Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
I would recommend this place, it is conveniently located near by the bank, supermarket, and within walking distance to the beach and a few other "sodas" (Bars). Freddy and his nephew went out of their way to give us assistance with the sim card and other things we had questions about. The pool is GREAT, the rooms are comfy, the outdoor veranda/patio is a great spot for sitting and relaxing. Call ahead to make your reservation or search online for a coupon code.

Frederick was a great host. We loved the apartment, would definitely go back and recommend. Loved all the mature foliage, grocery store was a two minute walk. Close to everything yet quite. Kitchen had everything we needed for our stay.

There are some very nice apartments at the Masai, but the ”classic studio” is not one of them. It is a triangular shaped room that is best avoided. Very small. No closet or even wall hooks. No chair or desk Very little room for luggage. The ceiling is so low that you can reach up and touch it. Painted cinder block walls and a concrete floor. The bathroom sink has only a cold water faucet. The shower has an electrically heated shower head, sometimes known as a "suicide shower."
The room backs onto the site’s gravel parking lot, so you hear cars and people coming and going late at night or early in the morning. Palm tree leaves blowing in the wind across the metal roof also create a lot of noise.
This is the only room that is not facing the central courtyard/pool area. The "patio" is actually part of the sidewalk between the parking lot and the main buildings.
The room is probably a converted storage area. Despite all of this, the price is not much lower than some of the other rooms.
Other rooms at the Massai are much nicer. The pool is great. The manager is very helpful and is working to upgrade the facility. But there is not much that can be done for the "classic studio" room.

We booked a four night vacation at the hotel based on the internet reviews, but when we arrived it was clear that we had been duped. The price was too good to be true. The hotel was in very poor condition and the rooms were awful. The room was dirty, the air condition was pitiful and we had to deal with bugs running around the rooms and the kitchen. The internet pictures were not at all reflective of the actual conditions, and the reviews had to have been submitted by people connected with the hotel. We paid for the four nights, left and went to another hotel after the first night and were offered no refund. PLEASE DO NOT BOOK YOUR VACATION WITH THIS HOTEL! YOU WILL NE DISAPPOINTED!!!

My boyfriend and I lived in Playa Flamingo from Feb - June 2015 and LOVED our say here. This place is a lush oasis, private and secluded with beautiful apartments, each unique and lovely. The owner, Miguel, and caretaker, David, are stars! They made us feel like part of the family, always helping us out and taking an interest in our work as dive instructors. Our apartment was cleaned at least once a week, always with fresh new sheets and towels. The wifi is great and let us Skype home to our families whenever we wanted. The pool was a godsend on hot hot days and was the main reason we loved coming home from work everyday.
It is located between Playa Flamingo proper and Potrero which is great because Playa Flamingo has the beautiful sunset beach and Potrero has the best bars and restaurants. I would recommend this place over every accommodation in this area if you are looking for privacy, authenticity, friendliness and a pool!
Thanks again Miguel, David and Rose!

My husband and I stayed in the Massia apartments for just over three weeks in February / March 2015. We had a great time. the apartments are simple but comfortable and roomy with lovely balconies. The pool and gardens are lovely. We were made extremely welcome by Miguel who runs it and along with David were treated like members of their family. They showed us around, shared meals with us and even cooked for us.We got a real feel of Costa Rica from them.

I booked this apartment with mixed feelings - I needed cheap accommodation for a few nights to keep down the cost of my holiday, but some of the reviews I had read were not so positive, so I went there hoping for the best! These apartments are slightly hidden away from the main road, so our taxi driver struggled a bit to find it - but after asking some people in the street, he found it (and, to be honest, it is actually well indicated.....). We were welcome by the owner, a very friendly guy who immediately showed us to our apartment, although we arrived before check in time. I had requested an apartment on the first floor, and that was what I was given. The apartment was much larger than I expected, with an open kitchen and a rather large living room, a bedroom and a bathroom. There was a double bed in the bedroom and a single bed in the living room. The bathroom had seen better days and would benefit from a refurbishment, but everything worked fine. the kitchen was surprisingly well stocked with all you need to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner - pots, dishes, huge fridge. We had a balcony around all the apartment, which was very nice! The complex has a swimming pool, which we used on a couple of occasions. The only criticism I can give is that there were only 2 sun loungers.
The owner and his daughter love animals, and that is something which I really liked!!! They have 2 great parrots, a lovely dog they rescued in Mexico, and a cute kitten they had found in the street. Two iguanas lived on the roof our our apartment and came on our balcony every day. Do not be scared... iguanas are harmless animals!!!
Next to the apartments there is a supermarket and a few minutes away a bank. We walked to the beach every day (one day the owner gave us a lift, which was very kind of him!!!!).
Would I stay there again? For sure, it is great value for money and the owner and his daughter are great! If you have a car it is a great base to explore the area around, but if you do not have a car (like us) you can still enjoy your time there.
Sure, if you are expecting a 5 star hotel you will be disappointed, but then you should not book an apartment!

We stayed here in Jan. & Feb, 2010. and were fairly happy with the place. Amazing how things and management change. We stayed here for two months (Jan and Feb 2013) and found the place has gone downhill. The landscaping was almost nonexistant and the only thing we found new were 6 new lightweight patio chairs. The bed we had was very uncomfortable. It was a double bed on a queen mattress box, so a lot of sagging. Our air conditioners broke constantly and eventually we were told we were to blame because of abuse of using them too much so the owners never fixed them. We had to close the two patio doors at night because of the biting bugs in the area, as the screens were either nonexistant or very badly torn by the iguanas. Man did it get hot at night. Thermometer said it was 35C (95F) most nights. The bathroom really stank. We were given a almost empty spray can of air deordorizer. The only hot water was in the the shower head, which had very scary electrical connections. Our apartment had electical problems in the eating area and outside lights. They only worked 2 nights while we were there and were never fixed. (a short....fire hazard??) E-mailed the owners about it and nothing was done. The pool was vaccuumed only 3 times while we were there for the 2 months. The bottom was full of dead crunchy bugs and slimy leaves. Most time the customers had to skim and take what care we could do. The hot tub was usually empty because the staff was too lazy to keep it clean. The managers were the laziest employees we have ever seen. We saw people wait 3 hours just to sign in and get a room. Most arrived at 12:30 PM and eventually the manager would show up at 3:30 to 4:00 PM. The only thing we will miss is Cayoe the Maccaw and the tile mosaic by the laundry room. It is too bad the owners have let this place fall to what it is, there is a lot of potential for it to be a real nice place but in my opinion the owners are either broke or just don't care.

I love the Macaws and even though they are pets. The door were open and they were free to go if they chose. They flew around the property and you could tell they were a loving pair and beautiful. The hosts Miguel and Susan were great. Miguel even made us Spanish tortillla I think they called. it. (Susan I am still waiting for the recipe) Our apartment was very nice. My only complaint would be that there should be air conditioning in the bedroom. The cool air from the a/c in the other room doesn't make its way to the bedroom. The pool was very refreshing.
