Very nice little hotel within a few hundred meters of the beach. It has a little pool for cooling off or sitting around with drinks. The rooms are of decent but not large size. This is a 5 to 7 min walk to 3 -4 nice restaurants on the beach. The proprietors are very nice and the breakfast was included and acceptable tico.

Hotel Mangaby exceeded our expectations. Located just 200 meters from the stunning Playa Hermosa beach, the convenience was unbeatable. The restaurant offered delicious local cuisine, and the swimming pool was the perfect retreat after a day in the sun, highly recommended

I couldn't have asked for a better getaway. Hotel Mangaby's serene atmosphere, coupled with the proximity to the beach, made it an ideal choice. The swimming pool and the delicious offerings at the on-site restaurant added an extra layer of comfort.

The Mangaby is NOT a do over! If you stay in our room, you're welcome because I cleaned it with Lysol and Clorox Wipes. The cleaning crew only cleand where they presume the guest will look. I wiped off the dirt from the bedroom and bathroom cobwebs from walls, dead bugs from windowsills, etc. The phone is nice and clean, although it doesn't work. The bedroom & bed had red ants, and I am highly allergic to bug bites. The decor is dated. The rooms are spacious but the beds are small. I also cleaned the bathrooms. Thankfully, I packed my water shoes, so I used them in the shower. We love Playa Hermosa, but this place is a huge disappointment that has me looking forward to being home.

We loved this little hotel! We booked this last minute after we decided Samara was not for us and headed back to Playa Hermosa. We are so glad we did! The pool is a beautiful little oasis. We enjoyed the small, friendly atmosphere. We met lots of other guests at the pool and at breakfast which was fun. The owner was very friendly and obviously works very hard to keep the hotel looking good. He also helped us arrange taxis and excursions. AC worked great and mini fridge was nice. Breakfast was good with great coffee. The hotel is in a great location, 2 blocks from the beach. There is a small grocery store across the street. Our favorite restaurant was also across the street, Almar. Great options for lunch and dinner for less than $10. The only downside to the hotel for us was that the beds were too firm. We loved this hotel and will be back!

This is probably one of the most enjoyable stays at a hotel that I have had in a long time. Nelsy and Alberto are fantastic hosts. They went way above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. We had a small problem with some documents that were accidently left in the room, they came to the rescue and got them to us. I had a breakfast request and they were willing to accommodate me. To sum up, they treated us like family. The hotel is also great, lots of hot water and pressure, internet is the fastest of any hotel I have ever stayed at. AC worked great, TV worked, as well as all the controllers. Lots of plugins, a fridge in the room. The hotel is also designed for folks that use wheelchairs, including the rooms downstairs, restaurant, and pool. I really can't say enough good about this hotel.

We stayed here for one night at the beginning of our Costa Rica trip. It was a lovely and relaxing way to start off after long travel days. We rented a car from Liberia airport and enjoyed the short drive to arrive at this hotel. It is easy to find if using Waze; the hotel has it’s own parking lot. This is a small hotel which fits the quiet neighborhood perfectly complete with a refreshing pool with a waterfall and a shallow area for kids. It is a very short walk to Playa Hermosa which is absolutely beautiful! Great for swimming with clear water and soft sand - great for building castles or going for Long Beach walks/runs. There are also a bunch of restaurants along the beach - we ate at one for dinner at sunset which was gorgeous. We also really enjoyed our balcony in the evening which overlooked the pool.

The hotel includes a limited breakfast buffet (eggs, toast with jam, meat, plantain, rice & beans, fresh fruit) and coffee/juice, available at the restaurant outside by the pool. The hotel is clean and quiet, however, the rooms are quite outdated. Also, we noticed that our patio doors to the balcony did not actually lock. There is a mini-fridge and a safe in the room which was appreciated. There are also nearby stores to buy groceries, drinks, etc.

One tip: bring beach towels as there are none provided for the pool area or beach.

We stayed for a few nights at the end of our 2 week vacation so we would have a short ride to the airport. Very clean and well maintained. The staff could not be more accommodating, front desk calling cabs, giving us extra pillows etc. The pool with jacuzzi jets was refreshing and clean. A limited breakfast buffet at their restaurant by the pool was an added benefit. Reasonably quite and uncrowded, very secure. Walking distance to many restaurants, a small market and the beach of course. Rooms have AC.The only downside was the furniture in our suite could use an update with something more comfortable.

This was a budget hotel for us. I had a hard time finding a place that had availability, but I'm glad we ended up at Hotel Mangaby! It feels like a hotel from the 60's. The rooms are basic, but spacious and have a nice outside seating area. The air conditioning and wi-fi worked great. The pool area is FANTASTIC! Pretty, relaxing and plenty of seating. The breakfast was simple but really delicious. The location was fantastic! So close to the beach, but also very chill and quiet. Staff were great and they never pushed a trip advisor review at you so all these reviews are from people like me who take the time to give them their kudos.

This hotel is so clean and friendly. The owners ( Alberto) go above and beyond to make sure you have a good stay.

The rooms are simple but very clean. We enjoyed sitting in the balcony listening to the howler monkeys.

The breakfast was great with the best coffee we have ever had!!

Just a short walk to a beautiful peaceful beach.

We only stayed one night because we had reservations at a resort not far from this hotel. We asked Alberto how we could get taxi. He said “I’ll take you”. He put our luggage in the back of this jeep and took us to the resort. So nice. Again they go above and beyond to make a difference.

We would stay here again and again.

How is the beach? Is it rough or calm for swimming and lounging? Thank you.

Westfield, New Jersey2,282 contributions258 helpful votes
The beach is much calmer than Playa Nisora or further south along the coast. They don't even surf on this beach. The water is very mild-not too hot or cold. You can take a boat out at the later part of the day to watch the sunset or to go scuba diving or fishing. It was very calm and we were able to sit on the beach without incident. Very few people, not too crowded (which I LOVED!). There are also hotels along the beach that rent lounge chairs if you prefer that but we just laid on our towels.

Do you recommend setting up an airport shuttle or simply taking a taxi to the hotel?
Answer from LKWendel
Westfield, New Jersey2,282 contributions258 helpful votes
If you plan to just stay in the Playa Hermosa area, then I would contact the hotel for shuttle information-- I know they provide it as someone was taking a taxi as we were checking out. The hotel staff is outstanding and reliable. I would NOT recommend to rent a car unless you want to venture outside the area. It is VERY expensive (with MANDATORY insurance you must take at $25/day in addition to the cost of the car), the roads are horrendous in most areas and the drivers are unpredictable. We rented a car because we were traveling for 13 days throughout the country and it was the most unpleasant part of our trip. Have fun!!
