Detailed Reviews
Lovely place where we got a warm welcome, they rent surf boards and the breakfast is healthy and delicious!! We appreciated the proximity with the beach and also did some visits to tamarindo 25min and playa flamingo (20min).
The area is nice, rooms are small but clean and ok for a couple.
There’s a yoga spot inside the hotel with some hamacs here and there to chill…
Nice place that we highly recommend for its calm, placement, cleanliness and the nice people working here.
Thank you 🙏

Perhaps a little unusual, but we never got the chance to stay here, as they were fully booked during our stay in Playa Grande. But after hanging out there a lot and having numerous chats with many of the guests and a great room tour with Gail, we are sorry we were stuck at the dump next door. What we did do was spend a lot of our food dollars at the Mar Bar which is attached to the hotel...Lindsay, the manager, runs a great little bar/ restaurant and her staff are people she should be proud of. They have all been there long term, are so polite and funny to boot. Her management style shows through in her happy staff. The Panko Chicken has to be the best value in all of Playa Grande...it will even stuff you full after the longest of surfs. Compare this to the $7 I spent for four chicken wings at Playa Grande Inn and it's a no brainer. Our only hope is that next trip to Playa that La Marejada has the rooms we need for the time we have!

We stayed at this hotel for two nights last month. Room very comfortable and clean. Gail and Marco are very nice. The food at the restaurant is good. It is a one minute walk to the beach. Wifi works well. We werent sure how many nights we were staying, and would have thought Gail would have asked us if we were staying before accepting another reservation (which actually canceled), so we moved next door.

We made a good choice staying here. We felt welcome and the small hotel was nicely kept. The reviews below mine are spot on.

The 8 rooms are clean but very basic. The location near the beach is good. The manager is friendly. The price is reasonable. Breakfast in the restaurant was good. A good choice for surfers. Playa Grande is experiencing a drought so water may be rationed.

Stayed three nights as a solo traveler in Costa Rica for a photography book project. 20+ previous extended trips to Costa Rica but my first time at Playa Grande.
Pros – small size (~8 rooms?) makes for familiarity and intimacy. All the staff quickly greet you by name with a genuine interest and hospitality. Co-owners Gail and Carlo are personally involved in every aspect of the day to day and that shows in the operation. Gail returned my emails for information and reservations promptly and answered all my questions the first time I asked (not always the case when dealing with hotels in CR).
Easy 80 min drive from downtown Liberia (65 min from the airport) on well-paved but up/down, twisty turny country rooms once you get off Nicoya’s main highway at Belen. Relax and enjoy it.]
Both mattresses in my room (#7; second floor) were exceptional – maybe the finest in 20+ trips to CR? Large airy shower with pebbled floor. Big fluffy towels. AC worked so well that I rarely used it because the room stayed cool. Comfortable wooden chairs and side table outside in the open air hallway overlooked the pool. The cool deep pool was nice after the warm ocean water.
The food is excellent, with large portions of very fresh ingredients. The wraps in particular are full meals. Carlo makes the pasta by hand and all the pasta dishes are excellent. Sunday night when I was there was Sushi Night only with a very comprehensive selection of tasty items including some vegetarian offerings. Prices are not cheap but not as high as Rip Jack next door (had a dinner and breakfast there when relatives came to visit). Prices are reasonable (particularly considering the distance many items must travel from Liberia) and all the meals served with love.
The bartenders enjoy making their concoctions (a full range of services) and serving them to you with a smile.
The hotel is about 3 minutes from spectacular Playa Grande where the beach is 200+ meters wide at low tide and great for swimming, walking, and shell collecting.
There’s a rocky headland at the north end of PG where you can cross over to equally beautiful and undeveloped Playa Ventanas. I got rained out the day I planned to walk the trail over another rocky hill between Ventanas and black sand beach to the north of it. Other visitors I met raved about it.
Stroll south 45 min or so to the Tamarindo estuary. I saw others flagging down a boatsman who ferried them across the estuary mouth at low tide to Playa Tamarindo.
This is one of CR’s most famous surfing beaches so you can sit on the beach from before sunrise to after sunset watching them. Swimming is easiest (safest and less a struggle) when the tide is low because the 10’ vertical difference in high/low tide creates a powerful rip current at high tide. Be sure to go out around 5am on a low tide for swimming on an almost empty beach - a truly spiritual experience for me. Sunsets are beautiful but be sure to stay on the beach afterwards to see the sky light up with color.
Cons (very minor) – no complementary breakfast or even complementary coffee. Having pot of coffee on the bar would be a welcome touch during the day.
La Marejada will unquestionably be my choice of lodging for all future trips to Playa Grande.

We enjoyed our last meal in Playa Grande at La Marejada (Swell). The Antipasto Italienne was nice but not worth $20, the pasta was good but under cooked, the hit of the meal was the fried snapper which was delicious! Our waiter was excellent but the owner (man with long hair and European looking who we assumed is the owner) was rude to staff and indignant to customers. Overall we enjoyed our meal but there are better options in Playa Grande. Hopefully the tide Swell will recede and update their pricing and improve their customer service.

My friends and I had a great stay at La Marejada. Gail and Marco were so wonderful and accommodating. Communication via phone and email were fast and easy and the whole process from reservation to checkout was smooth. Gail helped us out also when our plans changed and we needed to stay a second night later on our trip on a short basis. Food at restaurant is also really good - try to egg sandwich. Playa Grande is a beautiful town and La Marejada was the perfect place to stay there!

We stayed at La Marejada just one night as they were booked the rest of our time there. I am glad we did. It is a small piece of property but has all the essentials. The beds were comfortable, shower nice - although it was a hand-held shower unit so not as easy as a standard shower. The pool outside was refreshing after our time at the beach. And there were ample outdoor showers and hoses to rinse off all of our beach stuff at the end of the day. There are also lines to hang wet bathing suits, etc. My favorite part of this hotel is the restaurant. The food was delicious and affordable. La Marejada is right next door to Rip Jack and enjoys easy beach access through a 3 minute trail. It is also only about a 5 minute walk to the Frijole Surf Shop for surf and boogie board rentals. All in all I recommend this place without reservation.

I love this little inn/hotel. Great people that run it, plenty of places to eat nearby, and surf steps out from the front door. Rooms are clean, nicely built, quiet and everything works in them unlike a few other spots around the area. Highly recommend!
