices for exceptional food, the quality at the W fell short. For example, a glass of wine costs $18, a breakfast yogurt parfait with a few berries is $20, and an undercooked corn appetizer with minimal seasoning is priced at $25. The food lacks creativity, seasoning, and value, which is disappointing given the high price point and the hotel’s luxury branding.

I recommend renting a car to explore nearby local restaurants, such as Papaya, Coco Loco, and Masala, which offer far better culinary experiences. Keep in mind that the hotel charges $50 for a one-way car service, so having your own transportation is more economical and allows for greater flexibility.

Lastly, I do not believe the all-inclusive package is worth the $250 per person, per day. It restricts you to the resort in an effort to maximize value, which detracts from the opportunity to explore Costa Rica’s vibrant culture, cuisine, and natural beauty.

While the resort excels in location, ambiance, and accommodations, its dining offerings and pricing leave much to be desired.

This resort is beautiful and the staff is great. The staff consistently introduces themselves and is very friendly and interested. We were particularly impressed with Eric at the front desk, Tatiana (our favorite mixologist) at the living room bar, Kevin at the Zona Azul bar/restaurant and especially Morgan who seems to be everywhere all the time. Morgan leads the exercise, yoga, biking, hiking and any other activity you can think of. He is fun, energetic, friendly, knowledgeable and goes out of his way to make sure you are having fun!
This facility is gorgeous and our room (Tower 1, 5th floor) was amazing. The view of the ocean and surrounding coastline from our bed and balcony was to die for. The breakfast buffet was great (but very expensive if not included in your package). The pools and beach are very nice but umbrellas weren’t available when we were there due windy conditions. The gym at the W is comprehensive, large and well maintained.
We biked (included) and hiked a bunch of the trails on the vast property and made it to some incredible vistas. We also walked around the neighboring Westin and were glad we were at the W. If you want to play pickleball, golf or tennis, you can use the facilities at the Westin.
We enjoyed our beach walks to Brasilito (about 1.3 miles) and it’s easy to do some off property good dining there.
Marriott has their act together in a big way at this property and we loved our time there.

This is a genuinely top end resort, there is no denying that! Stunning location, well maintained, fantastic rooms, great food, beautiful beach and good service. Everything oozes quality and it is probably one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at.

So why only the 3* review? Well, my honest opinion is that it is just way over priced for what it is. Our group secured a deal that saved a few $$'s, but to extend our stay was going to be around $1000 per room, per night.
If you didn't go all inclusive, all food and drinks were also top end priced. Breakfast for example being $45. Despite being all inclusive, we still had to sign all the checks, so could see how much we were getting through during the day.
The other challenge is that there are no other nearby restaurants that you could just walk to, as cheaper places to eat and drink. Just to get to the gate of the resort was a 15 - 20 minute drive, so getting to the nearest town was even further.

My advice would be to go all inclusive, but I would definitely choose to stay at the resort for only part of my vacation. The rest of the time I would stay somewhere a bit more authentic, therefore appreciating the stunning country that Costa Rica is!

NB - it is around a 1.5 - 2 hour drive from Liberia airport.

Three couples booked the all inclusive package through Costco. This is a beautiful resort, clean, wonderful friendly staff. We had an ocean view room in Tower 1. The room was spacious, comfortable bed, cool open shower with double rainfall heads, lovely amenities and clothes steamer. Really enjoyed the adults only pool, though the family pool was not very crowded. Resort was full but did not seem crowded at all. The only restaurant where reservations were needed (for 6) was latitude 10. Thai based menu, we had very nice service and enjoyed the chef seven course tasting menu. In our opinion the food we enjoyed most was the Sushi, ceviche at the restaurant near the beach. breakfast buffet daily was very good, but no toaster for breads, bagels, ha ha, which we missed. One night we did the Guanacaste tasting menu which was good, very interesting. Our waiter brought it family style to our table with a bit of everything on the menu. Highly suggest spending a bit extra for all inclusive, otherwise the food and drink prices are very expensive. Be aware there are some top shelf liquors NOT included in the package deal, but there is plenty to choose from. My friends and I had massages in the spa which were awesome. Spa also has sauna and hot and cold plunge pools and steam room. The fitness center is very adequate, While the ladies were in the spa, the men played golf on their beautiful course. Golf carts are always available for rides to beach or rooms, though everything is very walkable as well. Service is slow in the restaurants, but on the other hand no one rushes you out and you can enjoy leisurely lunches and dinners. Monkeys, iguanas, Coates, and other wildlife on property with beautiful foliage along the paths. Highly recommend this resort especially for couples. families with children would probably enjoy the neighboring Westin property.

