For the price, this was a great value in Flamingo. Just a short walk from the beach, we had a small but clean room at the Mariner Inn. There was a small bar and restaurant which had lovely views of the Marina and games such as checkers and chess which you could borrow and play under the gazebo. We paid only $34 a night and really enjoyed ourselves. If all you need is a clean room with your own bathroom, A/C and a small TV you will enjoy it here and have more money to spend on activities and food. It's not for everyone but we highly recommend it for those on a budget that plan on spending their time exploring the area and the beach.

My wife and I left the US with no particular landing place in mind in Costa Rica other than the airport in Liberia. A local friend called Larry who is the owner of the Mariner Inn, and got us a very difficult room to get in the high season. It turned out to be the best decision we made in the three years we spent in this area. This place is the focal point of all the interesting activities that go on in the Playa Flamingo area. Larry who has been around a number of years gets the best entertainment around and it is FREE. Its funky bar has a personality that should not be missed. My wife and I came back from the beach one day for lunch and found 6 young ladies dancing on the bar for an hour. They were celebrating St Patrick’s Day and had a little too much to drink but were having a great time. Don't miss this place.

When we started our trip to Costa Rica from San Jose, we were not sure what are we paying for.
Finally we made our way to Flamingo beach, because we were told it has the best beach in Costa Rica, after we entered this small exclusive town, the first place we saw was Mariner Inn and decided to stay there. Place is located in a secured area everything is very close. The next day we decided to see places like Brasilita (not very safe) and Potrero beach (no paved roads), thinking that it might be better (we were looking for a calm beach), we also looked allllllll over the Flamingo area and did not find a better place than Mariner Inn (avoid El Sabanerro unless you want to sleep with crabs and spiders in your room). It is family run business with Larry and Lin running it. With spectacular views from the rooftop restaurant. I think it is way undervalued, but the owner is running this place from 1990s and after staying there for 5 nights we realized that everyone who comes here are regulars who have been coming here for 8-9 years in a row.
Location is perfect for shops access to different beaches.
It is THE BEST KEPT SECRET in Costa Rica, and most locals/expats know the place. I usually don't write reviews of the hotels unless its a disaster, but I was so impressed by this place that I decided this is the least I can do.
Larry invites different live bands that perform on weekends, and by the way, we decided to extend our stay for another 2 weeks in Costa Rica just because of this place.

So you are going to the beach, exactly what do you need to be comfortable and close to the sand? We think Mariner Inn suits the bill just fine. Rooms are really from $29 plus tax and up. All rooms have hot water, AC, TV, FREE Internet, and they are clean. (Trust me on the clean part, my wife is real picky!) We stayed in a single queen room ($39 with taxes), the mattress was firm and comfortable just the way l like it. The AC worked great, the mini-frig worked properly and the hot water was HOT! The hotel buys a satellite cable package that allowed us to catch the Sunday night football games as well. Now for the beach part, you can walk. You are 2 blocks away directly down the street to a truly white sand beach with no hills to climb. The high end hotel and spa directly on the corner which you will pass as your feet hit the sand, is about $200 a night, important I guess if you really need a movie theater and spa. We were going to the beach!. Mariner Inn also has a swimming pool and patio located off the restaurant/bar with a beautiful view of the bay and all the boats that moor there. Say hello to Lin, she runs the place and is everything but the chef. (See our restaurant review). Service was above par and the overall feel of the hotel, restaurant, patio and grounds is very comfortable. They only have 10 rooms. Parking is available right next to the pool.

I stayed here in March with my brother on his first trip to CR. We had a great trip and were happy with our choice of hotels. We are not budget-minded people, but we also don't care for resort type accomodations either. The Mariner is more of a Bar/Restaurant with a handful of rooms attached. It was clean and reasonably comfortable. The people were all very nice. I think the beauty of the place for us though was that it was a great location for many of the area's activities. You can go to Potrero or places further North, Flamingo beach is walking distance away (and very beautiful), or you can head South to Brasilito or Conchal and do some snorkling or horseback riding on the beach. We opted for the dune buggies in Potrero, as well as some fishing. The restaurant is on the second floor with a clean pool and patio. You get a nice breeze blowing through in the evening as well. The food is nothing special but certainly as good as most places around. The milkshakes they make are the best I can remember having in a long time! So for economically priced rooms and close proximity to a lot of other bars and restaurants and beaches, the Mariner was certainly a nice place to stay. I would go back again.

Not a better deal in the Flamingo beach area. We found the rooms to be very clean and the staff was very respectful and attentive. The food at the resturant was outstanding!!
It was nice to be able unwind after a day at the beach or sight seeing at the open air bar.
We enjoyed meeting the Tico's and enjoyed our stay at the inn. We will be making the Mariner Inn a regular placed to stay as we look to build in Costa Rica.

This isa relaxing hotel with very good atmosphere. The bar, which is something inbetween inside and outside, has some wonderful chairs and a veranda with a little pool. This is a perfect place to bring a good book. Its about 5 minutes walk from the hotel to the beach. When you stay at this hotel, you will always want to stay "just a couple of days more"

Anytime I see "luxury" in an advertisement for an accommodation I look further, seeking authentic satisfaction. This small inn, with about a dozen rooms, bar and restaurant has American-influenced authentic in spades. I stayed a month.

This little hotel is located in Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica. It is a short walk to the white sand beach... one of the nicest beaches in Costa Rica. The rooms are very inexpensive from $29 a night. The owner is Larry from PA and his wife Lynn from the Philippines. The restaurant/bar has great food and is a hub of activity. There is a small pool outside of the bar. This isn't a luxury hotel but it is a great value and lots of fun. Great for travelers on a budget. The owners host parties for holidays. Don't be surprised if the owners stop by your table with a free shot or a beer. During the world cup the owner bought a round for the house every time Costa Rica scored! http://www.marinerinn.com/

We chose the Mariner Inn to finish up our Costa Rica trip with a couple of days at the beach. We booked into the suite on a Thursday and were quite pleased with the size of the accommodation for me, my husband and my 17 year old son. The suite has two bedrooms with a good-sized bathroom and a kitchenette with a fridge, microwave, coffee maker (without a carafe, cups or coffee) and a sink. The little private patio has a table with chairs and a hammock for lazing.
The restaurant is friendly, clean and good.
Our only complaint was the lack of sleep. There are two dance/music clubs nearby and the music rang out until sometime around 1:00 in the morning. The music from one club shut down at 12:00 but the other kept on going. Sometime during the wee hours the local fauna took up the baton and kept on singing. We had just spend three days farther north at a lodge in the forest so we thought we'd got the best of the jungle noise (there was plenty there) but these birds and reptiles were LOUD. I think there must be a nest very close to our balcony because all three of us were astounded by the level of noise. As soon as the sun started to come up, the birds quieted down and the traffic started. The traffic was far quieter, though, so we managed to get a few hours of sleep in the morning. I had got up during the night and dug a pair of ear plugs out of my luggage but they were no match for the birds.
I'm not sure if it's just the location of the suite, being at the end of the hotel closest to the clubs and the trees but I'm surprised that no one else who's written reviews had any noise issues. We were booked in for two nights but, since we were heading home after the second night, we simply left early and got a hotel closer to the airport where we could get a full night's sleep.