My family stayed at the W in Reserva Conchal for a long weekend over Easter. We found the services to be excellent, the people very friendly and the property was (including rooms) extremely clean and well maintained. We had most of our dinners in the local area outside of Reserva Conchal, but the food we ate at the W (breakfast each morning near the lobby overlooking the pool and lunch down by the beach pool area) was very good. Everyone from the bell stand to front desk, waiters in the restaurants and at the pool, as well as room service were great and attentive. It was Easter (a very busy time at the beaches in Guanacaste), so the beach was a bit busier than normal, but the pool areas at the W did not feel overcrowded. The pool staff did a very good job clearing unused seating by the pool to make sure there were always chairs available. We were only there a few days so did not take advantage of many great tours available nearby, but we did arrange our airport transportation through Erik G (he has the Google blue shirt on and is in many of the local Facebook groups about the resort and area). His responsiveness was fast, pricing good, drivers very professional, timely and nice. He also coordinates many local tours which we will certainly do through him when we return to the W. Definitely recommend. Great trip!

We booked a five-night stay at the W Costa Rica - Reserva Conchal, but left after just one night.
As a long-time American Express Platinum cardholder, I’ve stayed at many luxury hotels through their Fine Hotels Program and generally had excellent experiences. Just before the W, we had enjoyed a fantastic three-day stay at Nayara Gardens in La Fortuna, which was one of the best resort experiences I've ever had. Unfortunately, our stay at the W was the exact opposite in every way.
Although I booked through the Amex platform, it turns out this was not part of the Fine Hotels Program, despite being listed as a five-star property. It fell short of that rating in virtually every way.
Here’s a rundown of our experience:
The W Reserva Conchal is situated in a large development. After passing through security, it’s a 10-minute drive to the hotel, making it quite isolated. Once you're there, you're pretty much stuck unless you drive elsewhere.
Upon checking in, we asked about the amenities associated with the Amex Fine Hotels Program. The receptionist promised to consult his manager and call us in the room, but we never received a follow-up. Our room, on the second floor despite the hotel being only about 20% full, was small and uninviting. The electronic key printer was malfunctioning, so we had to wait in our room for the keys.
We were informed of the dining options on the property. We chose the main restaurant for a light bite in the afternoon. After being seated, we waited ten minutes without service despite the restaurant being nearly empty. When our order arrived, the bruschetta was poor and over cooked spring rolls were inedible. The bill was $42.
Later, we drove to Tamarindo and returned to find heavy rain. We opted for room service but were put on hold for four minutes before we could place our order. An hour later, our food arrived on a wooden tray with no utensils, napkins, or condiments. With no space to set up the tray, we had to eat on the bed, and the food was unappetizing. We ended up leaving the tray outside our door.
Breakfast the next morning was similarly disappointing. The buffet was ridiculously overpriced and was nothing like I had ever experienced in a 5 star hotel. Service was slow, and the waitress spilled coffee without offering to clean it up or leave the pot on the table. I eventually had to refill my coffee myself. The staff appeared poorly trained throughout our stay.
We checked out just an hour after breakfast and headed to Tamarindo, where we found the Capitan Suizo Beachfront Resort—a true gem where we enjoyed the remainder of our vacation in complete comfort.
I wish I had thoroughly reviewed the W Reserva Conchal before booking. Despite its five-star rating, it barely deserves two stars in my opinion.

I had a wonderful experience at the W Reserve with my husband for a 3 day trip in February. We had an ocean view suite with a plunge pool and it is one of the nicest rooms I have ever stayed in.

The hotel facilities were excellent. The gym is spacious and very functional.

We loved the beach club. The friendly staff set up chairs and umbrellas for us (wind permitting) everyday. We were able to get drinks brought to our beach chairs and they were delightful.

The beach itself was wonderful. Blue water, nice waves, warm. It was one of my favorite beaches to play in.

The staff were all so warm and friendly. Everyone asked our name and introduced themselves to us. Although we were only there three days, people remembered us, said hello and remembered the drinks we liked.

Breakfasts were excellent. We loved the buffet and the setting was stunning.

We also loved the lunch food and cocktails at the Wet bar. It was really nice to have an adults only pool.

A highlight was having room service dinner for our last night. The food was brought quickly and on temperature.

The food and drinks are on the pricey side and we did the upgrade to an all inclusive package ($175/person/day) and it was so worth it.

The only downside was we did not love the dinner food at Cucina Mercado and Lat 10. Everything was fine. Service was also overly slow (although warm) at those restaurants.

Because we had the package, we did not mind this as much.

My family spent four nights at the W Hotel early in October 2024. We had two rooms: one simple room with two beds and one suite. The view was phenomenal and so was the service.
The choices of furniture seemed quickly cobbled together. There were nonsensical drawers, a foosball table that was supposed to double as a dining table but couldn't be used because of the handles jutting out, a random surfboard shelf, and barely any clothing storage in the two-bed room. Also in the two-bed room, the shower had two shower heads--one that was broken--, had no door to keep the water from spraying into the rest of the bathroom, and only had a thin shade between the balcony and the shower through which we could still see clearly. There was a sign that there would be a fee of $40 USD for every missing toiletry, which I found excessive, especially when the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash seemed to be new, which would mean it would be thrown away at the end of our stay.
My experience was much improved by the wonderful staff. MarĂa JesĂşs C. in housekeeping and Marley in the omelet station at breakfast were amazing. AarĂłn and Ricardo also welcomed us with enthusiasm and patience. I was never intimidated to ask questions in either Spanish or English.
Tips can be in either United States dollars or Costa Rican colones. Many of the other families there were from the USA, which is familiar but not the best for experiencing the culture of Costa Rica.
The food and drinks were very enjoyable. Breakfast had an array of options to cater to many people. I was able to have local watermelon and pineapple at breakfast and local seafood at dinner. Those of us who drink found ourselves at the bar every day at happy hour.
This is a good hotel to go to for ocean, mountains, trees, and animals. Amongst the many animals, we enjoyed seeing leaf-cutter ants, howler monkeys, frogs, magpie-jays, and hermit crabs. The sand was soft, the ocean refreshing, and the balcony relaxing to take in the sights and sounds. This was rainy season, so we got to experience a thunderstorm with a good view of the lightning across the mountains.
Also, check out the restaurant Patagonia del Mar nearby! I wish we had gone twice during our short stay.

Wonderful hotel perched next to the Pacific Ocean. This hotel sits deep inside a nature reserve however has all the mod cons of a smart upscale 5 star resort. Its main reception building is compact with a bar and 2 restaurants connected to the adult pool. The family pool is located next to three beach which is a 10min walk down hill from the main reception or a golf cart ride away where there is also another restaurant and bar alongside the recreation centre.

The hotel is smartly decorated with a hip vibe with well appointed rooms in seperate 3 / 4 storey blocks.

The gym is of a good size with a limited set of equipment types overlooking the trees outside.

The hotel never felt over occupied and there always seemed to be plenty of sun beds.

The staff really make a difference here and throughout we felt like the staff really enjoyed working for this brand and were proud Costa Ricans who genuinely cared if you were happy at the hotel.

The breakfast was exceptional with amazing fruit and cooked options. Lunch by the pool was also excellent. We felt the dinner options were not as good as breakfast or lunch and ate out on our last night at a local restaurant with excellent food.

We went on an interesting hike through the reserve and also saw howling monkeys at the car park as well as humming birds outside our rooms! So much wildlife and amazing views with an exceptional beach. There were some fish but nothing that would be regarded as excellent snorkelling options.

One negative is that the hotel prices are high but what you would expect for a 5 star resort, however getting to the nearest town needs an Uber or car journey.

All in all it was an excellent hotel with the staff making it an amazing place to stay

In the suites, it's a wall with a bedroom door that locks. You can see photos and video footage comparing all the rooms if you go to YouTube and search "Finding Mangos Ultimate Guide to the W Costa Rica." There is a 20-minute video that goes into great detail about the hotel and its various rooms.
